I read a lot of Amazon reviews for other baby monitors before deciding to give this one a try. I am happy that I did. Sensitivity This is an "open mic" design, not a "voice activated" design. I prefer open mic, and have always had issues with voice activated products. This unit is impressive, picking up a surprising amount of sounds. It picks up blue jays when they are drinking from our patio bird bath. It picks up the sound of the breast pump. During a storm, it picked up the wind blowing outside the windows. The sensitivity is adjustable - 5 settings. Range I haven't thoroughly tested this (haven't gone outdoors with the receiver). We live in a 3 level townhome, and have had no range issues at all. Notifications Beep and vibration notifications that are tuned perfectly. A light sound will not trigger them, and constant crying will not cause them to go off like crazy. Instead, when baby makes enough noise for a few seconds, the audio and vibrate will sound off once, then will wait for a bit to sound off again. Appropriate use of the technology, and nicely implemented. Two-way communications We use this feature all the time. My wife will be upstairs with the baby, trying to get the baby to sleep, and she will need something. She says what she needs out loud in a normal talking voice, which I hear clearly on one of the handsets. I use the push-to-talk on the handset to talk back to her, confirming that I'll bring her whatever she needs. In a 3 story townhouse, this has made our lives much easier; no shouting up/down the stairs, and no need to change floors to communicate clearly. I have a feeling we will continue to use this system even after baby has grown, due to the convenience. We keep one receiver on the first floor, another on the second, and the send unit on the third floor. It's easy to forget the listener is on, so be warned! We have had entire conversations with company over, thinking we were having a private conversation, when it was actually being broadcast throughout the house. Secure communications Uses digital communications with frequency hopping. This is great, because someone with a radio cannot listen in on our conversations. Sound quality and interference Zero interference, and the sound quality is crisp and clear without any noise. Friends with kids comment on how clean and clear the sound is. Overall, we are extremely happy with this product. Thankfully, we haven't had any issues with it (knock on wood), though I have seen in these reviews that others have. We would highly recommend, and we would buy another one. At this time, we have had this unit for 2 and 1/2 months. ***** 6-month Update: We have had this for 6 months now with zero significant issues. I read about the "unlinked" beep prior to purchase. I have experienced this with this product. It is easy to fix - reboot the receiver. Unplug it from the wall socket and remove the battery, count to 10, then reconnect it all. It's a digital device, which means it's a tiny little computer. Every now and then, it needs a power cycle. This is the best monitor out there, in my opinion. Simple, and it works perfectly. The only gremlin (reboot) is easy to live with. I am extremely happy with this product. Highly recommended.

Reliable Audio Baby Monitor with Extra Peace of Mind The VTech DM221-2 has been a solid and practical monitor in our household. Setup was effortless—plug in the baby unit, charge the parent units, and it was ready to go. Having two parent units is a big plus: one stays by the bed at night while the other can be carried around the house or clipped to a waistband during the day. The sound quality is excellent. It picks up even the smallest noises without the constant static or hum that I’ve noticed on cheaper analog monitors. The range is impressive—I’ve walked out to the yard and still had a clear signal. The LED sound indicator is handy when I want to mute the volume but still keep an eye on noise levels. The two-way intercom is more useful than I expected. It’s nice being able to quickly reassure my child with my voice without running into the room. The little night light loop is soft and gentle—just enough glow without being distracting. Battery life on the parent units is decent if you keep them charged regularly, though like most monitors, they’re best left plugged in when possible. One minor quirk: if you live in a busy apartment building, there’s a chance of picking up interference, but turning the units off and back on usually fixes it. Bottom line: A dependable, long-range baby monitor with clear audio, two parent units, and helpful extras like talk-back and a night light. Great value for families looking for reliable, no-frills monitoring.

This monitor system has been a trouble-free worry-remover for me. I am using it to keep track of my husband's needs, as I care for the rest of our household, inside and out. He sleeps now in a first-floor room next to a bathroom and close to the kitchen. He gets IV nutrition for 12 hours a day and is tethered to his IV administration setup. Plus, he is weak from a month in the hospital, so he can't do a lot for himself. We have a Linksys EA3500 Router. (Sorry, That's all I know about the channel, frequency, whatever..) The monitor signal has to "cross" this signal and it has not caused any interference at all. The range is well capable of letting me get out in the garden or into the barn, or even across the street (through LOTS of power, cable and telephone lines.) Transmission and reception have been loud & clear at every distance. Though I haven't tried 1000', it is certainly completely adequate for our rambling old house and 5 acre yard and barns. I also like the fact that I talk to my husband from anywhere, to ask if he needs something, etc. Of course, I hear him if he calls out to me. NB Adults are noisier sleepers than babies, but I found that I quickly became accustomed to his "normal" nighttime noises. I quickly learned to recognize the ones I should get up for...like the IV pump bleeping, etc. So I get a pretty good night's sleep. As for the "Parent" batteries not lasting very long...I have found that to be true. They don't last very long...maybe 3-4 hours. But what I do is take the monitor in my bedroom in the morning as my portable monitor. Then, when it starts bleeping that the battery is going dead, I just exchange it with the monitor in our family room. If that unit's battery starts to go, I repeat the switch. Works fine, because you get plenty of notice that the battery needs recharging. Such peace of mind PS I forgot to post this review 2 months ago when I got these monitors. This week, one of the receivers started shutting itself off. What a nuisance, and unsafe, too, because I rely on them tp get me tom husband when he needs me! I will contact the manufacturer...and I will keep you posted.

This system is okay for the price. Range is good for us and we can usually hear everything that's going on so sensitivity is not an issue. We use the walkie talkie function more than expected between my husband and I. A few improvements that it needs are: 1. Better battery life - we used the 750 mAh battery that came with the set and we bought the 1000 mAh to upgrade and seems like neither lasts the 18 hrs the description says. It feels like it only last at most 12 hrs before needing to charge. We bought two parent unit set and use one to charge batteries. 2. Louder volume - even when I have it at max (level 5), I cannot hear the baby over the running water when I'm doing dishes. So I do dishes with less water pressure just so I can listen to the monitor. 3. AAA Batteries - When we were deciding on which monitor to buy, we saw that this set was able to use conventional AAA batteries which seemed like a good backup if the rechargeables ran out of juice. However when we got it, the compartment for the batteries do not have the contact points for conventional batteries which was disappointing considering that was a selling point for us. It's only able to use the rechargeable batteries. Update: After using this a few months, we discovered that the batteries were dying quicker when we turned the parent unit on and off. We used to turn it off when the baby was with us and not in her room. Afterwards, when we left the parent unit on continuously, it lasted up to 4 days before we got low battery beeping. For that improvement I added a star. The low battery beeping used to start when we turned it back on after one use and last for days before battery would actually die.

We have been using this monitor for almost a year and love it. We had a no WiFi video monitor for our first baby and besides the trouble with charging it constantly and carrying it around from room to room, constantly checking the video feed almost added stress and it stopped working after less than a year so we had to buy a replacement. For our second, we wanted something different, and no WiFi was important to us. These monitors are basic, functional, and zero drama. Plug them in and they work. We keep one adult end in our bedroom and the other in the living room, so we never need to worry about where the monitor is. Depending on your preference, you can just leave them on all the time - we often do this. There are several sound sensitivity settings, and they can get LOUD. I have the baby end on the opposite side of the nursery from the crib and it picks up noise perfectly. The range is great, even across first/second floors. We recommend these without any hesitation.

I had this unit shipped overnight after our NTM-910YLW - Sony Baby Call Nursery Monitor unit started having constant issues with a ticking noise that would not have been very sleep-friendly for parents. Prior to this, we would get interference with cell phones and other electronic devices intermittently, but we perservered. Let me note first that I have only just got the VTech today, but already I like it. I chose the model with two receivers so that we could have them permanently in the two rooms most frequented (bedroom and living room). The parent units require an initial 11-18 hour charge before unplugging and using without the power cord. There are two different instructions. Therefore, I would suggest going with the longer charge to ensure the battery is well conditioned. Aside from the hiccups that our Sony had, let me point out some major 'user-related' differences. The Sony NTM 900 that we bought had only one parent unit. This particular VTech monitor came with two parent units. Sometimes when going to bed, I'd forget to grab the monitor, so it's one little hassle I don't have to consider now. The Sony NTM 900 is analogue and while you can adjust channels, if you have a lot of electronics, or many neighbors, you will probably find this is not the model for you. The VTech is digital and uses DECT Technology (the same stuff as is used with cordless telephones). I'm not sure that a police scanner won't pick up on your baby conversations, but they claim it's very secure. So far, I have no outside interference, funny noises etc (unless you count the baby babble). Even though we have a sound machine in baby's bedroom and the lullaby is always going, the Vtech monitor is barely picking it up, but it will respond when baby starts to make a noise. I like this, because I'm starting to go a little crazy with Rock-A-By Baby and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. The Vtech has different options for being alerted to baby noises. You can set it to vibrate, have a sound alert, or actually hearing the baby. It also has the ability to talk from the parent unit to the baby unit so that if you wish to soothe baby without going in and disturbing him/her, you can. The Sony NTM 900 was one-way only. This was the first time I had chosen one day shipping and am very pleased with Amazon (and UPS's) service. It was worth it. I can sleep in my bed again tonight and not in the nursery. Update 09/23/2012: Roaming distance outside is at least 250-300 yards (at a guess because I'm not good with guessing distance) and product is still working perfectly without interference. I'd definitely recommend a digital monitor over an analogue one. Update 05/04/2013: Product worked great, but after the baby unit was disconnected from the wall recently (by mistake), we have been unable to resynchronize the parent units to the baby unit, which renders them pretty useless. So, while I rated this as a good product, it could be something we're doing wrong, so I'm a bit loathe to downgrade my initial review just yet. Just note that I'm not the only person to have had this issue.

We already had a webcam in the baby's room, but found that we needed something that would have the audio always available at night so that we would hear the baby when he stirred before he started crying. The monitor has really helped during the day too because our baby now naps in his crib. We definitely needed two parental monitors (one upstairs in our bedroom, one downstairs) and these give great coverage without having to remember to carry one around. Pros: - The monitor picks up his whimpers and soft cries very clearly (and obviously louder sounds) so we are able to get to him before he is too upset. - Monitor has a large range with no problem in / out of the house. We use it in our 2-story house with his room in the middle of the upstairs with no problem or interference with other devices, etc. - Talk option to give replies to someone in the baby's room if they are asking a question. Some possible cons that we haven't find to be much of a problem: - Even with full sensitivity, you can not hear the baby breathing -- we can with the audio from the webcam which is much farther away. At first I was worried about this, but then I realized that it was not really not necessary. - Battery life is a few hours as other reviews mention (uses old style phone batteries instead of newer technology), but we use these monitors mostly in set places so we usually leave them plugged in. - Base unit does not have a battery, which would be nice if the power went out - Occasionally the "Talk" mode on one of the parent unit seems to get stuck on somehow (button is not physically stuck, but it was used in Talk mode recently), but turning the offending parental unit off / on fixes the problem. We've had the monitor for several months now without the linking problem that some other reviews mentioned, which I was initially worried about...so far so good. Overall it has been a great monitor and I would purchase it again.

My Mother had fallen at night in her bedroom and was unable to get up for quite a while. She was also unable to yell loudly enough for my father to hear her. He sleeps in another bedroom and does not wear his hearing aids at night. I was very concerned about that situation and started looking for something that would assist them to communicate with each other, even if my Mother was unable to reach a communication device. I first thought of walkie talkies, but realized that would require her carrying it with her and being able to push the button in order for him to hear her. Then I thought about baby monitors. When I started reading reviews on these, I saw a lot of other people were using them for elder care and safety. The base unit picks up sounds without effort on the part of the one needing that level of assistance. The "parent unit" or caregiver in this case received the sound without effort as well. Then the caregiver can use the parent unit as essentially a walkie talkie to talk through the base unit if needed or to go see what the issue is. Also with the 2 parent units, my Mother and Dad can use the two units during the day to communicate with each other as long as the base unit is left on in the bedroom. My father can go downstairs or in the study where he normally can't hear my Mother very well and she can keep the other parent unit on the table next to her and call him if she needs to communicate, and he can call her as well if he has a question while he is away from her. After the easy installation it is working perfectly for their needs! My parents didn't need the video unit, and the sound unit is perfect for their needs. Both of my parents feel more secure knowing they can easily contact each other in the house or even when one is outside. Both feel and are much more safe as they go about their lives. My siblings and I are very relieved that they are safely in their own home and able to communicate easily both day and night. This product is amazing and does exactly what we needed it to do. Sound can be adjusted and doesn't interfere with my fathers hearing aids, is clear and doesn't pick up a lot of residual noise. The batteries seem to be sufficient for their needs but they do plug then into the chargers when they are not carrying them with them. The two parent units have a built-in belt or waist band clip which allows them both to just wear them as they go about their day. These are truly a blessing to our family!
