Ever wondered why some plant do better than others? I have found the answer in my case from the ph of the soil, the ideal temperature of the soil, moisture content and light conditions. Tomatoes and green beans like acidic soil with moist but not soggy soil and sweet and snap peas like slightly alkaline soil with consistent slightly moist soil. My soil tested too alkaline for tomatoes and too often watered, so they didn’t do too well while the peas thrived with daily watering. Only after probing with this amazingly handy soil tester did I know my problems. My Aloe Vera plant had too much moisture in the soil and some other plants were too dry. For the very reasonable price for this amazing tester, I can keep additional testers in the more sensitive plants inside to monitor daily when to water or to adjust the pH, etc. The tester comes with directions in the box to explain the use but is almost self explanatory. The unit requires 4 AAA batteries so now is a good time to add that to your order. I initially purchased one but will be ordering more today. There is no need to wait until you try it out like I did - best to order three or four at the same time. With a simple touch of the right button to turn on you can immediately see the condition of the soil. They also shut off automatically to save battery life. The green screen is easy to read and overall the tester is easy to use. There are more pricey testers available, usually more than double the price, but don’t even have 4 different tests all in one unit. Happy plants happy life! (Don’t tell anyone but it also works great to test temperature and pH of your hot tub. Mine tested too acidic!)

We have tried / owned a many soil meters over the years and I've never found any of them to be 100% accurate. Developed full admonition for older analog style. You know the ones with an arrow that moves from left to right in the wind, their value depends on what position you are looking at the meter at. You look from the left side one value, from right another. And if you lay on the ground to look dead center at an analog meter may be you can get a value (of course depending on position of the Sun as may be hard to read). With analogs you never fully know if it works, batteries could be half dead and the arrow would still move. etc... Was happy to try YAMRON 4-in-1 Digital Soil Moisture Meter. Here the screen is bright, the values are easy to read. It is somewhat accurate. Many wants.. We have way more expensive soil tester, but that one requires every 90 days calibration. I really like that meter on how easy it is to use and how fast it measures. How easy it is to flip between Celsius and Fahrenheit and between moisture measurements and PH. Few cons too: 1) Wish it would show values on digital scale and not: wet+ / wet / normal / dry.. Something more in terms of "Wet 80%". Same with the Sunlight instead of just "low". 2) Wish it could show humidity levels 3) Ability to freeze data. (like press a button and pull sensor out of soil ) 4) Wish it had: a way to calibrate, measured data, 5) It uses 4 batteries. I am happy with YAMRON 4-in-1 Digital Soil Moisture Meter. It does what it claims. The values [we tested ph] seems accurate. It is worthy upgrade over analogs. I still recommend it.

The YAMRON Digital Soil Tester/Light meter sounded like a great tool for monitoring houseplants. It has more functions than the simple non-powered moisture meter we have been using. Unfortunately, all the functions work except for the moisture meter. That was the one feature we wanted most; the others are just nice to have. The moisture meter always reads “dry”, even on plants that were just watered. Too bad, we had high expectations for this tester, but it seems like we got a defective unit. We had mixed feelings about the need for batteries, but we were hoping for increased accuracy.

__There are no instructions with this, just 2 buttons and the light receiver at the top of the unit. and of course, the display itself. You will want to read the Amazon page where the instructions are noted in the provided photo. (there should have been instructions in the box--who know how long the page will be there and that's a hassle to find the page when you are outside). __One button tells you the Ph to one decimal (e.g 7.2, etcetera). __The second button tells you temp/Ph/and light. Of course you can see how bright things are LOL, but the other information is less obvious. If you are getting the temperature in Celsius, a second press will toggle you to Fahrenheit, and vice versa. The moisture and sun readings are both in English and in symbols. __This takes FOUR triple A (AAA) batteries, so best to have those on hand. __The probe seems strong and is certainly long enough to reach the soil in a container that already has a plant in it (e.g. the display should be high enough above the leaves that you can read it). __I have a lot of potting soil in various locations/containers. Some locations are planted and some are vacant. I need a read on the soil conditions in order to make the proper amendments, so I am glad to have this as a rapid indication of conditions (especially Ph) in my containers. __I am glad to have this on hand.

This is a great tool for indoor plants so you can see what they need. I like that it measures sunlight so you can find a great place for your plant. I can't wait to use this in my garden so I can test soil temperatures so I know when to plant my seeds.
