  • The Tamron 17-70 F2.8 for Fuji - the lens to get for older Fuji camera bodies that lack IS
Prior to purchasing this lens for my older (non IBIS) Fuji cameras, I was using a variety of older Fuji lens-based IS models. However, I needed more reach without the possibility of compromising image quality. After much research, I settled on this Tamron 17-70 F2.8 zoom lens for Fuji mount. Now, obviously, there are a variety of reviews out there - whether in print or videos on YouTube, and that's where I did my research. When the lens arrived, what I found when I opened the box was a well-made lens that had some heft (but not overly so). On top of that - IQ-wise - it turned out to be quite a sharp optic for the focal range it covers. This 17-70 uses the standard 67 MM filter diameter and comes with a lens hood that can be screwed on in reverse for storage purposes. My copy came with firmware version 2.1 - which, from what I could glean from the Tamron website, is their latest FW version for this lens. When I looked at the appearance, build quality, constant F2.8 aperture, and image quality of this superior optic, I was surprised that it didn't cost substantially more than $699 USD and getting it off of Amazon became a quick scenario as it was shipped the very next day. As in anything you purchase, there are a majority of positives, and perhaps a quirk or two. The quirk in my case involves a constant clicking noise. For example, on my Fuji X-T2 with the 17-70 attached, when I turn it on (whether IS is set to OFF or ON), there is a constant clicking noise, giving you the impression (whether rightly or wrongly so) that the lens is constantly autofocusing. So I checked my camera menu to find that IS was set to OFF, and my autofocus was set to Singular (S). The only time it didn't make that clicking noise was if I had it set to Manual (M) focus mode - now, go figure. Apparently, checking on various Fuji photo forums, this is a normal scenario. Appearance-wise, the lens appears rather long - more like a 70-200 lens would look and feel like. Thus, it can feel a bit front heavy on a normal camera body, but that's fine because when holding a camera, you tend to hold the lens with your left hand and camera body with the right hand (for those of us who are right-handed, that is). I found the lens to be quick focusing, sporting excellent lens-based IS capabilities - comparable to a good 5-6 stop IBIS in more modern cameras. In addition, I shoot only in RAW camera file mode, and converting images taken with this 17-70 optic using Adobe Camera RAW, you can see and note the difference in improved sharpness and detail qualities, across the frame, which is commendable. So yes, based on price, build quality, and IQ results, I can't help but give it 5 stars. I would suggest anyone that has the older (non IS-based) Fuji camera bodies (i.e. X-T1 through to the XT3, X-T10 through to the X-T30, X-Pro, and X-E series), this lens is a solid no-brainer that adds superb IS capabilities coupled with excellent IQ. ... show more

  • Good, but a little over-hyped.
Loved the zoom range and f/2.8 aperture, but the sharpness wasn't great on my X-H2. It's a good lens for general photography, but falls short of the hype. I sold it and replaced it with the Fuji 16-55mm f/2.8 II. I miss the extra range, but I'm much happier with the image quality.

  • A few optical issues but solid lens none the less!
The versatility of this lens is invaluable. Such a great focal range (25.5-105mm full frame) at a constant f2.8 aperture is wonderful to have. Comparing this to Fujifilm’s own 16-55mm f2.8 you sacrifice a teeny tiny little bit on the wide end and gain a considerable amount of reach on the long end. The fact this lens has VC and there is no image stabilization on Fujifilm’s most comparable lens, I’d take the Tamron each and every time. Issues: In my experience; Capture One does not have a lens profile for this lens so upon importing my RAWs are completely uncorrected. Heavy vignetting and quite noticeable barrel & pin cushion distortion are present. However, using Lightroom it seems that the built in profile is applied automatically and looks very good with no need to correct for distortion/vignetting. Pros: Very sharp throughout the focal range. Lets in a good amount of light thanks to that constant f2.8 aperture. Convenient, all in one lens solution. Image stabilization. Weather resistant. Reasonable at $799. Personal preference here, but, attractive minimalist design. A lot of good things to say about this lens. Glad I have it pretty much permanently attached to my X-T3. ... show more

  • Defective Mechanics Upon Arrival
The lens arrived in original packaging and seemed to be in good condition. Upon mounting the lens, it made a terrible screeching noise, but as my first lens for this camera, I thought it could be a normal sound as the auto focus mechanics adjusted. It never shut off and although the lens still worked when in use, the noise was a clear indication that something was wrong. I contacted Tamron and was told that additional payments may be required of me depending on their diagnosis and necessary repairs. I now have a $700 lens with a serious mechanical issue that the company is currently gouging me for additional money to receive help despite having shipped me a broken lens. Very frustrated and disappointed as I was excited for this lens and I now have nothing to use for my camera and have wasted $700. ... show more

  • One lens to rule them all
The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 for Fuji X is an excellent value, offering great sharpness, fast autofocus, and built-in stabilization—all in a compact, weather-sealed package. While it lacks an aperture ring and the edge sharpness could be slightly better at 70mm, these are minor trade-offs for what you get at this price point. If you’re looking for a versatile, do-it-all zoom lens, this is one of the best third-party options for Fuji shooters. Pros: • Sharp and versatile 17-70mm range • Constant f/2.8 aperture • Built-in stabilization (VC) • Weather-sealed design • Good autofocus performance Cons: • No aperture ring • Some distortion and vignetting at wide angles • Edge sharpness could be better at 70mm • Size and weight may be a consideration for those prioritizing portability ... show more
