  • An excellent, affordable, and versatile bike/cargo carrier!
Zero complaints on the cargo carrier and bike rack, just used it yesterday and it worked perfectly and held the bikes very securely. I put two Large All-Mountain full suspension bikes on it and it fit perfect. Definitely could fit 3 bikes on it easily. 4 bikes would work as well, BUT 4 full size large/x-large DH bikes might be a little too tight, doable, but tight. We both bad 2.35 tires and the rack size on the tires was a perfect fit. If you have bigger tires, you could bend these with some effort to work. Also my buddy had 29'ers and I was on 26's and the tires fit perfectly on both. I went to a local store that specializes in bike racks, cargo carriers etc. here in Seattle and they didn't have anything quite like this. And the options they presented were about $250 for just a cargo carrier or $550 for a hitch mounted lockable bike rack. And this carrier in my opinion is a better option than both of those, and cheaper with the versatility of both! To lock it up if you are going to a restaurant (brewery) after riding you will want a 5'-10' cable that you can run through the bike frames, tires and the rack. And make sure you have a locking pin to lock the carrier to your hitch and you are good to go for decent security. Yes the instructions that come with it aren't the best, but it is pretty straight forward when you look at the picture and figure out how to put it together. It took me just under 1 hour and 1.5 beers to put together, but I wasn't rushing, I am sure you could put it together faster. Yes it comes a little scratched up, but who cares. It's solid black steel and if you use this appropriately you will be scratching it some more! If you care that this is coming a little scratched up then get a black primer rattle can and spray it. And after a year or so of solid use, maybe a good idea to spray it to protect from rust anyway. And there you have it. A good, affordable, versatile purchase! ... show more

  • Fantastic double duty carrier - HIGHLY recommended
I just sold my Thule back rack second hand for more money than this cost me to buy new. With the change, I've bought a waterproof carrier to sit on this (ROLA 59119), so for a couple of hundred bucks I have a platform to carry 4 bikes, or a platform to carry a ton of stuff on a camping trip. Assembly: piece of cake. Could the instructions be better? Sure. Could the pictures be clearer? Sure. But seriously, there are 3 lengths of bolt (t's really not hard to figure when to use the short ones versus the long ones, people), all the nuts are the same and one look at the picture/hardware it becomes pretty apparent how to assemble it. Top tip of the day: when it comes to tighten it all up so that the two halves of the tray are level and give you a flat loading surface - TURN IT UPSIDE DOWN. That way, it can't be anything but flat. This will make sense as you begin to assemble it. Bike carrier: I got 2 "kids" bikes (Giant, not sure exact sizes but approaching nearly full size), my wife's Cannondale mountain bike and my Giant 29er) without any issue on the back of my Jeep Wrangler (which has 33" wheels on it). See photo. This is without a hitch extender. It just fits, so a hitch extender would provide some relief if needed but not essential since the bikes are snug against the spare tire and it allows you to tie the bikes up to the spare wheel on the back. Cargo carrier: when not using the bikes, you *could* remove the bike tire arms, but frankly there's no need. Just fold them into the carrier to lie flat on the base and put your carrier bag on top of them. They lie nice and flat, don't have any sharp edges and don't present an issue at all. Overall: everything went together without issue. Some minor drilling/burring that needed cleaning but nothing more than I would normally expect. The platform is sturdy and level and I couldn't want for a better system, saving my hundreds of dollars and meaning I store one product that does 2 jobs. HIGHLY recommended. ... show more

  • Cleverly designed combo rack- good cargo hauler and great bike rack
This is a robust, well put-together rack that is cleverly designed to be a good bike rack or cargo rack. It can handle a heavy load and has plenty of places to tie down cargo. The bike holders work well and the simple velcro straps hold the tires in the baskets and tie down straps are provided to secure the bikes. The rack mount hole and hitch tube are long enough to space the bikes away from the back of the vehicle to prevent scratches and dents, but extra holes allowing closer spacing would be welcome when carrying loads that are not a hazard to your car paint. Assembly: This took about an hour to assemble. I laid the parts out on a table which made it easier to work with. The instructions are not very good and the exploded assembly diagram was so tiny you need a magnifying glass to see how the parts go together, but if you look at the diagram and the parts, you can get a good idea of how to assemble. I had a power socket driver, which really helped assemble the locking nuts and get them nice and tight. I didn't tighten down everything until the end, when I took it off the table and placed it upside down on the floor to get the two halves nice and flat, then finished tightening everything. Oopsies: I only had one problem, which was one of the bike tire baskets was the wrong part. There are regular and offset tire baskets, three regular and one offset on either side. I had only one offset basket and an extra regular basket. A quick trim with a hacksaw turned the regular basket into an offset basket to finish assembly. This product could be improved if the load tray had the ability to fold up and lock, making it easier and safer to leave on the car when not being used to carry a load. I've seen this feature on similar products but they tended to cost twice as much, so the convenience comes with a price. ... show more
