This item was purchased in May 2015 and installed a few weeks later (we were in the process of building a new coop). Installation was easy and it worked decently well from end of June 2015 to mid Feb 2016. Initially our main problem was that the door would sometimes get unhooked and fall down. The door was not heavy (about 5 pounds) and it glided perfectly in its rails. What I noticed is that the vibrations from opening/closing operations would get the hook (attached to the cable) to slowly slip from the screw attached to the door. That would happen until the door would simply fall down. So I ended up using a bigger screw on the door and that fixed the problem. During that period the door would only need to readjusted for upper/lower opening. It seemed to be drifting up or down a bit over time. I don't quite know why but it was not a big problem. A couple of weeks ago, the motor stopped working. I verified that the door had no obstructions and it did glide well. So I brought the motor back inside my house thinking that it was forever broken. I would have expected the plastic gears to have failed but not the motor itself. I contacted the seller via amazon and I got a reply within a few hours. I was directed to a web site where the information (clearly presented) helped me figure out that the motor was working in only one direction. When I reversed the polarity on the motor, it would turn in the other direction. I figured out that the circuit board/switch included in P/N 65001 was no longer working. The seller contacted the manufacturer since my motor was still under warranty. They shipped me a new circuit board (free of charge) and now it is working again. Note: The electric circuit is protected by a GFCI, the timer itself is working and the power supply is still working. So I have no idea why the board failed in the first place. The entire motor is protected by a roof so there is no water around except for the humidity that we enjoy in the Pacific Northwest. I can attest that the plastic gears inside the unit are in perfect working order. I'm glad that I got a prompt and satisfactory resolution. I will keep my fingers crossed hoping that I get many years of service from this motor.

Ordered the Auto chicken door and it's been installed and running for a few months now without issue. Had some initials issues with it but the seller was prompt and quickly helped me resolve the issues. I highly recommend this for anyone that's ever thought about automating their chicken coop door. I went with a 12V car battery, Harbor Freight 1.5 Watt Solar Battery Charger, and 12V 16A Digital LCD Power Programmable Timer Time Switch Relay to go with the Add-A-Motor D20 Auto Motor Door. No more early morning noisy chickens! It lets the chickens out just a bit before the sunrises and automatically closed a little after the sunsets and safe from predators when me and the family are out for dinner, vacation, movie night, etc. etc. etc!!! I've thought about hooking up Home Automation WiFi plug so I can use both Google Home and Alexa to control my coop door. 12V timer just works and it's easy and doesn't rely on my wifi network. However, it would be pretty cool to control the open/close just in case we were at dinner/vacation/etc and we saw through our Alro cameras that a chicken didn't make it in for some reason. Would allow remote open/close to let them in or out. Best thing I ever bought for my chickens. I've always wanted an auto coop door but thought they were expensive. It's not cheap but this allows me to sleep in a little more and also not have to rush home after dinner to close their door!

1 star removed because I agree the transformer is crap. They have replaced mine twice and it failed again within about 2 weeks. I asked them if they changed suppliers or something and they said they have always used the same supplier and their transformers are "very heavy duty". Well i found a 12V supply laying around that was rated for about 1/4 the recommended power of their "heavy duty" one and its been running perfectly for over a year now. Just find another power supply and you will be fine. a battery/ solar panel system would be great so a power outage would not affect operation. That Said : This is the handiest thing since sliced bread. Chickens are creatures of habit and LOVE getting let in and out the same time every day and I LOVE not worrying if i'm not there to be their doorman, and i can set the timer a little later when its freezing out and i need to go to work super early. I also used a piece of 1/4" Plexiglass for my door inside a frame of old storm window track. We have a short door and couldn't mount the motor above the door - so i ran the string in a U-shape up from the door, thru 2 Eye hooks and back down to the motor positioned upside-down and parallel to my door. ( I tried 2 pulleys but they didnt even turn the door was so light). It doesnt seem to mind being upside-down, i suppose with 4 eyelets you could mount it right-side-up - the added friction has not been a problem, they seem to used a waxed dental floss for string and it has only failed once when the door was frozen shut after an ice storm - it simply pulled out from the rubber washer on the door and was easily fixed. Yes it is STUPID expensive for what it is - But Mcmurray hatchery wants $300 for a couple more bells and whistles. Trust me it's worth every penny not having to go open up the girls when you dont feel like it or cannot.

At first I was skeptical about spending nearly $100 for a gizmo that automatically opens and closes the door to my coop. I anticipated any number of problems that would have me wasting my money. However, as soon as I installed the opener, paired it with a timer, and fine-tuned the string on the door, I had flawless door operation. Definitely worth every penny. Installation was extremely easy. I followed the instructions and had the opener up and running in under 15 minutes. It was a simple matter of changing from my pull rope to the string on the opener. The size of the string seems a bit small for the application, but so far, it seems like it is more than strong enough to lift a 5 pound door. My door is only 2 pounds, so everything should be fine. Daily operation is perfect. I have more trouble with the slight inaccuracies of the timer than anything, so that requires an adjustment every couple weeks, but the opener has not had any trouble, so far. Update: After coming out one morning about 4 months after installation, I noticed the motor had not shut off. I took the motor apart and found that a plastic axle molded into the housing had broken, not allowing the gear driven switch actuators to shut off the motor. I contacted Add-A-Motor by email and they promptly responded. After verifying my purchase, they had parts coming my way later that day. Knowing now that their customer service is so responsive, I feel even better about my purchase, and the value of the opener.

OK. . . I was going out of town and the last time I went the person supposedly letting out my chickens, didn't. I came back and my girls looked horrible and took three weeks for them to start laying again. So the next time, a month later, I went out of town I found the Add A Motor and installed it on the door to my 'RUN'. Unfortunatly, it only worked a day or two (not sure because I was gone). I tried several things, thinking it was my fault: maybe the new heavy duty power strip I bought (I have to have hook up my heated chicken waterer too), thought . . .heck, I forget all the things I tried. But each time, it would work for a couple days then stop. About 3 wekks or so in, I emailed Add A Motor and they were sooooo nice. The guy, Jeremy said he thought it might be the power adapter and had me send him a picture of it. HE said, yep that was one they had issues with and said he'd send me a new one and another switch part. The instructions were amazingly easy to follow (I bet a woman wrote them) and I was able to take the unit apart, replace the parts and BAMB!!!!!! It works like a charm. Thank you thank you thank you Add a Motor!!!! Oh I would have given 5 stars on all counts, but since I had to try and fix it over and over I only gave it 4. And I have had it on for only hmmm maybe 10 days, not sure. . . so that's why i gave it a 4 for logevity.

Learn from my mistake trying to save money! I bought this for my chicken coop. I have a custom door made from plastic cutting board 3 lbs. I installed it INSIDE the coop. It worked Ok for several weeks. After not closing several times & not opening a few I switched out timers which seemed to help a few times. The motor then started to inch while closing & opening. My husband is an electrician & after evaluating issues day after day dreamed the motor faulty. After contacting Amazon which contacted the company, I received an e-mail many days later. (Dec 19th made the request, first e-mail sent to me on Dec 26th) After replying back I still have no response. I contacted Amazon again asking for a phone number to contact the company. Amazon does not have a phone contact for this company. Since this company has only a 30 day return policy I am SOL. Now I am out the entire purchase price, so therefore the price point sucks. I am sure the company will fix or replace the motor as stated on a troubleshoot page for the fees listed. So basically at this point I need a door that works 100% and that is quality that I don’t have to send back & pay to repair. I have been advised by many to purchase the Chicken Guard Extreme, as that brand has many different purchasing options.

This review is different from most as I purchased the Add-A-Motor Model D20 automatic door accessory for my cat. I have an indoor/outdoor cat and needed a way to control his ability to use his cat door. Before this device, he would be able to roam day and night. With it installed, we can now keep him in the house when we want, typically at night. You can see my set up in the attached photo. I control the device with a WiFi outlet switch, which can is controlled by my phone and app. Overall, I am pleased with its performance and build quality. However, if I had to install it outside, I would be a bit concerned about a freezing door, and subsequent jam may overload the unit. Again, I have no experience with this. I have read other reviews regarding this issue. I did have a problem with the DC power supply. This issue was during the down sequence; the motion was erratic. It pulsed, and the door lowered about 1/16th of an inch at a time. Sometimes, it pulsed one to five times, and then it ran as it should. Other times it pulsed the entire trip down. A quick email to product customer support, a rapid reply within 24 hours, and another power supply was quickly sent out. The new power supply works as advertised, and my set up has been running great. Overall, I am happy with the product and the company standing behind their product. I can't comment on longevity. I will update in the future as we put it through its paces.

We purchased this item back when it was one of the only options available, and used it for 3 summers, until the automatic switch dial stripped out and stopped working properly. The motor is powerful and worked good. But the flaw is the switch setting dial that you adjust for the door height, which since it's made of cheap plastic, ended up stripping out and one day I found a door that was half closed. Luckily we were home when it happened, but it's worthless if it won't close the door properly at night. I won't buy this one again and will instead try a different one next time.
