  • Fantastic Uke
I am more than impressed with this ukulele. Having owned a Kamaka (handmade of Koa wood) this one has every bit the sound and resonance AND is a fraction of the price AND it stays in tune! So many reviews complained about this feature, but mine is a gem! I ordered two ukulele books and am doing classes on Youtube. It's a great instrument and the chording is much easier than a guitar. Get one. Oh, I'm 71, so age does not prevent you from learning this instrument! ... show more

  • Needed a little work. Company is fantastic.
Size: Tenor Style: Satin
I raised my rating one star. I've got to say, Ulumac is a fantastic company to deal with! If based on there customer service alone, I would have given a full 5 star rating! Still one off for sharp frets. After my review, they reached out and issued a total refund without requiring a return. I did not send them any messages. They simply took the initiative to reach it to me after reading my review. If that was't enough, they sent another ukulele for my inconvenience! They sent a tenor with the solid headstock and satin finish which is much nicer than the 90% gloss on the prior ukulele. Everything is as it should be with the exception of having sharp fret edges. This seems to be the norm these days, because every ukulele that I get from EVERY manufacturer tends to need attention in this area anyway. It's not a big deal. I sell ukuleles and that's why I have a fret file. Everything else is excellent. No glue smudges or finish problems. I will definitely buy more ukuleles from Ulamac in the future. GREAT COMPANY!!! ------------------------------------------- MY ORIGINAL REVIEW: Two stars off for the minor fixable problems. The frets were a bit rough. There was a bit of glue on the fretboard and bridge that I had to clean off. The tuner does not come with a battery. What the heck? Batteries are dirt cheap in China. The A string broke right away during my very gentle and incremental settling process. The included unbranded extra strings sound much better anyway. The fretboard and bridge were chalky looking. I easily fixed it as I do on all ukuleles. The wood grain is open-pore but with a clear coat over it. The two things I especially like about this ukulele is that it has excellent tone and also projects very well, especially with the second set of strings provided. The included gig bag is basically a dust cover, much like the ones that Luna includes with their ukuleles. Not a good choice for travel as it's basically a piece of canvas with a zipper. I look for nice ukuleles, touch up what the factory overlooks if it's feasible, and sell them. This one has such nice tonal and projection properties that I wouldn't mind keeping it for myself! Would I buy another? Yes. ... show more

  • A really nice beginners' Uke kit
Size: Soprano Style: Matte
I'm rating this as a beginners' ukulele, rather than a "professional" instrument—if rated as a professional instrument, I'd go for 3 stars—which for this price, is quite good. Note though—I'm not a Uke player. I've been playing various guitars and basses for just about 60 years now, and have probably owned 2 or 3 "beginner" ukes over the years, never really bonding with them. One of them may have even had a molded plastic fretboard, including the frets. But, I was intrigued, and ordered this one. It's very nicely finished, a smooth matte on all surfaces. The body is made with laminated Acacia ("Koa") on the exterior surfaces; I can't tell what the inner ply is. Plywood tops and backs are not necessarily limited to "cheap" instruments—some of the finest builders specifically use plywood. As mentioned in the Amazon write up, the back is arched, which is unusual in an inexpensive instrument—this is something that you will too on pretty much any decent flat top or classical guitar. The neck is nicely shaped. The tuners, arranged with slots (like a classical guitar) are very easy and smooth in use. The neck and fretting are reasonably flat. Since I'm used to "setting up" any guitars I buy, (and pretty much anything from a factory will benefit—my last bought guitar, a Martin 00-18, got a similar amount of spot fret leveling, and like this Uke, needed the nut slots cut lower to get the action to the point where playing on the first few frets didn't pull the notes slightly sharp) I gave this a once over, and while the playability has improved, and must stress that the use was playable out of the box. And, overall, the fret dressing was acceptable for a much more expensive instrument. The included manual is quite nice, and surprisingly thorough. The restringing directions are not complete though, leaving out about the need to secure the string at the tuner end—so, when you reach the point of needing new strings, I'd recommend using the internet and looking up restringing classical guitars for that specific information. You get a very complete kit. I think my main suggestion to Ulumac would be to NOT include the tuner and strap, and spend the money saved on making the bag a bit sturdier. It is nicely made, but just a single layer of thin "pack" nylon. The strap is fine, but really not needed (for me, at least) and while the tuner does work (and also on guitar, bass, etc.) I use an app on my phone. There is an extra set of strings included, opaque white, as opposed to the clear strings pre-mounted, which I'm pretty sure are the carbon strings that they mention in the Amazon description. There are several notices about giving the strings ample time to stretch out—that they will keep going flat for a few days, and the Uke is not broken. Once you have this at tune, with new strings, I recommend one at a time, stretching each string by tuning up 2 frets (one whole step), leaving the string like that for 10 or 15 minutes, and then correctly tune it and move on the the next string. This will usually cut that "keeps going out of tune" period down quite a bit. I'm off to learn "Tiny Bubbles." ... show more
