For years and years I have been using a $350 Innova unit that served me well, until it didn't...lol. It was too old to update to handle the newer cars and features and I was unable to do the tests needed to properly troubleshoot or calibrate systems. I went on the search for a budget friendly unit as I am just a DIY kind of guy and work on friends vehicles here and there. I did a lot of research and YouTubing to try and find the right unit for the money. I came across the XTools D8 and dug deeper. Watched countless YouTube videos which were overall positive for this features packed unit. After a few months of procrastinating my personal vehicle was having an issue and I was unable to troubleshoot it properly. I despise going to a dealer and would rather buy the tools and equipment needed to do something right and do it myself, so I pulled the trigger and bought the D8. It has so many areas and features, it will take some time to figure everything out and get used to it but I was able to do what I needed to do and have even helped a friend troubleshoot the issue on his truck. It might be 6 months or more before I am more in tune with everything this unit can do but will update this review once I have more valuable input to add to it. The one big bonus is the free updates. I believe it is 3 years of updates where other places, even HF only gives you a year and they couldn't even tell me how much the updates would be after that. I am looking forward to getting set up to program keys. I think that could be a good little side gig to do as well.

The package was shipped and received quickly. Very well packaged. The carrying case is very sturdy and well built. the adapters, cables etc. are high quality. The Scanner itself is very well built, designed to last a long time. The automatic Vin Reading is very helpful. I have used this scanner to program keys, key fobs, replace steering lock boxes, BCMs, and ECUs, on Nissan vehicles, Toyotas, Hyundai, and Kia. No Problem whatsoever. Lots of updates since purchase. For the price and the capability of this machine, its a very very good investment. It is currently used in an automotive shop and performs professional work. There is no hesitation to recommend this XTOOL D8 Scanner.

Upon the arrival of this automotive diagnostic scan tool, I was highly impressed by the care for packaging. While unboxing, you can already tell this is an excellent test tool. Once I got it out, I powered the Xtool D8 up and found it was 100% battery life. Very easy to connect to home WiFi, excellent for updates. The auto VIN scan is incredible as well, I tested it on my 2014 Ram 1500, and it pulled it right up. Great for any auto tech, no matter what level of experience, even great for someone that would like to know what codes they have before taking their car to the shop.

I found a lot of recommendations about it. Truly the benifits beats the price. I used it the minute it arrived to go over my car and did the calibration + reset programs it has. This alone recovered 30-40 percent of its price. It is simple to use. It is user friendly. It is overkill tool for DIY people. It still has many upgrade opportunities mainly in graphic controls. This will determine xtool long term commitment in retaining users. Hopefully they would provide more special functions to older devices and not limiting them to newer models only.

Last year I was leaning towards an Autel but recently had the need for a key programmer. I got a dedicated one but sent it back after finding the D8 could do the key programming and didn’t need external hardware or software to decode the ECU PIN number. So far I have programmed 2 keys (all lost keys) & 2 remotes with no issues. One thing I like about the non-BT version is that keeps the unit charged when using it so you don’t have to keep plugging it into the charger. Another reason that I chose XTool over other auto scan tools is what I heard about their customer support. I have sent a few Feedback emails to XTool through the built-in form on the D8 asking for more functionality for some of the vehicles I work on (Porsche), and some user interface Suggestions. They did respond in a timely manner. This is why I chose and like about XTool – their commitment to regularly pushing updates and adding functionality. If a function doesn’t work on a vehicle, then send them feedback through the builtin email and they should fix it and push out an update to everyone. They have almost daily updates. Physically is is very rugged, easy to handle, and is a perfect size. It Logs Diagnostic Reports with your Shop info on the form (I haven’t figured out how to get to talk to my wireless printer yet), Records and plays back Live data, very east to take Screen Shoots or Record Video on everything, and built-in Camera. And it’s faster than most other scanners, even dealer scanners. If you have questions on a particular DTC Code reported, you can click on it and it will open a web page with info about that Code. It does have some figuring out how to get to some functions you’re looking for, with the half dozen vehicles I’ve used it with so far, since there’s a lot in this unit and some of the terms are technically mechanic orientated. I’m still looking for more bidirectional functionality and ECU/DME programming on early 2000s Porsche's but I’m going to help them sort that out as much as I can through their feedback. I haven’t got one yet, but it has a nice integration with their XV100 Endoscope Inspection Camera which is good in Porsche diagnostics in the models I work with because bore scoring is an issue that often needs to be visually inspected. The D9 is a monster in what it can do but it’s an extra $1000. The D8 is the best bang for the buck for individuals and small shops for a scan tool with Bidirectional control, Key Programming, and 3 years of Free Updates. It looks like XTool is really working on being the top scan tool manufacture.
