This is a good product that has lousy instructions. Everything described below should be in the instructions but are not. First, the plastic pins that hold the back and front door frames together for shipping are not used. Second, do not cut through the bottom of the door as shown in the video! Doing so will greatly compromise the integrity of the door, as you would be cutting through the bottom support. This is evident in the video when the door flops around after it is cut. Instead, move the door up so it is even with that bottom support. The location of the bottom support can be found by cutting an inspection hole about 3" up from the bottom, in the area where the door will go. In my door, this was 2-1/4" up from the bottom. Cats can scale this additional height :) Third, the frame that goes on the back side of the door has too much depth for a standard interior U.S. hollow core door. Once installed from the back, it should be flush with the front side of the door. If it stands proud and you don't trim it, then the front side of the door frame will not fit well. In fact, the back side door frame is meant to be trimmed, as is evident from the series of parallel lines that are scribed around it. On my door, I had to remove about 1/8" of the back door frame depth. Fourth, inexplicably, the door comes with 10 long button/bevel head screws and 8 short wood screws. 10 screws are needed, but using the long ones would mean that the screws will contact each other. I had to source 10 shorter button/bevel screws. Fifth, if you don't want the finish plastic buttons that cover the screw holes to come out, use a toothpick to put a tiny drop of super glue on the side before installing. ... show more

We wanted a way to lock our bedroom door, but also let our cat come in/out as he pleases since our bedroom is a safe spot for him. Our door is not a solid wood door - it is hollow and I figured we could still make this work. My husband installed this and the directions were more so for a solid wood door - not a hollow one, which we realized this a bit too late. Since my husband wanted to still make this work, he took some type of glue to hold it all together... I figured we would be having to put a curtain up at this point. When he put the door back on the frame, we waited the next day to try to have our cat use the cat door. It would not swing back and forth like it was supposed to, so we improvised and took a small bungee cord and eyelet to hold the door up. Our cat uses this as it's intended (with the door up), which makes us both very happy. He is in stealth mode every time he comes into our bedroom now, since we don't hear our door open/shut anymore. If you have a solid wood door, yours will probably look better than how ours turned out... If you have a hollow door, don't drill holes prior to - use the plastic stuff that it came with to fasten it all together... or at least that is what we would have done. Still may have to use some glue... The locking feature would have been nice to use, but since we use the bungee cord, this stays open all the time for our little fur baby. He feels like a king with having his own personal door to use now. ... show more

Nice door, my kitty loves it. Needs better directions, we had to cut the hole wider than the directions state. As far as hardware, we have a regular standard door & the screws weren't long enough so we had to buy longer ones.

    • Great product. Not so great for fat cats
The door hinges are a little low so there isn't a ton of clearance. If my cat gets any fatter I don't know that she'll be able to make it through. Would have preferred a more rectangular version that wasn't trying to look like the door to a craftsman home. It's functional though and I like being able to close it. It's simple enough to install, except you can't rely on the sizing template provided. It is not big enough to allow installation with the door swinging freely. I had to remove it from the door twice as it was not wide enough. Definitely do your own measurement, or add a full half inch cut out on the sides ... show more

It works but it is made of not so great quality plastic, so be careful when constructing and installing- it will snap. Also be sure to measure measure measure and make sure it fits. This is not made for all doors. After installing and adjusting a few things, it does work well enough.

It was easy to install due to the clear instructions that are provided. The cutout template it super helpful.The thickness of my door was perfect for it, and mine are standard doors, so most people should be OK. The door works fine and the kitty cats have no problem coming in and out.
