Reliable Eyes and Ears When Babysitting My Granddaughter

As a grandfather who watches a toddler granddaughter a couple of days a week, having a dependable baby monitor is essential. The VTech VM819 turned out to be a terrific choice for our needs. The setup was literally plug-and-play. The camera and the parent unit were already paired out of the box – I just positioned the camera on a shelf in the nursery and turned on the handheld monitor. Instantly I had a clear view of the crib on the 2.8-inch color screen. The size of the screen is actually just right for me; it’s compact enough to carry around (fits in my pocket if needed) but large enough that I can see my granddaughter’s chest rising and falling to know she’s sleeping soundly. The night vision mode automatically kicks in when the lights go out, and I’m impressed with how clearly I can see her even in a pitch-black room. It’s a gentle infrared, so there’s no red glow or any light to disturb her – completely stealth. One of the standout features for me is the battery life on the parent unit. On days I’m babysitting, I’ll have the monitor on and clipped to my belt for hours while I do chores during her nap. This thing easily lasts through a long 3+ hour nap with battery to spare, which is fantastic because I don’t have to be tethered to an outlet. VTech advertises up to 19 hours of audio-only mode, and I believe it – I’ve certainly gotten a full day’s use without anxiously watching the battery bar. The range is great too. I’ve taken the monitor with me out to our backyard while she was asleep upstairs (probably 50-60 feet and through several walls) and the connection stayed solid with no drop-outs. It’s liberating to know I can water the garden or step into the garage and still keep an eye on her. Audio quality is clear in both directions. Yes, it has two-way talk, which has been a cute feature – sometimes if she stirs and I’m on my way to her room, I’ll softly speak through the monitor, “Grandpa’s coming, sweetie,” and I see her calm down slightly hearing a familiar voice. There are also built-in lullabies and even a little temperature sensor that shows the nursery temp on my unit. I mostly use the basic functions, but I did test the lullabies; they’re sweet and not too tinny-sounding. You can trigger them from the parent unit which is neat. Any cons? Not major ones. If I’m being picky, the 2.8" screen, while adequate for me, might feel small to some folks who are used to smartphone-sized displays. But the trade-off is the better battery life due to that smaller screen. Also, it’s not a Wi-Fi or app-based system, which I actually prefer for simplicity and security, but that means I can’t check the camera when I’m away from home. For me that’s fine – I only need it when I’m actually on baby duty. In terms of reliability and peace of mind, this monitor scores high. No frills that complicate things, just solid performance. I can relax in the evenings watching TV and see the monitor on the coffee table showing a snoozing little girl, and that assurance is priceless. It’s one less thing for this grandpa to worry about when I’m in charge.

Useful, lots of features

Does everything I need it to, and does it pretty well. I didn't buy it for a baby or anything, and I bought it used, but it's doing pretty well so far. The bad: 1. TINY camera angle. Even zoomed out, you get a really narrow field of view and have to pan around to see more than just a baby's worth of space. Might be a good thing considering how low-res the camera is, though. 2. The camera isn't very good, though I guess it's okay for the price. If you're watching for tiny movements like breathing, good luck. Framerate's awful, though I suppose that's not exactly a high-priority. Also the exposure is pretty bad too, if there's anything bright in the view, you're blind, and dark colors in general are pretty much gone. Still, "good enough", it's not an F, more like a D+ or so. 3. Night vision is finicky, I really wish it was a toggle. It's not great at detecting when to switch. If you have the camera in a lit room and the light is turned off, there's a pretty good chance it wont turn on night vision until you've panned the camera a little to kinda remind it to switch. 4. I wish there were more settings to mess with, it's pretty basic. 5. The zoom function and the speaker volume settings are buried in the setting menus, I wish they were buttons for easier access. The good: 1. The infrared night vision sees perfectly well, even in pitch-black rooms. 2. The battery life for the screen is about where it's advertised at, surprisingly. Ran a test for like 16 hours and still had plenty of battery left, even though I don't plan to unplug it very often. 3. Wide, wide angle to tilt and pan the camera, even a bit TOO much for a baby monitor. Makes me wonder if it's a repurposed security camera or something, ha. 4. The thermometer's kinda cool, I'm sure some moms out there probably have used it to save a kid or two after forgetting to close a window or something. I THINK the thermometer is accurate? 5. Haven't tested it yet, but if the screen has a range of 1000ft, that's great, it means I should be able to carry it anywhere in the house or the yard without losing signal. Everywhere I HAVE taken it in the house works, though. Should try carrying it while mowing the lawn or something.

excellent baby monitor

These monitors are my favorite. As a stay-at-home mom of 3 with one on the way, I like everything about these. I've purchased 3 of them, and my oldest finally went out (after 3 years of use, including being unplugged overnight, going with us on multiple trips, and being used for multiple naps a day - it was in my nursery). Of course I wish it had lasted longer, but I am satisfied with that longevity. Essential features in a baby monitor, in my mind, include... -the ability to mute (I can't believe they make monitors that don't - trust me, you want to mute it even if it is just for the minute the baby is crying while you are going to get them, if not, say, long enough to go to the bathroom first, etc.) -sound up and down - I am a light sleeper, I need it very quiet, and I can still hear even our white noise through the monitor, but I like to turn it up when, say, taking a shower or watching tv -a video screen (my babies are quiet when they wake up, I like to see if their eyes are open, and I like to know if something happened, like a foot caught in the crib wall, that requires my attention) -a good long charge - these last well over 12 hours (I run sound only for most of that time, no screen), though they take a bit to charge up after, often longer than the hour or two before the first nap, but catch up later in the day -a reliable charger, preferably not a usb one, those seem to break easily -decent range. Mine can reach a few houses away, especially if a house itself is not in the way. I can easily take it down the street to check my mailbox and stay to chat with a neighbor while knowing the baby is still sleeping soundly. I cannot leave the neighborhood, which is not a bad thing. -not terribly expensive -personally, I like the walkie-talkie option, I use it to talk to my toddlers sometimes, saying such things as, "Ok, it is time to lay down and sleep now" or "I am coming up to get you now, please wait patiently" This monitor has all of these features, plus more, like music (including different sound options, all of which last for 30 minutes, and continue with the parent monitor muted so you don't have to listen to it), temperature warnings (good to know if the heat/cool in baby's room goes out), and temperature on the screen. I personally appreciate that this is a closed camera, no video is being tracked or able to be hacked. The one thing I remember wishing for when I first got this monitor was a clip, to hook into a belt loop or something. My previous monitor had that feature and I liked being able to bring the monitor with me into different rooms without having to think about it. Perhaps it would be nice to have a battery in the camera, so you aren't woken up for any power outages, but I haven't minded that too much, power outages wake me up indefinitely anyway. If you are looking for a monitor, I highly recommend this one. After 3 kids and 3 different monitors tried, this is the only one I own now.

The connection extends pretty far throughout the house, I live on an acre and extends well out into my yard. Video quality is what you get for what you pay. It does the job. And I like that it doesn’t have to be connected to WiFi.

Finally the volume control I was looking for in a dual monitor!!!

We ordered and returned SO MANY monitors before getting this one. I really love this monitor, it's so nice and small that it fits perfectly in my pocket (most other ones are just so massive). We've had no problem seeing everything we need to on such a "small" screen. The range is incredible, we've gotten it to reach way further than the marketed range. We would have preferred a split screen, but they just don't make them with the volume customization that we were looking for... let me explain. Here is how the volume control on this two camera model (vtech VM923-2) works. If only camera one is selected, volume can be turned off or on for that camera. If only camera two is selected, volume can be turned off or on for that camera. If the rotating mode where it displays camera one for ten seconds, then camera two for ten seconds, is turned on you cannot control the volume of each camera individually. Either volume from both is turned on or volume from both is turned off. You cannot have it on rotating camera mode and have camera one on volume level five and camera two on volume level one. They have to be at the same volume level on rotating mode. You also cannot have it on the rotating mode and have volume from camera one on and volume from camera two off. Either both cameras volume is on or both off (on rotating mode). If during the night you have it on rotating camera mode, let's say your child in the room with camera one starts crying. There could be up to a ten second delay in you hearing it through the monitor since it is switching between the two. Again hopefully that makes sense. We have had no issue with this functionality at all, we really love how it works. One other small note, as you're selecting options on the menu, the monitor makes a "confirmation noise". It cannot be turned down or turned off. So if you go to change something during the night be prepared to hear that each time. Apparently I'm very passionate about this, considering I just wrote a novel, but I just read so many reviews for so many monitors while we were shopping for one and no one would explain how volume on a two camera monitor works. So hopefully I've helped someone out there who was like me!

We have always loved v-tech but be warned the camera needs to be far from the crib because it is a very small viewing angle (appears to be zoomed in when it's not). the rest of it is ok, video quality and sound quality are ok, not the best. the wake when crying feature is nice.
