  • No babies in this household, but incredibly helpful with geriatric home recovery.
No babies in the house, but I bought this for my parents to use as an intercom monitoring system. My parents have a large, ranch style house and my father is recently home from a lengthy hospital and rehab facility stay. I live out of state and cannot be here with my parents full time. The purpose of this monitor was so we could leave the "baby" unit in their bedroom/bathroom, one "parent" unit out in the living areas, and the other parent unit in the kitchen. This way my mom can go about her day without having to run back and forth checking on my dad. We were initially loaned a unit from a friend which didn't have the talk back capability. Although this helped my mom keep tabs on my dad, if she heard something, she couldn't respond without physically running into their bedroom. The "talk back" capability of this unit is what makes this so very handy. If my mom hears my dad moving around, she doesn't have to run into the bedroom to check on him - - - she can just use the monitor to ask "do you need anything?". Since the "baby" unit is the one in their bedroom, he doesn't have to physically have the baby unit in hand - - - he just needs to speak and say he's okay, or ask for help getting dressed. Both parent units are press-to-talk (not open communication), which means they always receive sounds transmitted from the baby unit, but in order to talk to the baby, you have to press-to-talk. Very helpful because if mom is watching tv, listening to music, chatting on the phone etc, there is no worry that any of those sounds in the living areas are being broadcast to the baby unit in their bedroom. The baby base unit reception is incredibly strong. We placed it between their bedroom and their attached master bathroom. It picks up sounds from both bedroom and bathroom amazingly (and sometimes embarrassingly) well. Cannot vouch for the battery life of the parent units, but they easily last several hours, which has been more than sufficient for my mom's use. She takes it with her when she's working out in their garden, and doesn't worry about running in every so often to check on my dad. And, because little things also mean a lot, bonus stars because these units are discreet and don't visually scream out that they're baby monitors. On top of his medical issues, my dad's pride has also taken a hit with his recent dependency needs. If these screamed out that they were for babies, that would be another smack to his pride. We've been calling them portable intercoms, and thus, no dignity issues. The baby unit is about the size of a large lemon, and the parent units are about the size of a small avocado. All of them easily just sit on a counter or table without calling attention to themselves. Super helpful, extremely clear strong transmission. Highly recommended for any household - - -babies and adults alike. ... show more

  • Perfect for my elderly parents!
My Mother had fallen at night in her bedroom and was unable to get up for quite a while. She was also unable to yell loudly enough for my father to hear her. He sleeps in another bedroom and does not wear his hearing aids at night. I was very concerned about that situation and started looking for something that would assist them to communicate with each other, even if my Mother was unable to reach a communication device. I first thought of walkie talkies, but realized that would require her carrying it with her and being able to push the button in order for him to hear her. Then I thought about baby monitors. When I started reading reviews on these, I saw a lot of other people were using them for elder care and safety. The base unit picks up sounds without effort on the part of the one needing that level of assistance. The "parent unit" or caregiver in this case received the sound without effort as well. Then the caregiver can use the parent unit as essentially a walkie talkie to talk through the base unit if needed or to go see what the issue is. Also with the 2 parent units, my Mother and Dad can use the two units during the day to communicate with each other as long as the base unit is left on in the bedroom. My father can go downstairs or in the study where he normally can't hear my Mother very well and she can keep the other parent unit on the table next to her and call him if she needs to communicate, and he can call her as well if he has a question while he is away from her. After the easy installation it is working perfectly for their needs! My parents didn't need the video unit, and the sound unit is perfect for their needs. Both of my parents feel more secure knowing they can easily contact each other in the house or even when one is outside. Both feel and are much more safe as they go about their lives. My siblings and I are very relieved that they are safely in their own home and able to communicate easily both day and night. This product is amazing and does exactly what we needed it to do. Sound can be adjusted and doesn't interfere with my fathers hearing aids, is clear and doesn't pick up a lot of residual noise. The batteries seem to be sufficient for their needs but they do plug then into the chargers when they are not carrying them with them. The two parent units have a built-in belt or waist band clip which allows them both to just wear them as they go about their day. These are truly a blessing to our family! ... show more

  • Works, but not as well as we expected from VTech.
Disappointed with this purchase over all. The cost is much lower now than when we purchased it, but still too high for what you get. First disappointment is the base itself does not have a battery back up, so if the power goes out the whole system is dead in the water. Second disappointment is the battery life in the two parental units is short so best to keep them plugged in. Third disappointment is base loses contact or unlinks from parental units at around 500’, not even close to the “up to 1000 mentioned”. Forth disappointment is the parental units can not be silenced in that the menu select feature beeps no matter what you do. It will power on an off without beeping, but if you want to make any other monitor select changes like volume or the like, the unit has a rather loud annoying beep that will in fact disturb the resting so be sure all your settings are adjusted before sleepy time. (You can set the units on silent or vibrate notification so the lights alert you of sound or motions in monitored room, but the menu select feature beep is not mutable) ... show more

  • If you like to sleep at night, don't get this one....
Overall I was really happy with this monitor except 1 thing. It lost its connection multiple times per day. Each time it would beep annoyingly several times until it reconnected. There was no setting to turn this off. During the day, not so bad. When your newborn is already waking you up, you don't need your monitor to randomly beep during the night too. So it's going back. I bought another brand that cost about twice as much and it is working great. Using for 2 weeks now with no issues. This one started "unlinking" on the second day. I moved all other electronics, cordless phones, etc. away to no avail. So if you like to sleep, don't get this one. ... show more
