  • Extended Swimming Season
I am really looking forward to installing this heat pump to or pool next spring. This is going to allow me so start the swimming season earlier in the spring and extend it later into the fall. My wife and kids are very picky about the water temperature and will refuse to swim if the water is too cold. I am hoping that using this to keep the water at a more consistent temperature will allow our family to get more use out of our pool. As an engineer I appreciate the efficiency of this unit. It will be much more affordable to operate than a gas or electric resistive heater. The first thing I noticed is how heavy this heat pump is, the shipping label said 80 lbs. That being said, this unit is not exactly portable. I was hoping to only get it out and use it during the colder days, but now I am rethinking my approach because it is to heavy to move around on a regular basis. I will probably just keep it installed the whole season, and purchase a protective cover to keep it out of the elements when not in use. This heat pump seems to be built incredibly solid. The manual is clear and the user interface on the heat pump is intuitive. Setup does not appear to be overly complicated, simply connect the hoses and plug it in. I am planning to combine this heat pump with a pool thermal cover to help contain the heat when not in use. Overall, this is a very impressive heat pump for its size and it seems like it is built to last several seasons. ... show more

  • Solid little heat pump that is easy to install
I have a Turbro 50,000BTU heat pump on my pool, and I knew exactly what to suggest when my sister asked for suggestions on her small 3500 gallon wading pool. Its listed for above ground pools, but my sister’s pool is a weird design I’ve never seen. Its about 15” underground, and the rest is above ground. The most difficult part of the installation was leveling the ground to set the heat exchanger. After leveling the ground we set thick paver stones for a solid base. The heat pump fit inline with her existing 1.5” hoses. Due to the size of the 120V power plug it wouldn’t fit on the same receptacle as her pool pump, but I fixed that by extending another 120V receptacle next to the existing receptacle. We installed it last weekend, and we ran it overnight for a break in test. There was a noticeable difference in water temperature, but it will be a few months before it sees continuous use. Temps at her house are currently 50*F during the day, and its dropped to low 20’s at night. Due to ease of installation on the M18, and my previous experience with the B50, this gets 5-Stars all day long. ... show more

  • Heavy duty heat pump.
Unfortunately, I’ve already closed my pool for the season before being given the opportunity to review this pool heater by Turbro. That being said, this review will focus on initial impressions and apparent build quality. I’ll update once I’m able to provide details on how it performs next summer. It was shipped to my door in a huge box and was delivered by a pair of Amazon drivers in a large truck. Upon opening the package, I found the unit to be much larger and heavier than I was expecting. All of this really emphasized the fact that this is a solid unit with a superior build quality. Things I really like about this heater is the fact that it operates on 110v, rather than 220. While it may not be as efficient as a 220 unit, I didn’t want the hassle of running a special power line out to my pool. I can simply plug it into the same outlet that runs my pump. It also comes with the necessary fittings to plumb it into your existing filter setup, whether using 1 ¼” or 1 ½” hoses. The included documentation is well written and easy to follow. This heat pump uses ambient air to work, making it extremely efficient. This should make it very affordable to run. However, this also means that the outside temp has to be between 55.4 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit. So, as long as your daytime temps aren’t dipping below 55 degrees, this will still maintain temp in your pool. This will be used with a 14’ round Summer Waves soft side pool. I’m hoping to keep it going through mid October next year. Fingers crossed… ... show more

  • Heat pump using heat pulled from the air
I got this TURBRO 18,000 BTU swimming pool heat pump but haven’t had a chance to install it yet. The unit arrived well-packaged with no damage and looks solidly built. It has a clean, modern design and feels durable, especially with the titanium heat exchanger that resists corrosion from pool chemicals. It’s rated at 18,000 BTUs and designed for above-ground pools or spas up to about 6,000 gallons, which should be a good fit for my setup. The efficiency rating is about 5.5 COP, meaning it delivers several times more heating energy than the electricity it uses, which should make it an energy-efficient way to heat the pool once it’s running. The model runs on standard 110–120V power, so it’s convenient for most home electrical setups without needing special wiring. It’s also IPX4 waterproof, which gives some peace of mind for outdoor use since it’s built to handle splashes and light rain. The manufacturer claims it can extend the swimming season by keeping the water comfortable in cooler weather, using heat pulled from the air rather than relying on propane or resistive heating. The instruction manual seems to be through, and the included fittings and connectors should make installation easier once the time comes. For now, I’m storing it safely until the weather warms up and I can set it up properly. I’m optimistic about its performance based on the build quality and specs, and I’ll update my review once I’ve had a chance to install and test it in action. ... show more
