So these aren't terrible by any means. It just depends on what you're looking to do with them to see if they'll suit your needs. I bought them after deciding to make some spoons/spatulas/etc. with some of my "scrap" material laying around my shop. The blades are sufficiently sharp and seem to be of a pretty good tool steel quality. Wouldn't call it high end tool steel but they'll work right out of the package for a lot of rough carpentry. The bases are painted and if you decide to use the tools right away then you'll notice some of the paint wearing off onto your work. I'd recommend taking these apart first and getting the paint off the working surface. Use some spray adhesive on the back of 400 or 600 grit sandpaper and stick it to a flat surface. Then run the tool across the paper until you flatten the tool and remove the paint on the working surface. Apply some good wax to the tool and put it back together. (Might as well be sure the blade has a good edge while you're at it) These will work with a little love, they're good to learn on. Check out Paul Sellers on Youtube for some guidance to setting them up ... show more

  • It's not terrible.
I didn't have huge expectations, and this is more or less meeting them. I purchased these on more of a whim than for a specific need or project. Biggest issue is the black enamel which rubs right off on the work piece. I was just testing it on a spare 2x4, and it rubs off like a crayon. Blade was reasonably sharp out of the package, and the build quality is what I expected. The mouth isn't well formed and it's a bit fiddly to set up. I think I am probably going to keep it. If I do, I will grind down the bottom and flatten it like I would with a hand plane. That should remove the black paint and clean up the mouth. ... show more

  • Cheap But Effective
These are probably tool steel blades and casting for the body. Both of which are done as well or better than you would expect at this price. My package included the file/rasp which really made the price unbelievable. However, adjusting these if very, very fiddly and if you are not familiar with using a spoke shave it may frustrate you to the point of giving up. But don't, if you stick with it you will eventually figure it out. Keep mind on where the cutting blade is at all times when adjusting though because the design requires flipping over several times to check the blade alignment. The blades are "sharp" out of the box but depending on your desires and ability they need tuning up. The sole or bottom of the shave is not dead flat and needs to be lapped on a flat plate, the blades need to be honed on fine stone or diamond plate and stropped. After doing this these very cheap shaves work very well. I'm pretty happy with mine. ... show more

  • Require a huge amount of setup.
When I buy a new tool with a blade, I expect 3ro need to sharpen it before use. I don't normally have to finish the manufacturing process. A spokeshave is a specialized hand plane and should be set up and treated as such. I was surprised to see the shoe with the rough cast marks as well as being painted (I knew it would be painted, it's the roughness and the pits that surprised me). It's kinda counterproductive to have a rough surface behind the blade, it will dog up the nicee cuts you've made. I decided to keep them because with a little TLC and a lot of elbow grease, plus I love a challenge. I think they'll make solid tools. The picture on the left is the before, on the right is after around 3 hours of flattening the shoe. Now on ro the smaller spokeshave, then the blades. And the blades look like they just came off a bench grinder, they wouldn't cut hot butter without a complete sharpening. If you don't mind finishing the manufacturing process, or you are only going to be doing rough work, I'm pretty sure they'll do the job. ... show more

  • Be ready to work on it
I have learned a lot since buying this set. When others say it is dull....yep! If you want to use it, be ready to sharpen the blade. Watch a couple videos to be ready to do the sharpening. If you are going to jump right in a project be ready to learn some hidden features of grain. I am lucky in that I have time for most things. One thing I don't know that I have heard mentioned is that the sole of the spoke shave is rough. Paint can't hide everything. I would advise you to inspect yours and if poorly formed be ready to do some re-forming or send it back. As far as good about this item, it seems strong, it is similar to most others in function, it is much less expensive than many, and the others may the same short comings. ... show more

  • Not worth the price.
Like others have stated, they need work before use. Mine had casting slang left where the blade sets that needed removed, blade needed sharpening and bottom of shave is rough from casting and paint. Took a couple hours to file and sand the tool handle for blade fit plus sharpening the blade.

  • Good value. Nice collection of tools/replacement parts in 1 purchase.
They are very good for DIY-ers to start playing with thickness of wood. Very good value of 2 sets of 3 blades for 2 sizes of shavers. And the extra 4 way file is a very valuable tool too.
