I own two other cast iron skillets. My great-grandmother’s 100 year old Griswold no. 7, and a new 14 inch Lodge that I got for feeding big groups. I was not prepared for the rough surface of new cast iron and it took several rounds of oven and stovetop seasoning, plus I cooked on it almost every day for months to force it to get a better cooking surface. After all that work it’s has a nice polymerized seasoning that keeps it non-stick with proper heat control. This skillet doesn’t require that amount of work. Is it as smooth and light as my grandma’s Griswold? Absolutely not. But it is still very smooth. It was also noticeably heavier than the Griswold. I was expecting it to be polished like some of the fancy modern cast iron brands, but I’m glad it’s not polished to the point it’s almost shiny since it’s hard for those to hold a seasoning. Speaking of, I know this is a knock off of the Field skillet, and I’m curious how smooth it is compared to the name brand. I’d like a 12” skillet but I’m not willing to spend that kind of money to find out. On the first day I did one quick stovetop seasoning with grape seed oil and of course started with fried eggs. They released perfectly with about 1-2 teaspoons of butter. Later that night I caramelized some onions using the grease left in the pan from the eggs and they were also fabulous. I was very impressed. I’m absolutely not one to be scared of washing my cast iron with regular dish soap, but I am going to hold off for the first few weeks until I’m confident the seasoning is well established. As with my Lodge, I just scrubbed with hot water and chainmail unless it’s very gross and needs soap. ***the listing says it’s dishwasher safe, but that is absurd, please for the love of all things holy do not put this nice cast iron skillet in the dishwasher. Anyone who does this needs their cooking card taken away.* Lastly it came with a leather handle cover. While very attractive, I didn’t care for it. I left it on while I was preheating the pan and it started to smoke from the inner lining becoming singed. I think the silicone handle covers aren’t as nice to look at but much more functional. Overall I think this is a very nice skillet and a nice alternative to the very expensive modern cast iron skillets on the market.

I was really excited about getting this in, and it was worth the wait. This is a great quality lightweight cast iron skillet. It is very lightweight for a cast iron skillet, and is much easier to manipulate and to clean than the old fashioned heavy cast iron skillets. Being made of thinner material, this skillet probably won't last quite as long as the old, heavy cast iron skillets, but it should last as long as I expect to live, so that's what I'm concerned about. Unless abused, this skillet should last at least a lifetime. This frying pan does come preseasoned with grapeseed oil, but I ran it through the dishwasher before first use, just to be safe. I admit that I'm overly cautious when it comes to my health. It did survive the dishwasher with no ill effects, so it is dishwasher safe. I noticed zero rust after the first cleaning, which is a good sign. I use a lifting cloth when cooking with this skillet at home, but I can see the leather cover being useful if I were to ever carry this camping. I admit that I prefer cooking most things on stainless steel, but there are some things that cast iron is just better at, such as making corn bread. This cast iron pan, being thinner than most cast iron pans, is great at coming up to temperature quickly, and with the very flat bottom, it cooks evenly. Recommended.

This is the lightest cast iron skillet I've ever handled. It's a nice change from my regular cast iron. It's beautifully smooth and the handle cover is a nice bonus. I've used this skillet 3 times, and each time I've had great results. I don't think it holds heat as well as a normal cast iron since it's thinner but that hasn't been a huge issue for the dishes I made.

Cast iron is the only way to cook!! That said, we are getting older and those heavy pans are more of a struggle to work with. Enter the Cooklife LIGHT cast iron pan :D This thing rocks!! Comes pre-seasoned at the beginning, and cooks up just as lovely as those heavy pans! Hubby moved us to the carnivore diet a couple years ago, we eat a LOT of steak :P This awesome pan does a fantastic, even sear and cleans up just like our heavy pans. It comes with a leather handle cover (because the handles get HOT) which works really well and a little scrapper and cleaning rag. All the accessories are top notch as well!! Fabulous product and just the right size for the two of us!!
