I bought this fishing rod to better my skills at fishing from the shore. For me, the 12 foot Ugly Stick is an on going learning process. Ugly Stick is a proven fishing pole at a very reasonable price. Therfore, I can learn to cast further without breaking the bnk. But alas, the 12 foot Catfish Special was delivered with a reel seat/clamp and not the trigger seat model as shown. For me, the trigger seat gives a reference place for your hand to land without looking. Your hand is in the proper position to "thumb the spool" when making long cast. No birds nest catastrophe on my reel! ... show more

This is my 3rd one. They are sensitive and have a lot of backbone. So far I've only caught stingrays but I hooked up with something big that nearly dragged me into the surf. Whatever it was completely straightened out a 4/0 hook but the Ugly Stik didn't miss a beat

The rod seems nice and well built, but the top eyelet support bracket that connects to the back of the rod was broke when I received it. I wrapped it in some braid line and seems to hold well. We will see!

I did get what i ordered. 8ft MedHeavy casting rod. It has the finger hook so thats good. But, almost every single eyelet was bent forward. After some careful bending, I was able to get them all straitened out. The ring on the top grip is disconnected from the actual grip material.(pic related) The ends of each of the 2 pieces were they come together were not smooth or even. I put heat shrink wrap over the connection out-of worry the rod would disconnect during casting. Another thing that dosent effect the action at all, is the "ugly stick" logo isn't strait on the rod, it's almost curling around the pole. Whatever. All of these things have led to my 3 star review. The color looks great and the grip is comfy. I will keep the rod and use it, but I am really kind-of dissapointed in the quality. I understand it is a cheap rod. But for 60 dollars I'd think it wouldn't be so ruff, but it is made in china.... I did just want a cheap catfish rig. I guess I got what I paid for. I'd reccomend finding one in stores so you can really inspect what you are buying. I am a big ugly stick fan, and still have the one I got when I was 13, wich was 21 years ago. These newer products have just been kinda dissapointing. Will report back if any failures happen. ... show more
