  • Wonderfully written, essential resource for parents
Format: Kindle
This book has been amazing. I connected with the narrative in the introduction on such a deep level that it brought me to tears (in a good way)! Aubrey Hargis's writing voice is always very empathetic and relatable. I have been following her online presence for awhile and was not disappointed when I bought this book! I have two children, ages 1 & 3. I am a former elementary school teacher, but to say that parenting has been a challenge is an understatement. I was feeling so overwhelmed with the toddler stage and reading this book felt like getting kind, thoughtful advice from a dear friend! I adore her approach to respectful discipline which honors the child while recognizing the importance of setting boundaries. If you are wanting to be more of a guide as a parent or looking for a gentler method of discipline, this book is an essential resource. It's a quick read (which I GREATLY appreciate) but offers many research-based, developmentally appropriate suggestions. Understanding each child's developmental stage, as well as what expectations are really appropriate for each age group was so helpful, quite a relief, actually. There are plenty of very practical suggestions for handling specific behaviors as well. I've been trying many of the suggestions with my own children and they really are effective. Aubrey clearly sees children for the gifts they are and I am so grateful for this book. ... show more

  • BUY THIS NOW!!!!
Format: Paperback
If you have a toddler, or will have a toddler soon, buy this NOW! This book is an excellent resource! Aubrey is quick to the point and does not mess around. A parent herself, she knows the struggles parents go through and she encourages us to empathize and see things from our child's point of view. She has a strong understanding of early childhood development and gives you tips and ideas on how to approach different challenging milestones with your child. I started reading it when my son turned 1 year old and the timing was amazing, because shortly after I started to see some tantrums coming. She helped me to see these, not as a bad thing, but as a normal thing that little people do to express the big things they are feeling when they don't really have words yet. Her perspective has helped me stay calm and approach things in a way that I believe is building strong bonds of trust with my child. This book is organized in chapters by age 1-4 so it is very easy to find what you need and it is a quick read. I find myself going back and reading certain sections more than once. You won't regret buying this book and you may find yourself ordering one for a friend! ... show more

  • Not what I was looking for
Format: Paperback
Not a huge fan of their disciplines for one year olds. I feel like it’s not disciplines but more how to avoid having to discipline them in the first place. Like I want to know what to do with my child after I’ve had enough. I’d rather not spank and want alternatives. This doesn’t have many

  • Parenting Toolbox Must Have!
Format: Kindle
Toddler Discipline for Every Age and Stage is hands down the best parenting book I’ve read to date. It is a gold mine of information and helpful suggestions for navigating frustrating and tough parenting situations, all while clearly pointing out my toddler’s developmental capability during those situations. This book has given me the tools to diffuse and even stop tantrums before they begin by enabling me to view my toddler’s behavior to certain situations through his eyes and evaluate why the behavior is occurring in the first place. I love that the book is extremely easy to navigate and Aubrey has real life practical suggestions for every type of situation: tantrums, sleeping, toilet learning, mealtimes, non-compliance, etc. Each age section begins with an overview of what that age child is capable of developmentally, along with limitations, before moving onto strategies for age-appropriate disciple and then highlighting common issues parents face during this age. As a parent to a one and three year old in the midst of navigating toddlerhood I highly recommend this book, I’m extremely grateful it now resides in my parenting toolbox! ... show more

  • Practical and Effective Gentle Parenting Advice
Format: Paperback
This book is laser-targeted at my needs and is the kind of book I have been waiting for! There are dozens of gentle discipline books out there, but often they are lengthy and more theoretical than practical. Here, Aubrey Hargis manages to share an approach that is respectful of the child AND the parent in a way that is straightforward and practical. We started applying suggestions Aubrey offered immediately and to great effect. The format of the book makes it easy to review the section most pertinent to the reader. I love the boxed insights and hands on messages from parents. I received a review copy of this book but loved it so much I purchased my own copy, as well. ... show more

  • Good read, not the best
Format: Paperback
Had a few good "eye-openers" for me, being a first time mom. However, I couldn't help feeling as if the general theme on discipline was very unrealistic. It was too goody-goody and "in a perfect world" sort of feeling. I wanted something more relatable and helpful.

  • Like A Toddler Field Manual
Format: Paperback
Excellent resource. I have grown so, so tired of overly-wordy parenting books filled with fluff, filler, and pointless stories meant to illustrate. This book cuts right to the chase, and tells you what to expect from your growing child, and how to best handle it. Boom. Done and done. Children are the most challenging of all puzzles. They are not little adults. They are something entirely different. Little beings, like sponges, experiencing so much new information and having so many new feelings and emotions. They are not calculating or bad. Most of their acting out has to do with their growth and is not because they are intentionally misbehaving. This book does an excellent job reminding parents about that. ... show more
