Description

The Steelcase Series 1 chair has a LiveBack flexor system in the backrest which conforms to your body and moves with you to support the spine as you change postures. The tilt mechanism is synchronized; the seat and back work in harmony with each other, keeping the body securely supported in the chair and feet firmly planted on the floor so you can recline without leaving your optimal zone for seeing and reaching your work. This model includes an adjustable seat depth, fully adjustable arms (raise up and down, pivot in and out, shift forward and back and side to side), adjustable lumbar, pneumatic seat height adjustment, recline tension adjustment (weight activated with adjustment and lock), flexing back with mesh upholstery, upholstered seat and wheels for hard flooring. The seat features strong yet pliable foam which conforms to the body and creates pressure-free comfort. Flexible seat edge offers a bit of bend, right where you need it – relieving pressure points under your thighs. This chair will arrive unassembled and require some assembly; covered by Steelcase warranty.

My old chair recently broke due to a guest being rough with it. I had cheaped out on it, when I needed a home office chair, and got it for about $200. I figured it was good enough, but I wasn't pleased with its fragility. So, this time around, I bought the Steelcase Series 1 chair. And I love my new Steelcase chair. It's so comfortable compared to my older chair, which I had _thought_ was comfortable simply because I'd adjusted to its flaws over time. In comparison to my older chair, the support in the Steelcase chair I just bought feels crazy good. I'm a petite woman so I can't say how it is for taller people but, for me, it's friggin' perfect. I think the Malt color's pretty nice, too. I live in a place with tan carpet and white walls. The Malt color blends in with my wall a little bit, which makes the space look more open. My old chair was entirely black. The visual improvement's noticeable, and it's a bit of a mood boost for my home's workspace. ... show more

We bought two of these for our home office. We were lucky to get 2 years from the cheap Costco or Office chain chairs. They have a seat bottom that slides in and out, a must for us. Pros: Ease of assembly, seating position, quality materials, good fit and finish, great casters. Cons: Edges of back are hard for a larger guy (6'3", 243#). I wish they had more lumbar and back tension I have back issues, so I added a small cushion wedged between the lumbar strap and the seat back. We added a cushion to the back of the other chair to alleviate side pressure. They definitely promote better seating posture. ... show more

This chair is super great. If you actually go out of your way to try and sit up straight, this chair is very comfortable and you can set the arm rests to fit basically any position. If you slouch and lean, your back and neck will hurt at the end of day. But if I sit up straight, I find this chair to be very comfortable and supportive. I'm 6 feet tall and 220 pounds, not exactly a small guy, but the seat is plenty cushioned for me and the back rest is juuuuuuust tall enough. ... show more

    • Two GLARING issues

I've had this chair since January 2023. I use it in my home office. I'm also a PC gamer so I will sit in it for hours at a time. For all the hype and expense of this Steelcase chair, I really expected better. I really don't like that you can only lock the back of the chair in the full upright position. The far more inexpensive chair I purchased for my office at work has the ability to lock fully upright, semi-reclined or fully reclined. I appreciate the the armrests on the Series 1 are adjustable but the fact they do not lock into place makes no sense either. Also, they are NOT comfortable. I'm constantly repositioning them because my elbow gets so sore. When you game, your hand is on the mouse constantly and that means your elbow is also on the armrest for extended periods of time. I am now on the hunt for gel pads for the armrests on my $500+ office chair. Unacceptable. I also bought a $75 Steelcase head rest. Took forever to get to me and only supports my head if I lean WAY back. Only adjusts up and down, not back and forth. What I do like: The chair moves and rolls around like butter. The seat and lower back support ARE good. Like I said I game for hours and rarely get up feeling stiff or sore (I have my feet elevated). Overall, I would not recommend this chair for the price. No idea if paying over $1,000 for Steelcase's upper end chairs would be worth it either. ... show more

I love this chair except for the armrests, which swivel and there is no way to lock them in place. It’s a terrible design flaw in my opinion. Love the hard floor casters.     • Probably the easiest desk chair that I've ever assembled.

There is beauty in the simplicity of this chair. Sure, you don't have a million dials and switches on the base for fine tuning, but it hits all the basics and while I initially was taken back by the fact that it only has 3 settings for the backrest support (rigid, firm and soft), I have found that's all that I really need. I should note that mine arrived with more of the assembly done than the Steelcase videos even indicated. For instance, the armrests were already installed and I didn't have to attach the back to the base. Made me wonder if mine was a return, demo or something like that but it appears to be in like new condition. Anyway, I had it all together and adjusted to my liking in all of 5 min. which is great! I feel like this chair corrects a lot of my bad habits w/out being a nag about it. I find myself sitting with improved posture and with proper support at the three key touch points- Arms, back, butt. I would say that if there is a weak link among those three, it'd maybe be at the arms as they sort of vaguely move around laterally sometimes and I find myself sort of resetting them every so often to where I think they should be for me. They also are fairly thin and lightweight so I have some concern about durability but only time will tell there. Steelcase claims the chair can support up to 400lbs, which to me, indicates that it should hold up under the kind heavy daily use that I bought it for as an intensive home office user. Some complaints in reviews I read ahead of purchase were related to the seat cushion being too hard. I would tend to disagree there as I think it strikes a perfect balance of comfort/supportiveness. As with a bed mattress, softer isn't always better in my experience. As for the rest, it feels like an upscale economy chair rather than anything more luxurious with lots of plastic but it's all well-done. I guess for the price paid, that's fair and my wife indicated that she prefers this to any other desk chair that I've brought home thus far. I'd say that's high praise. I think that unless you are willing to go closer to a grand or more, this is a great option- Particularly if you are under 6' tall. If you are larger, you will likely want to add the optional headrest for additional support as the chair back covers me at 5'10" just barely. Otherwise, maybe steer clear of this one, but for the average size adult, it really shines. ... show more
