  • First time griller success!
Color: Black Style: Grill
First off, I have to tell you that this is the first grill I have ever used. As a single woman, I was never interested in grilling until I bought a house two years ago and built a deck in the backyard. With all that outdoor space to enjoy, I just knew I needed a grill for entertaining (and feeding) family and friends. I thought I might buy a grill and just let my dad or brother handle the grilling, but much to my surprise I really got into it and loved grilling hamburgers and hot dogs on this Weber kettle grill for my first backyard party just yesterday! I did a lot of research prior to purchasing this grill from Amazon. I chose a charcoal grill over propane because I didn't want to deal with propane tanks (a friend had his grill go up in flames because of a loose hose and nearly burned his house down--No thank you!), I like the taste and smell from charcoal grills more, and most importantly because of the cost. It was less expensive to get a nice charcoal grill like this one than to get an equally nice propane grill. The entry cost into grilling was more reasonable with a charcoal grill. This freed up funds to get some important accessories, which I recommend to anyone buying this grill: a chimney starter, grilling tools like tongs, fork, etc, a steel brush to clean the grates, the Weber Fire starter cubes, and some heavy duty mitts to protect your hands and forearms while grilling. I purchased all these from Amazon at the same time I purchased the grill. As for choosing a which charcoal grill to get, I chose this model over the lesser expensive model because of the ash catcher, and I'm glad I did. The grill arrived in its original box and was easy to put together on my own, with the exception of attaching the ash catcher itself. But I just kept trying (and referring to the picture-only instructions) and eventually got it. It was put together in about 40 minutes, and that was putting it together myself. One of the best things I did was lookup videos online about this grill to see how it was used and put together. I learned about closing the vents on the lid and on the bottom to reduce heat, and how to quickly get the charcoal ready for grilling by using a chimney starter and Weber Fire Starter cubes (which I highly recommend getting). As my brother and dad arrived to my house yesterday for our Memorial Day BBQ, each were skeptical about this charcoal grill because they have propane grills at home and like the convenience of them. "It will take an hour to get to coals ready," said my brother. "Those burgers are way too thick to cook through. They'll be raw in the middle," said my dad. Both were surprised when the charcoal was ready within about 20 minutes using the chimney! And after getting some nice grill marks on both sides of the burgers, I put the lid on and closed the vents to let them finish cooking the middle of the burgers in a lower heat. The burgers turned out perfectly! The best compliment was Dad and others asking me how I grilled these thick burgers so well without burning them to dust. LOL! It's all in the vents! And I think investing in an awesome grill helped, too. My brother and dad both were asking about the grill by the end of the party. I think they might be considering trading in their propane grills for their own Weber kettle grills soon. ;) Lastly, just a bit of advice to any amateur grill masters like myself out there... Do yourself a favor and start out with this grill. All of the excellent reviews tell you that it's a good grill. The fact that so many experienced backyard chefs keep returning to their Weber kettle grills is very telling. Also, be sure to look up recipes at YouTube. I searched for "hamburger on charcoal grill" and found lots of videos with great advice on getting perfect burgers. And bonus! Nearly all of the people in the videos were using a Weber kettle grill. :) ... show more

  • Comparison between base + premium, worth the price Comparison between base + premium, worth the price
Color: Black Style: Grill
I was brand new to charcoal grills, but I love the taste and was ready to make the commitment. I did all the research before buying the premium and I would love to share my findings so you don't also have to dedicate hours to go back and forth between the basic and premium options! Yes, I love the premium and think it was the best investment after using it! Also, I have it down pat where we can have a warm grill ready in 10 minutes (20 if you're fighting a Midwest -5 degree winter day). This is all the information I gathered from tons of forums, grill YouTubers (also discovered that's a popular topic), books and websites: The differences between the basic and premium Weber kettle grill: 1. Price: the premium runs about $70 2. Ash catcher: the premium has an ENCLOSED ash catcher (the cylinder on the bottom). So the ash is collected into the catcher meaning the wind can't blow it around and it makes removal easier. Something to consider if you also wear your best grilling flip flops/sandals like me (probably not recommended by Weber). On the basic, the ash is dropped onto the plate lower on the grill, leaving a lot of room for a mess, ash spreading, dog licking etc. 3. Thermometer on the lid- the premium comes with this built in. we genuinely don't use this much besides eyeballing it when the kid is closed to see if the grill has any drastic temp changes; to gauge temp I watch the charcoal color and use probes in the actual meat. So this wasn't a deal breaker for me and I would not buy the upgraded version of this was the only difference, but it is a feature. 4. Hinging grate- on the premium, there are two hinges to allow you to open part of the grate while grilling to adjust/add charcoal. I actually do use this a decent amount. The grate on the basic is a full circle with no hinges so you have to remove the whole grate, which is not ideal. Additional accessories I purchased to have the most success that add to the cost of getting started: 1. **charcoal CHIMENY**- gets the charcoal started 2. A good lighter 3. Grill cover 4. Meat thermometer probes (with a wireless probe so I could keep track of the temp from inside and not have to keep opening the lid) 5. A grilling book (not necessary but I have one that taught me how to set up the zones, cooking time, etc. it was used and $5 so not a big money commitment 6. Lump charcoal- I prefer this over the brick charcoal as I think it gets hotter quicker, but is more expensive! Bricks worked fine too! 7. Metal free grill brush- a family friend ingested a metal grill brush bristle so those are officially banned. I find the 22" size to be perfect. Due to being able to spread the charcoal out or move it together, I am able to grill enough for just a meal for my family of 4 or enough to prep meat for 5 meals for 4 for the week. I was so pleasantly surprised at how attainable and quick charcoal grilling can be! My family commented on how amazed they were at how quick the grill got started and the charcoal taste. Overall the premium was worth the additional cost, especially for the ash catcher so my grilling sandals and dog's nose are protected-which might just be my top "AMERICA" sentence of the year (so far) ... show more

  • Works
Color: Green Style: Grill
This grill was fairly easy to assemble, it has everything you need, and it cooks great. Pros: Gorgeous finish. My green grill has such a deep color that you'd almost lose it in a forest. Absolutely gorgeous. Looks great on my lawn. All the accessories. The "premium" version has a temperature-control grate that doubles as an ash catcher bucket, a handle with hooks for grill tools, two grates for both your fuel and cooking, an adjustable damper on top to control smoke/temperate, a temperature prob in the lid, a heat-safe handle... did I mention the lid has a hook so you can store it on the lip of the grill while you work? This is a truly brilliant setup. Grate ideas. The cooking grate has flip-open panels so you can stick something down and adjust coals as necessary. It also has handles for carrying, which double as hangers so you can hang the grate on the side of the grill while you prep the coals. It's genius. Cons: The temperature-control damper and ash catcher bucket only does an okay job clearing spent embers. You have to do a lot of back-and-forth adjustment to get embers to fall into the bucket, which can lead to extensive work if you're trying to cool off a grill fast. This system really works best when you're grilling early in the day, so the coal has plenty of time to burn down before you put the grill away. If you wanted to do a big grill later in the day, you'd basically have to leave the grill overnight, which could be a fire hazard - or else you'd need to douse your coal, which is a different topic. Bottom line: If you mostly intend to grill at midday for summer parties, this is a wonderful all-in-one system. If you grill mostly later in the evening to night, the ash bucket is just an accessory to prevent buildup. Questionable: Gas vs Wood vs Pellets vs Charcoal. Which is right for you? In short I'd put it like this. Charcoal is by far the cheapest way to get started. My grill, plus all the coal I'll need all year, still costs much less than a gas equivalent. Gas might be a superior grill a few years from now when I want to invest, but for now, charcoal works and I personally love the flavor. Pellets have probably outmoded wood entirely for most people, but pellet and wood grills lead to a lot of smoke, so they tend to be unsuitable for cooking in a dense urban area (if they allow grills at all!). Charcoal omits less smoke than most wood or pellet grills, and combined with its cheap startup costs, makes it an ideal solution for someone like me who only has a 2-person household and only barbecues maybe once a month. Overall: Highly recommended. Easy to setup, gorgeous to look at, and a pleasure to operate... so long as I'm cooking earlier in the day. ... show more

  • The best of the affordable charcoal grills
Color: Copper Style: Grill
This is one of the finest budget charcoal grills. Some background -- since 1995 I have been using a Char-Grill grill; it was outstanding until rust got it. This was a much BIGGER grill, with heavy cast iron grates, a swing-out gate to put in more charcoal, and a bottom pan to catch ashes. Easy enough to clean and worked well enough. When it bit the dust a few weeks ago, I was a bit hesitant to order the Weber. Looking at in person, it just seemed small. It *IS* smaller than the old Char-Grill I had. No side tables, either. However, all that has some advantages. I used it this past Mother's Day to cook ribs and chicken, and it came out fabulous. First off, there are no hinges to rust, and the grill itself is very lightweight, easy to move into the center of my yard where I always grill (away from the house). Assembly was easy, requiring a screwdriver and hammer (and in my case, a handy pair of pliers from my Victorinox Swisstool multi-tool -- assembly tip -- put the spring clips in the legs NOT in the leg receivers as shown in the assembly instructions). Total time, about an hour, one person, no stress. Once assembled, everything was solid. Compared to my old grill, the charcoal is closer to the food, and the heat directed much more towards the center. So my cook time was about 15 minutes less for the chicken (indirect method -- I heavily marinate the chicken) and about 20 minutes less for baby back pork ribs. The temp got a LOT hotter. No hinges and such make lifting the lid off a hassle -- make sure you lift off SLOWLY and rest on the hook. BUT that means one less piano style hinge avoiding rust out and so on. The thermometer is totally replaceable from Weber, as is the grill, etc. So if anything DOES break, you can replace it not the entire grill. That's a huge deal -- Weber has TONS of accessories for this grill which is very popular. Including center pans and grills for making whole turkeys and chickens. I plan to get that for Thanksgiving. Adding charcoal is easy -- just lift up the grill side plates and add it in. I'd advise if you are moving from a bigger grill, to adjust downward your estimate of how much charcoal you'll need. I'd add in the charcoal from your chimney starter and then just add as needed, if you have a drip pan in the center which I highly recommend. I added too much charcoal moving from my old grill and that was a bit hairy. Again, this grill burns hotter, with heat redirected due to the circular design, back to the center of the grill, and uses less charcoal compared to the rectangular shaped grills. Clean-up? Easy. Much easier than my old grill. The stainless steel grills are both light and small enough to fit (at least partially) in the sink and get scrubbed with warm soapy water. The top grill with grease and food required also some Kleen-King stainless steel/copper cleanser to get the stains off, result is fabulous. The ash catcher works great and the little sweeper does a nice job of removing most of the ash. I used a hose to hose out the last bit of ash and dried the inside off with an old t-shirt as ash is corrosive and we do get dew around here. The ash pot goes nicely in a trash bag and disposal of the ash is easy. You will want a side table with this grill. You can build your own or buy one at a hardware store. That's about the only downside I can think of. Really, this is a fabulous grill. Don't let the relatively small size fool you -- for three/four people it is quite sufficient. And if you need more space you can get the bigger grill or just buy two. ... show more

  • Weber Kettle Grill
Color: Black Style: Grill
I have used propane for all of my adult life. I saw this grill on Modern Marvels and had to try one. Assembly was a breeze. I also got a charcoal chimney to use with the grill. It will get the charcoal going with ease. You can use the grill without it, but it’ll be a little more challenging. I also got charcoal trays for inside the grill. This is nice for saving coals to reuse at a later date. It also keeps the charcoal lumped together to keep the grill hotter in the right way. It also defines where zone heating boundaries are. It’s a timeless design and it’s pleasant to cook on. This design came out in 1952. How cool is that? While improvements have been made, the basic structure is unchanged over 65 years. You can smoke meats on this grill. Is it a smoker? No, but you can do it. You can cook slow or fast on this grill. It’s a Jack of all trades product, which adds to its appeal. I’ve heard people mention that they’re using their dad’s kettle grill. That speaks volumes about the longevity of this particular product. I did buy the premium grill cover for it. The cover is noticeably thicker than a generic cover. I’m hoping that will help protect it pretty well. I’m looking forward to years of use with this grill. I’m super excited about it, but I get that it’s just a grill. Something so simple, yet so perfect in what it does. ... show more

  • Good grill for the gym crew
Color: Black Style: Grill
I grabbed this charcoal grill for my gym break room so coaches and members could do weekend cookouts. I skipped propane on purpose. I do not want tanks sitting around a bunch of lifters, and I watched a buddy almost lose his house from a bad hose on a gas grill. Charcoal keeps it simple and safer for us. The price helped too. For what this costs, I get a good size grill without paying gas grill money. First Sunday we fired it up, threw on burgers between sessions, and the whole place smelled like a tailgate. That made me glad I bought it. ... show more

  • Weber Charcoal grills = best
Color: Black Style: Grill
What can I say it’s a Webber 22.5 inch kettle it has everything you need including the ssh catcher at the bottom which allows for self cleaning the ash. The temperature gauge and the vent control on the top and the bottom allow for optimized air flow control and amazing bbq’ing. These kettles when used with a proper chimney and some understanding of air flow and where to place the meat for direct or indirect grilling really cannot be beat they are a classic for a reason. The one touch is a nice system to keep the ash in the tray in the bottom ease of cleaning and dumping the ash. The value is absolutely amazing. Functional beyond anything. Once you get good with charcoal you really will not enjoy your propane grill nearly as much as your charcoal that’s because it just grills meat better and we all know this. Get a proper Weber chimney starter to get the charcoal hot efficiently and quickly and enjoy proper charcoal bbq’ing. You can even smoke with these really well and learn how to lay charcoal via snake method. Weber quality is great. The one touch Webber 22.5 inch premium is an unbeatable American classic grill and I recommend anyone for any person who considers themselves a grilled and who enjoys meat off the bbq. The side is great and I keep mine covered until I am using it..just so I can make sure it lasts longer protected from the elements and believe me they last a long time. Weber is great. ... show more
