The base is made of very hard wood that was flat. The mouth on mine didn't need any work. The iron needed sharpening, and that's hard to do something this small; it's less than 2 inches long. After that, it worked great. It holds its edge well. Once set, the blade holds its position, although it's easy to get a finger on top of the iron as you're working. I was a little skeptical about this. I needed a small plane to help shape braces on a guitar project. This thing blew me out of the water, I am really pleased with the overall quality and construction. All I had to do was sharpen the blade a little and It was off to the races. I was most pleasantly surprised by this, the plane manages to have good heft and not feel anything like the other planes in this category (most would better be in the toys category, but not this one. I rarely leave reviews but this deal is nearly unbelievable and is worthy of a glowing review. This plane is better than others I've used which were 10x the price, an amazing value! This is most definitely not a toy and is of shockingly good quality from feel to operation and adjustment. I liked the quality of this so much that I purchased a spare a week after purchasing the first one so I have one to use in case something happens to the other. My main go-to plane for small projects especially ale modeling and smaller woodworking like luthier precision jobs. It works great for balsa wood, basswood and pine. It is very small. Good for small parts. I use it for RC airplanes. Hard woods or any "around the house" carpenter project: this planer is probably useless.

This is a nice, sharp little planer. But know that it is very small. The 3.5 inches refers to the length of the tool, not the width of the blade.

    • After some work on the blade, it works well enough
I got this to even and level the edges on leather projects. Perfect size for it. Build quality is nice, with smooth wood and good fitment of metal. The blade out of the box wasn't sharp enough to cut the leather nicely. 15 minutes on various grits of sandpaper and stropping and it was much better.
