As a current Xtool user, I purchased the IP616 to have a carry around diagnostic tool and key programmer that was inexpensive and reliable. At unboxing, I powered up the device, connected it to my network and performed a complete update. This whole process took about 30 mins. The device rebooted and I was ready to use it. Xtool utilizes a very easy to follow GUI (Graphical User Interface) and the instructions are self-explanatory. To test it, I programmed new immobilizer keys on a 2005 Honda Accord, and I programmed a new immobilizer key with remote and the access code on a 2009 Ford Escape. All of which, worked perfectly, the on-screen menu was detailed and easy to follow. Additionally, I emailed tech support to ask a Rhetorical question about programming the user code on the Ford (I had already performed this service using an XTool D8 programmer, so I was well versed in how to do this). Thier customer service responded immediately, the instructions were very thorough and easy to follow. I then used the programmer to reset my throttle body after a complete cleaning and replacement of the MAF sensor. Again, the IP616 worked flawlessly. The other major advantage to this programmer is the FREE UPDATES, none of the others can compare. The other great advantage is the cost. It is one of the least expensive programmers that also does immobilizer programming. Keep in mind, there are even far more advanced programmers such as the D8 and up that offer a myriad of additional services. This is designed for the average DIYer who not only turns wrenches, but wants to do the key programming as well. That is were this unit shines. It has more than enough features for the average person, even slightly advanced shade tree mechanic at a cost that is quite reasonable. The battery life is great and the live data and recorder are awesome. If you are planning to use a programmer in a professional capacity, you should step up to the D8 or higher. I had purchased the much more full-featured X100 PAD3 previously, which I really love, but I've found I often need a lighter-duty, smaller, simpler diagnostic tool. When I saw this new XTOOL P710-IP616, last month, I ordered it right away. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to review it until now, but that's given me more time to try out the device. Now, roughly six weeks later, here's my candid opinion of the P710: The first thing I noticed was the small size and weight of the kit, making it easy to store and to carry between vehicles. The case also seems sturdy and well made. I especially like the metal clasps more than the PAD3 case's plastic latches, which are harder to securely snap closed than the P710's metal alternatives. I was quite impressed at first, but then there were some awkward issues when unpacking and repacking the case. The Velcro straps that hold the tablet securely in place are stiff, springy, and annoying when trying to unfasten or refasten them. They just spring right back together while you try to remove the tablet. I finally figured out that I could tuck the ends into the edges of the case. That was still awkward, but it worked. Cloth straps would likely have been a better design choice. Inside the case are four cut-out compartments: one for the P710 tablet and three for its few accessories, which include an ODB2 cable, a heavy-duty USB cable for charging or transferring files to/from a computer, and a charging cube with three international plug adapters. When returning all the accessories to the case, I found that they didn't fit as nicely back into position as they were from the factory. The electrical plug(s) and the OBD2 connectors hit the screen of the tablet when the case was being closed. I was worried about possible digitizer damage. Flipping the tablet over resolved my worries, leaving the screen pressed only against the firm foam padding of the case. Because the P710's software runs on a fully functional Android tablet, there are countless additional purposes for which this device might be used, depending on the user's needs. To install compatible Android apps, a Google account is needed, with credentials being entered from the built-in web browser. The tablet isn't really designed for this, and it takes a while to figure everything out, but afterwards, certain store apps can be installed and used (I didn't try games, so I can't speak for their compatibility, but simple business and travel related apps seem okay. As for using the diagnostic software, there are several up-front requirements before getting started: The tool needs to be registered via a built-in wizard. This requires a live Internet (Wi-Fi) connection, which you'll want to keep open when finished because updates must then be installed--lots and lots of updates (120+ for me). This took nearly an hour over my home internet connection, but it was worth the time. Before updating, I had browsed the list of vehicle makes and models, and some of mine were not present. After updating, most were (2014 VW Jetta was the one I needed). It took a few minutes to familiarize myself with the touchscreen interface, but very shortly, I was analyzing the Jetta. It had been recently wrecked, so certain codes were expected. They were all there: air bags had deployed, back passenger side door wouldn't close completely, and some sensors were damaged, but the engine was fine. I was able to save the report, touch a code to review its details (online), clear codes, run live or static diagnostics, and do pretty much everything more expensive units do. The only missing features were the numerous patch cables with non-ODB2 connectors and the external ignition key programming tool needed for working with some newer immobilizer chips. But that wasn't the purpose of this P710--my PAD3 has all that. I wanted something light, quick, and simple, and the P710 fits the bill for my needs. If you need to diagnose most popular automobiles (especially internationally), this may be an ideal tool. I would advise that you first double-check with the XTOOL folks, who respond quickly via email, to ensure that the P710 accommodates your target vehicles' makes and models. Then, give it a shot! The IP616 from xtool is a great enough tool for a seasoned technician and more than enough for the average DIYers who desires something more than just a simple code reader. The IP616 can definitely keep up and even surpass some of the big name scan tools with it’s 30+ special functions and resets. Full system scan is also a great feature because one may find dtc’s in modules that other scanners would be unable to access. In the short time I’ve had this tool I was able to program honda keys (non smart) and do maintenance on EPB system on an Acura with no problem. The graphing and the magnitude of live data that is available is very helpful and makes up for it not been a bidirectional tool. With the live data you able see the state of switches and sensors as they are activated whether manually or automatically. Although sometimes live data did get overwhelming, I was able to use the search feature at the top screen in order to navigate through it. A tool is only as good as the capability of the vehicle, so not all special functions will work on every vehicle. The customer service reps and technicians at xtool are always willing to help with questions, tool capabilities and vehicle coverage. Besides the great price for this tool the next thing that drew me in was the life time of free updates which will keep my tool current, because let’s face it updates can get pretty expensive. The IP616 is also a wired tool so it is powered and charges when connected to the vehicle so no need to worry about battery dying during diagnostics. But the internal battery also allows for operation when disconnected to review reports, update and surf the internet to view dtc’s. To sum this up in a nutshell, if you are someone who is looking for a scan tool that’s affordable, well built, and has the capabilities of higher end tools the IP616 is great option to consider.
