I did a lot of research before pulling the trigger on this specific door lock model, including looking at other options by the same brand. What made me decide on this one was the placement of the fingerprint and the smaller style of the unit. It was super easy to install but what I appreciate most is the setup. Took less than 5 minutes to record my fingerprints. There is only a couple of second delay once you put you fingerprint on the door before it unlocks but it is not a noticeable difference. Based on some reviews I have seen prior to this purchase, I must say I disagree with those who said there is a super long delay before the door unlocks. Once the door unlocks, the click is faint and not loud at all. The design is very nice and my favorite part is the matte black finish. We plan to replace our existing garage lock pad with a second unit to match our front door. Super happy with my purchase and for the price it was definitely a great deal.

Battery life is poor. Expensive to run.

I have ordered 3 locks and installed them on storage closets inside a building. They are used once or twice a week but drains the alkaline batteries in 4-5 weeks. They require 8 batteries unlike kwikset and other locks that require only 4 batteries. In last 4 months I have replaced batteries every month on all 3 locks meaning I have already spent close to the cost of each lock. I don’t recommend these locks if you want a reliable wifi lock. Multiple times battery died and I had to use keys to open the closet. Not very reliable. I have strong WiFi and I have tried to disable auto lock but same results.

Decent Lock

Overall operation of the VE029 lock is that it functions as expected. I like the biometrics and its location makes it easy to open door with just a thumb print. App, wifi and programming are fairly intuitive. I will say that the programming of the fingerprint can be challenging. It doesn’t always complete or read the print and times out after so many attempts. You have to be patient with it. The outside handle where the recessed Allen screw where located does feel rough on your finger when opening the door, but not that it has ever hurt my finger. The inside does not and probably just this lock and the making of it. One criticism is when the lock engages it says door closed. It doesn’t know if the door is closed and probably should be changed to say door locked, but that’s my take on it. All and all it is a decent lock.

I waited about 6 months to give an honest review, let be say this lock has been GREAT! I see alot of people speaking on the battery life which was true for me AT FIRST! I reached out to manufacturer and they help me troubleshoot problem and offered a replacement as a last result. The issue is you NEED to use Duracell copper top. They work wonders! After they help me diagnose the battery issue everything have been working perfect, I love this lock!

Excellent Purchase! Easy installation! It works!!

I'm a regular guy with some basic skills. Nothing about this install was hard. You can pull this off with a phillips head screwdriver and the hex wrench that comes with this kit. It only becomes interesting when you get to Step 4: #2, and it tells you to install the "backing plate" aka Mounting Plate, but fails to tell you you need to unscrew the 3 screws holding the mounting plate to the inside half of the lock to do that. It became obvious but.... I hand tightened everything a little at a time. The Strike Plate screws were longer so yes, a powered tool might be needed here but the threads are definitely made to go into wood easily by hand, with a good screwdriver. Not a butter knife. So, this was a retrofit project, and all I had to do was remove the old lockset, and strike plate. And basically assemble/install this into an already drilled door and frame. I did have to extend the "Backset Latch Length" as shown in Step 1: "how to adjust" diagram. Even taking my time, setting up, putting everything away, and registering the lock with our Alexa, the 2 cards, and my thumbprint, the whole process took about 1.5 hours. Incredible for me and my skills. This would likely take a Pro 15 minutes. Well, to be fair, both dogs wanted to help make sure everything was working each step so there's that lol. I sat in a folding chair and wore a headlamp for this project, and it really helped to get those mounting plate screws in there. It's only been a half hour but I figure it's going to work like it should or not. Be careful not to install the outside half to try to test the bolt action. Without batteries and being set up, the outside is locked. I thought I did something wrong but once the inside is on, you can test. Just how it comes set up. This went on a 40+ yr old fiberglass Anderson door. There's a built in storm door. Everything fit perfectly. I would post a Pic but now I'm taking it back off and painting the entire front door and sidelight trim. This lock was because we're older now, walk our dogs on our property and just really like the idea knowing the door is always locked from the outside. We can use a card key, which I plan on adding to my cell phone behind the case, somehow. My current case is too thick so thinner or superglued to the outside. Or it can hang on our car key fobs. A hard key like Grandma gave us when we got old enough to have our own. Pin code! Has to be the easiest, and finally, a fingerprint. My expectations for the fingerprint scanner wasn't high coming into this project. I have a flagship phone and it barely ever works. Why, I work with my hands doing chores and never wear gloves. So, no fingerprints some days. Luckily our setup, left-hand inswing, almost forces a left thumbprint. It's the one finger most likely to work for me. And ultimately, it did. Need to get the boss's thumbprint registered but I don't expect any issues. Based on everything, considering the old brass lockset was old and starting to get harder to lock from the inside, and doesn't have any features but a key, I couldn't be happier with this purchase. The paint is temporary until we decide on an entirely new entryway, and when that happens, I'm moving this lock to our garage-to-house door, and buying another model with a deadbolt feature, for a modern 2 holes in the door setup. No one really recommends drilling into fiberglass and I wasn't about to try it.

Blows away the competition.

Stop looking at other locks, THIS IS THE ONE! I searched exhaustively for an adequate lock to replace my 20 yr. old Schlage lighted pushbutton lock. This lock had one major feature the others didn't have, a one button passthrough mode so visiting family or guests can just open and close the door going in and out. The lock had great reviews so I took a chance. Other than the mounting screws being "barely" causing 10 minutes if install grief, once installed this lock is mechanically rock solid, way better than the Schlage. As for operation, flawless. The app and user enrollment is great, as many finterprints per person as you want, plus fobs and passcodes. It just works, with all kinds of failsafes. One note: Make sure you have a great WiFi signal or it can disconnect with disables passthrough (failsafe). It will also wear down the batteries after 2 mos. constantly searching for WiFi. I ended up adding a second WiFi AP for my garage and put it in Bridge mode. Also solved my overhead garage door issues too. These also make a great family gift.

Horrible battery life

Great lock, poor battery life. Had my lock for 6 weeks, opened it just yesterday fine, today it’s dead. Had to open with a key. For a lock that requires 8 AA batteries every month, that’s not very good. 96 batteries a year?
