  • good plane!
First, the minus one: lever cap is aluminium, not a solid aluminium, but a hollow one. I still give it 5 stars, because it still not proven that it is not durable. As long as it is not overtighten, I guess everything will be ok. Another minus is the norris adjuster, sloppy. Wanna fix it? A little MacGyver things can do the trick. Use a seal tape one usually use it to seal the pipes on plumbing job. Apply on the pin that hold the hole on the blade. Problem solved. Still sloppy? Use the tape again, this time, apply on the pin that attached to the plane's body. Done? How is it now? I guess it will perform like LN or V brand! The depth adjuster is loose? No problem, apply the same tape, the same MacGyver thing along the metal Thread. Now the adjuster feel snug and not to become loose easily. Besides the minus things, what I have got here is a masterpiece! Made of a ductile cast iron, it won't crack easily, even you drop it from your work bench. The blade is A2 steel, very thick, like low angle plane blades, very strong, sharp out of the box. But you still need to polish it. I think no need to touch up the plane bed. I believe it flat enough. Still need 30 minutes top for lapping the sole. This plane is really a new animal. It combines the best features from bevel down planes with the best features from bevel up/ low angle planes. Among others, it has adjustable mouth. Although it does not have stopper like V brand, it won't slamed your blade and incidentally destroy the edge. Fixed bed for stability, nice cap iron, ready to use, flat style, not humpback, norris adjuster. Too bad, once again, stanley made it half hearted caused this plane suffered from several flaws. With better QC, and better accuracy on norris style adjuster, this plane will be unbeatable! ... show more

  • Best bang for the buck
My plane arrived with a flat sole and boy was I happy. I have done my fair share of flattening in my life and the less I do, the more life I live. The design of the plane was impressive. I like the Norris controls but it has a lot of free play which is the only bad point in the whole plane. However, to be able to control the angle and depth with just on control makes the free play moot. The A2 blade was sharp but I didn't paper thin shavings until I honed the blade. But this was easy with a good japanese waterstone. Some more expensive planes don't even tell you what the composition of the blade is. A2 is an excellent blade metal that will last a long time. I have used the old Stanley planes and I will say that although I liked those, the new design is so much less bulk. I have done some board, and cutting board flattening with the plane and it was easy. Getting paper thin shaving is so therapeutic that maybe I will just use this to meditate with. Life is short and you don't want to waste your time doing inefficient things like trying to get a cheap plane to work. Get this Stanley. ... show more

  • A good plane at a good price
The best thing about this plane out of the box is that the blade is really sharp and ready to use. The first thing I noticed about it was how long and heavy it is. I have an old Stanley #4 and I bought this one, not to replace it, but more to see how different it is. The casting on this one is much thicker. At first I felt a bit disappointed when I took off the lever cap and found that it;s made of aluminum, but since aluminum is more expensive than steel I'm guessing they went with it to save weight. It feels light and flimsy when you have it off, but it works fine. Now, if you want it to be usable, the first thing you have to do is void the warranty. The cap iron has a little flat on the front of it, which you will need to file down. I also filed all the sharp edges of the casting. And boy are they sharp. If you don't have a file, buy one along with this plane. I thought the handle felt a bit chunky and I didn't really like the finish on it so I scraped and sanded it off, sanded it up to 220, rounding off the corners a bit, and put a couple thin coats of shellac on it. I might put some oil varnish on it later. I tend to refinish the wooden parts (or replace plastic parts with wood) of all my tools as soon as I get them, so you might not feel the need. The front knob doesn't fit in my hand as well as the one on my old #4, but I dunno if there's much I can do about that. It feels short and stubby. So far I've only tested it on a piece of 2x4, but it worked very well in some difficult grain with knots with almost no tear-out. The adjustable mouth works very well at controlling tear-out, though tightening down the knob does tend to close the mouth a little, so be careful of that. I didn't really look at the instructions before I started because, y'know, it's a plane, I think I can figure it out. Well, at first I didn't know what the lateral adjustment lock screw was for and I left it loose. It goes out of skew really easily if you don't lock it down. I found the best way to laterally adjust the blade accurately is to tap on the knob with a block of wood. I thought the depth adjustment was not as fine as on the old #4; It took a few tries to get a really fine shaving (the thinnest I got was .002", which is thinner than most paper, so that's pretty good). After planing, the wood was dead smooth and if it were a table top you could just put a finish on it and be done. I've never used a Lie-Nielsen or a Veritas plane so I can't compare it to those, but it is a very solid plane once you do a little work on it. I'm not going to get rid of my old #4 or put it on a shelf, I'll just welcome the new one into the shop and let them work side by side. ... show more

  • Ergonomic, predictable, easy to adjust, pretty
After some negative experiences with high-maintenance and hard-to-adjust planes in my early days of DIY projects, I started to avoid such tools altogether; I'd often much rather spend 30 minutes with a sander than reach for one. But this hand plane changed everything. It's a lovingly crafted, all-around design. It's bulky enough to be useful even for large projects, but very ergonomic, gliding effortlessly at just about any angle and in any direction. It produces very predictable results and actually makes the whole process fun. It's also very easy to adjust, with intuitive, locking knobs for mouth size, blade depth, and lateral adjustment. Takes maybe 2 minutes to set up, and then works like a charm with soft and hard woods alike. Oh - and it looks very pretty, too! ... show more
