When I ordered this concert ukulele, Tom was a new brand for me. I've now played this uke (AM1-C), plus the TOM AM5-T (26" Solid Mahogany Tenor Ukulele) and the TOM AM-C-BK (23" Carbon Fiber Concert Ukulele). I don't know what the designation "AM" stands for. The carbon fiber model had a serious design flaw, but both the AM1-C and the AM5-T were fun to play. As with other new ukes, the strings took about 3 days to stretch enough to not need tuning after every song. Out of the box, there was a cosmetic blemish on the back of the body, but I could rub it out. I played a variety of songs, from "Sweet Pea" to "Better Together" to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." I enjoyed the playing experience! I hope I get a chance to try one of their high-end models. I'll bet TOM knows what they are doing.

I got the 23” Concert uke model, with its gorgeous and resonant sapele wood (contrary to popular belief, you don’t NEED to have a mahogany instrument for it to be nice!). It has a very nice sound, and great playability: the string action feels good, and the response time is quick! The tuning gears are solid, and the instrument holds tune well. The travel/storage case is well-made with good padding, and the overall packaging was incredibly thoughtful and carefully protected the instrument. Now, let’s talk about these super accessories! STRAP: Mine came with the grey-and-black strap (it looks like they’re phasing in a more overtly branded “TOM” strap and it’s “dealer’s choice” at the moment as to which you’ll get, but I got the grey-and-black one, which made me happy). CAPO: The capo is tight but not impossible to squeeze – just the right amount of tension for quick application/removal, without it slipping off. PICKS AND POLISHING CLOTH: I also like that they included a polishing cloth, a few picks (because let’s face it: you always see a pick lying around when you don’t need one, but when you DO, where have they gone?!). There’s not that much one can say about a pick, other than they don’t feel like cheap/thin ones that are often “throwaways” packaged with instruments like this. OTHER EXTRAS: Haven’t needed the extra strings yet, but I’m glad that they’re there. The booklet is very detailed and good for a beginner (I’ll confess that I haven’t yet checked out their YouTube videos, but I did look at their YouTube CHANNEL, and as of this review (August 2025), there are 32 videos. So, no. You don’t have to go to Hawaii to get a solid uke. You just have to have one made by TOM and shipped to you from China via Amazon! Thanks for reading; I hope that my review helps you out!
