Being descendants of desert animals, most domestic cats don't drink enough and they are thus prone to kidney and other serious health issues. This is why we have always had a fountain of some sort for our 4 legged family members since the recirculating water encourages adequate hydration. Our current choice is the VEKEN 84oz model with which we could not be more pleased. Originally purchased in November 2019, it has been in continuous use for over 4 years without a problem or concern of any sort. It still looks and operates like it did the day we got it. Is whisper quiet except for a light gurgling/tinkling sound as the water level goes down. Fill it up and the sound disappears. Our cat Charlie likes to drink standing up which causes quite the splashing so we got a good-sized rubber mat to go under his food and water (see photo). I would recommend this regardless as it likely quells any pump motor noise or vibration on a hard surface floor. You will want to keep the fountain clean. We wash ours about once per week. Disassemble and put it in the dishwasher is all it takes. The pump comes partially apart and we send those parts through the dishwasher as well (careful not to lose anything - they are small parts). Rinse the motor and filter thoroughly with tap water and a little toothbrush, reassemble and you should be good for another week. Sounds more time consuming and trouble than it actually is in practice. We do keep some q-tips around to deep clean the pump from time to time as it has some nooks and crannies that will collect sludge. Once every so often, we will place the pump in a cup of warm water, add a few drops of household bleach, and let it soak while the dishwasher does its thing on the other parts. This will sanitize the areas of the pump you just can't clean thoroughly. As far as replacing the filter, we put in a new one about once per month. It helps to regularly clean the fountain to get maximum filter life. As I recall, when the fountain was first purchased it came with 2 or 3 extra filters and we purchased a full box of replacements at the same time. They are not expensive and readily available on Amazon. One word of caution about this fountain - unlike some it does not have a reservoir. All the pumped water flows back into the body of the fountain which is not accessible to your pet. What this means is if the power goes out (or the pump should fail) and the water stops recirculating, there is nothing for your pet to drink. So, if you are going to use your fountain during periods your pet(s) may be home alone for long periods of a day or more, best practice would be to leave a bowl of water out for them just in case. Typically I would not come back after 4 years to leave a review but this product deserves it. UPDATE 2: 1 YEAR 5 MONTHS This fountain is one of the best purchases I have made. It is still going strong and my cat loves it. I had bought a spare pump because some people said their pumps died quickly. I have not needed to use it. I have ordered a new fountain simply because the original is starting to get discolored. Absolutely LOVE it. UPDATE: It's been almost 3 months since I have bought this and it is still working well. This fountain has encouraged my cat to drink more fluids and has been easy to work with. For the price I paid (about $23 USD) it has more than paid for itself. The biggest downside is that the filters for this fountain are going to be a recurring cost, but that's a small price to pay for the convenience and benefit they provide. I will be updating my review to a full 5 stars. ___________________________________________________________________________________ My cat drank, what seemed to me, very little water from his bowl. I decided that I'd get him a fountain because I heard that cats like to drink from running water. After about two days of introducing the fountain, he has started drinking a lot more water. So, that's good. When I went to put the fountain in his drinking area, I noticed that the plug was very short. I had to place the fountain elsewhere and also use an extension. I also noticed that within 2 weeks the pump became very weak compared to how it was when I first used it (or maybe even 1 week, I'm not sure). At first the pump was splashing water far enough that it would occassionally spill droplets onto the included mat (this is while using the white flower attachment). Now however, the water stays pretty close to the petals. I thought that perhaps the pump was dirty and clogged so I opened it up to clean it as per the instruction manual. The pump looked very clean and there was no debris in sight. I am a little concerned but right now it functions well enough. Giving it a full rinse is a little tedious because of the way you're supposed to route the wire. Basically it means you have to unplug it, carry the whole fountain with the plug to the sink, and clean it like that. Some people complained about noise level. I cannot hear the pump over the sound of running water and I find that sound to be very soothing. I greatly enjoy this product. I would be bummed if the pump failed, but I like it enough that I would buy another pump to replace it (ideally a higher quality one). ... show more

5/24/2023 UPDATE I guess I wrote this 5 star review too soon, the pump has stopped working 😡. I clean it every single week, have no clue as to why a brand new pump will not work. Now my enthusiasm for this product, is 5 thumbs down 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻. According to Amazon the defective pump is not eligible for return/replacement. I have no choice but to order a new one. So I have and am very, very unhappy. Never had this problem with the older unit which lasted 4 years, with 1 replacement pump. I have a Maine Coon cat that loves to make a mess with water! When he was a kitten I had to find a practical, economical way to solve that issue. I found it with this fountain ❤️. He loves the fountain & so do I, no more mess! He is 4 years old now. In four years, I have only had to replace the pump once, like after 2 1/2 years! It is very important to keep the pump clean in order for it to last, I can’t stress that enough. After 4 years, I decided to replace the entire fountain only because the weekly cleaning, with abrasive sponges and brushes had worn away the smooth surface. I thought the abrasive sponges would make it easier to remove the slimy film on the plastic parts, my mistake. I purchased the same exact fountain again because of the dependability, & quality, not only of the product but also because of the quality of the water. I add water daily and clean the fountain and filter weekly. If you are looking for a good, easy to clean, worry free, that produces quality water, without a mess, THIS IS IT 👍🏻 The additional filters and pumps are all available on Amazon for hassle free replacements.
