  • Great device for a weekend mechanic
The media could not be loaded. I currently own a different XTool scan tool (upgraded my D7 to a D8), but I was looking for a code reader with decent live data display to work with my son, as he wants to learn how to repair his own vehicles. We mainly work on our own cars ('02 Montana, '03 CRV, '10 Focus, '16 Impreza, '19 Cruze), although occasionally working on other vehicles to help others. The D6 fits that bill very well. The device is small (about the size of a cell phone), but has a good feel in the hands. The display is crisp. It looks, acts and feels like a more expensive diagnostic tool, but with a reduced set of functions. As a person first starting out doing auto repair, the D6 provides a full system scan of all of the onboard modules, as well as a full set of live data PIDs (OBD2 “Parameter ID”). Beyond a simple code reader, which just displays any current trouble codes that have been stored in the car, the D6 allows you to drill down into each module and display the live data that the onboard computers are monitoring giving the user more information to more accurately troubleshoot problems. I also own a few Bluetooth style dongles that have a wireless connection to a phone app. These are fine for basic code reading/clearing, some live data is allowed, and a list of common repairs for a particular trouble code. However, these types of devices tend to lead to people throwing parts at the problem, rather than diagnosing the issue with a data driven analysis. The cost of the D6 lands somewhere between a less expensive simple OBD2 code reader ($30-$100) and the more expensive professional level scan tools ($600 and up) which provide much more comprehensive bi-direction controls. In my opinion, as an amateur mechanic, the D6 is a great starting point. The D6 comes with lifetime updates to the software. More expensive tools are limited to 1 or 3 years included with the purchase, then an annual subscription is required if you want to keep up to date with bug fixes or manufacturers changes in the vehicles. In addition, customer support from XTool is excellent. I have had them schedule an onsite visit with their engineers to diagnose a problem with one of the actuation tests on my D8, and email responses to questions are usually answered within a day. They welcome feedback from customers, and if needed, respond with updates or software patches fairly quickly. Pros and cons of the D6: 1. It is compact, but the small screen limits the number of live data graphs that can be displayed. Up to 4 PIDs can be combined in a single streaming graph which is a nice compromise. Individual graphs can be expanded from the list, but must be scrolled up and down the screen. 2. A full system scan is about 25% faster than my D8. Very impressive, however no topology of the modules is displayed. This is understandable considering it’s price point. 3. Includes Auto Scan for automatically recognizing newer vehicles specifications. 4. Includes generic OBDII data scanning and 18 different “special functions” like oil light resets, and various other component adaptations, calibrations or initializations. 5. DTC scan reports and live data snapshots are saved to the D6 and can be shared via email as PDFs. The system remembers previously sent email addresses. Currently, the reports are defaulting to km units for the vehicle's mileage, but customer service is aware and will likely be addressing that in a future software update. Not a big deal. It does have global Settings for Units that cover U.S., Imperial and Metric. 6. Vehicle system voltage is constantly monitored and displayed. Overall this is a pretty good starter scan tool. Much more than a simple code reader, it allows for a data driven diagnostic which will help pinpoint the problem. This saves you time and money on parts you may not need! ... show more

  • Compact but very powerful scanner
I would not hesitate to buy this very compact but very capable scanner. It totally does it all. It is so easy to store in the car and it is very responsive. You get real time data and it works on any car. I have many scanners, but this one will definitely go right in the car to carry anywhere. I have already helped a few of my friends up in finding what their issues were on their cars. If you want an accurate, easy to use, compact and very capably tool with many functions, this is it. I have used it in my Tundra, S-Class and LS460. Worked great on all. I am certain that anyone can use this tool, all beginners, all professionals, or anyone who works on their own cars. Why spend diagnostic fees for anything, use this DIY friendly scanner and you can save a ton. ... show more

  • Best Bang For Your Buck
The media could not be loaded. Having spent the last few days putting the Xtool D6 (the 2026 upgraded version) through its paces in my garage, I can say it’s a serious contender for the "best bang-for-your-buck" title. While Xtool has professional-grade tablets like the D8 or D9, the D6 is a handheld powerhouse specifically designed for the serious DIYer or the mobile mechanic who needs speed without the bulk. Here is my deep-dive review based on real-world use. First Impressions: Hardware & Speed The first thing I noticed is the form factor. It’s a 5.45-inch handheld—much more like a rugged smartphone than a chunky tablet. * The Build: It feels solid in the hand and fits into a pocket, which is great when you're leaning over a fender. * The Brains: It runs on a dual-core 1.2GHz CPU. In my tests, it booted up and reached the diagnostic menu in seconds. The 32GB of ROM is plenty for storing years of vehicle data and software updates. * Battery Life: The 3150mAh battery lasted me through a full day of scanning about six different cars before I needed to reach for the USB-C cable. Capabilities: OE-Level Diagnostics Don't let the size fool you. This isn't just a basic code reader; it performs Full System Diagnostics. * Deep Scanning: I plugged this into a 2024 Ford F-150 and it didn't just stop at the Engine (ECM). It scanned the Transmission (TCM), ABS, Airbags (SRS), HVAC, and even the Lighting Control modules. * Protocol Support: A huge win here is the built-in CAN FD and FCA AutoAuth. This means you don’t need to buy separate adapters to talk to newer GMs or bypass the security gateway on modern Jeeps and Rams. * Live Data: The 4-in-1 graphing is excellent. I was able to overlay RPM, Throttle Position, and O2 sensor voltage on a single screen to pinpoint a stuttering issue at idle. Special Functions & Maintenance The D6 comes loaded with 15+ essential reset functions. These are the "bread and butter" tasks that usually force you to visit a dealer. * The Essentials: Oil Reset, EPB (Electronic Parking Brake), and SAS (Steering Angle Sensor) calibration. * Advanced Relearns: It handles Crankshaft/Cam Sensor Relearns and Throttle Body Relearns, which are vital after you've cleaned a carboned-up throttle or replaced a sensor. * ABS Bleeding: This is a life-saver. Instead of pumping the brakes for an hour, the D6 cycles the ABS pump to purge air from the valves. Time-Saving Features As someone who hates digging through menus, these features stood out: * AutoVIN & AutoScan: I plugged it in, and it automatically pulled the VIN and identified the vehicle. I was looking at a full health report in under two minutes. * Lifetime Free Updates: Most scanners charge a "subscription tax" after the first year. The D6 has One-Click Online Updates for life. No hidden fees, no expiration dates. * DTC Library: When a code pops up, the built-in library explains the fault right there. I didn't have to pull out my phone to Google what "P0420" meant for that specific vehicle. Money-Saving Value I calculated the "ROI" (Return on Investment) for this tool. At its current price point, it pays for itself almost immediately: * Avoid the "Dealer Tax": A single ABS bleed or Injector Coding at a dealership typically costs $150–$250. Do it once with the D6, and the tool is paid for. * Precision Part Replacement: By using the Live Data and Component Tests, I avoided "parts-cannon" syndrome. I knew exactly which sensor was bad rather than guessing and wasting $100 on parts I didn't need. * No Ongoing Costs: Since updates are free for life, your "cost per year" drops to zero after the initial purchase. The Verdict The Xtool D6 is the perfect bridge between a basic $50 reader and a $1,000 pro tablet. It’s fast, supports the newest protocols (CAN FD), and the lifetime updates make it a "buy once, cry once" solution for any home garage. > Pro Tip: If you're working on 2022+ vehicles, make sure you run the Wi-Fi update immediately after unboxing to get the latest CAN FD definitions ... show more

  • Decent scan tool
For being a lower priced scanner it is nice. I was able to do check the monitors in a couple cars, do a regen on one and do a throttle adaption on another. The scanner is good for someone who is starting out with tablet style scan tools. It is user friendly, has several good features and will get the job done. I especially like that is more compact than my bigger ones and is easy to setup and use. Only thing is it should come With a case. For being a lower priced scan tool it is a good option and worth the money. ... show more
