For the record, I'm not an avid fisherman. I'm a weekend warrior. But I have little place on a lake and do a fair amount of fishing. I own 6 Ugly Stiks - four 5 1/2' with pistol grip, one 6' with pistol grip, and this one. I wouldn't recommend it for a high end reel. There are MUCH better and more expensive rods for that purpose. So my 5 star rating is based on similarly priced rods. It wouldn't be fair to compare it against rods costing 10 times as much. But if your reels are more entry or intermediate level, I would certainly give Ugly Stiks a look. I currently use them with 3 Zebco Bullets, a Zebco Omega, a Zebco One Classic, and an old Penn 209. I use them primarily for dock fishing. They are extremely durable. One of them I've had for years. I've never had a bit of trouble with it. They are by far my favorite rod at their price point. I'm not a fan of cork grips. I love the grips on the Ugly Stiks. They just feel right in my hand. The light colored tip on the black rod really makes it stand out when you get a strike. I've caught some decent sized fish on them and have never thought the rod would break. I was hesitant since I have a gx2 but heavy action. I always struggled casting it, but gave the medium a try. This is so much easier and can hit a target no problem. I own about a half dozen spinning ugly stiks from ultra light to big water, so I am loyal to the rod. Each medium rod has been awesome. Can't beat the value. ... show more

In the past, Ugly Stik has been a brand you could count on for quality, durability and performance. Just received my new GX2 7ft 2pc from Amazon. Sad to say, the quality control is not as good as before. The line guides are not completely straight and the upper rod piece is not completely straight. It does not give me confidence that the rod will hold up when I hook that big one. (read other reviewers with same problem). I was expecting better from this brand and for the money. The line guide eyes are suppose to be new and improved > they just look cheaper to me. However, it seems to cast well and I like the feel of it. It's too bad we can't continue to rely on brands we have trusted in the past. Update Sept 2023: The rod actually straightened out on its on after a few uses. I think it had been stored in a bent position. I was able to straighten the line guides by hand. I think now the problem was not quality control, but mis-handling during storage and shipping. The UglyStik GX2 casting rod arrived quickly from Amazon and was very well packaged. I was concerned that it might arrive broken or damaged because of the fragile nature of fishing rods, but no worries - it arrived in perfect shape! The rod itself is very light weight and well constructed with a nice soft grip. I paired the rod up with a KastKing baitcaster reel and the combo is pretty awesome. The rod is very comfortable to use and easy to manipulate. The 7 foot length of the rod is perfect for me and overall I'm super pleased with my purchase. The Medium GX2 is a bit stiffer than I prefer, so when I order another one I'll order the Medium/Light one and see how I like that. I would definitely recommend this rod to anyone looking to find a well made and affordable casting rod! ... show more
