Had to replace the first one because our oldest threw it against a wall and broke the screen. So got another. Monitor works great. Tells temperature can talk thru it. Has to be far from the crib to get a full shot of the crib. Battery last all day on a full charge. Gets really good distance as well. Video quality is good as well ... show more

Lighting and picture is nice, super easy to use and worked right out of the box. The video looks zoomed in but it’s not, and you can’t zoom out which limits where you can place the camera. Like, 7ft above the crib isn’t far enough. May be better for a large room instead of a crib. Lots of connectivity trouble even when the monitor and camera are in the same room. This is a great baby monitor that does not need to connect to wifi! It is super easy to use and the monitor has a good battery life on it. I use this when traveling and for the price, it really is a great product! I have yet to have any problems with it! While I do love it, I am not sure I would make this my primary monitor (personally) I feel the wire that connects to the monitor is quite short and getting the best angle would be a little difficult for full-time use. The picture is too zoomed in for me and I prefer to see the whole body. None-the-less, the picture quality is great and audio works well for a great price, I wont leave out of town without this. ... show more

These monitors are my favorite. As a stay-at-home mom of 3 with one on the way, I like everything about these. I've purchased 3 of them, and my oldest finally went out (after 3 years of use, including being unplugged overnight, going with us on multiple trips, and being used for multiple naps a day - it was in my nursery). Of course I wish it had lasted longer, but I am satisfied with that longevity. Essential features in a baby monitor, in my mind, include... -the ability to mute (I can't believe they make monitors that don't - trust me, you want to mute it even if it is just for the minute the baby is crying while you are going to get them, if not, say, long enough to go to the bathroom first, etc.) -sound up and down - I am a light sleeper, I need it very quiet, and I can still hear even our white noise through the monitor, but I like to turn it up when, say, taking a shower or watching tv -a video screen (my babies are quiet when they wake up, I like to see if their eyes are open, and I like to know if something happened, like a foot caught in the crib wall, that requires my attention) -a good long charge - these last well over 12 hours (I run sound only for most of that time, no screen), though they take a bit to charge up after, often longer than the hour or two before the first nap, but catch up later in the day -a reliable charger, preferably not a usb one, those seem to break easily -decent range. Mine can reach a few houses away, especially if a house itself is not in the way. I can easily take it down the street to check my mailbox and stay to chat with a neighbor while knowing the baby is still sleeping soundly. I cannot leave the neighborhood, which is not a bad thing. -not terribly expensive -personally, I like the walkie-talkie option, I use it to talk to my toddlers sometimes, saying such things as, "Ok, it is time to lay down and sleep now" or "I am coming up to get you now, please wait patiently" This monitor has all of these features, plus more, like music (including different sound options, all of which last for 30 minutes, and continue with the parent monitor muted so you don't have to listen to it), temperature warnings (good to know if the heat/cool in baby's room goes out), and temperature on the screen. I personally appreciate that this is a closed camera, no video is being tracked or able to be hacked. The one thing I remember wishing for when I first got this monitor was a clip, to hook into a belt loop or something. My previous monitor had that feature and I liked being able to bring the monitor with me into different rooms without having to think about it. Perhaps it would be nice to have a battery in the camera, so you aren't woken up for any power outages, but I haven't minded that too much, power outages wake me up indefinitely anyway. If you are looking for a monitor, I highly recommend this one. After 3 kids and 3 different monitors tried, this is the only one I own now. ... show more

    • Reliable Eyes and Ears When Babysitting My Granddaughter

As a grandfather who watches a toddler granddaughter a couple of days a week, having a dependable baby monitor is essential. The VTech VM819 turned out to be a terrific choice for our needs. The setup was literally plug-and-play. The camera and the parent unit were already paired out of the box – I just positioned the camera on a shelf in the nursery and turned on the handheld monitor. Instantly I had a clear view of the crib on the 2.8-inch color screen. The size of the screen is actually just right for me; it’s compact enough to carry around (fits in my pocket if needed) but large enough that I can see my granddaughter’s chest rising and falling to know she’s sleeping soundly. The night vision mode automatically kicks in when the lights go out, and I’m impressed with how clearly I can see her even in a pitch-black room. It’s a gentle infrared, so there’s no red glow or any light to disturb her – completely stealth. One of the standout features for me is the battery life on the parent unit. On days I’m babysitting, I’ll have the monitor on and clipped to my belt for hours while I do chores during her nap. This thing easily lasts through a long 3+ hour nap with battery to spare, which is fantastic because I don’t have to be tethered to an outlet. VTech advertises up to 19 hours of audio-only mode, and I believe it – I’ve certainly gotten a full day’s use without anxiously watching the battery bar. The range is great too. I’ve taken the monitor with me out to our backyard while she was asleep upstairs (probably 50-60 feet and through several walls) and the connection stayed solid with no drop-outs. It’s liberating to know I can water the garden or step into the garage and still keep an eye on her. Audio quality is clear in both directions. Yes, it has two-way talk, which has been a cute feature – sometimes if she stirs and I’m on my way to her room, I’ll softly speak through the monitor, “Grandpa’s coming, sweetie,” and I see her calm down slightly hearing a familiar voice. There are also built-in lullabies and even a little temperature sensor that shows the nursery temp on my unit. I mostly use the basic functions, but I did test the lullabies; they’re sweet and not too tinny-sounding. You can trigger them from the parent unit which is neat. Any cons? Not major ones. If I’m being picky, the 2.8" screen, while adequate for me, might feel small to some folks who are used to smartphone-sized displays. But the trade-off is the better battery life due to that smaller screen. Also, it’s not a Wi-Fi or app-based system, which I actually prefer for simplicity and security, but that means I can’t check the camera when I’m away from home. For me that’s fine – I only need it when I’m actually on baby duty. In terms of reliability and peace of mind, this monitor scores high. No frills that complicate things, just solid performance. I can relax in the evenings watching TV and see the monitor on the coffee table showing a snoozing little girl, and that assurance is priceless.     • Meet bare minimum requirements

Used it for almost a year so I feel I have enough input. Hate that I have 2 cameras but can’t see both videos at the same time. Don’t like that I can’t at least control the camera via the monitor to turn it. That once the camera is set I’m not able to adjust it I have to manually do it. How im not able to dim the camera even more . Because of those very reasons is why I’ll be getting a newer one. But for the simplicity of it I mean it’s pretty simple , design is straight forward not hard to function at all. Security it doesn’t have WiFi literally just plug it in and it’s connected. Value for the money I think it can be a little cheaper because it’s not much to it . Sometimes it does get out of focus like fuzzy but once I physically move the camera a little bit it fixes just fine. If you’re a person that’s not tech savvy you can’t go wrong with this.
