  • I changed my mind!
I CHANGED MY MIND! I originally gave this 2 stars because it lacks a depth adjustment. But since then I have studied a lot about using hand tools, and I learned about using a mallet or small hammer to adjust the depth on wood-body hand planes. That technique works perfectly here (at least for extending and straightening the blade with taps to the back of the iron)! I can dial this in to take a VERY fine cut and it works beautifully. The blade holds an edge reasonably well and I use it all the time. My favorite use so far is to clean the machining (jointer, planer, or table saw) marks off of the edge of a board. I've used it particularly for my homemade edge banding for plywood. I just set the depth of cut to barely take a paper-thin shaving and I can use this like an eraser to wipe away the little burn marks and ripples from the saw blade. I love it! That said, perhaps the 12-220 model is still a better choice. But I haven't used that, so I can't say for sure. But for the price I will happily give this 5 stars. Original review follows, just for reference: ------------------------------------------------ I was just getting into hand planes and decided to order a basic block plane to get me started. I saw this and the 12-220 and to my uneducated eyes they seemed to be basically the same thing. So I ordered this one as it was about $5 cheaper. BIG mistake. The 12-220 has a depth adjustment knob. This one doesn't. You have to loosen the blade/iron tension knob and manually set both the depth and angle, then tighten it again without messing up that adjustment. Spend the extra few bucks (actually as I'm writing this they are now the same price, within pennies) and get the better one. The sole needed to be flattened and the iron needed to be sharpened, but that should always be expected at this price. ... show more

  • Takes some time to fine tune
Just started wood working a few months ago and wanted a simple hand plane to play with. This doesn't have lateral or mouth adjustment and is probably as simple as hand planes come. However it is of solid construction. Out of the package the sole is FAR from flat. It took about 3 hours of sanding to get it flat and remove the milling marks. I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for. But hey, $17 and a few spare hours of work is not bad by any means. I'm sure that it will last quite a long time. After honing the blade razor sharp it produces some good ribbons. I have yet to see how well the blade holds an edge but after market blades seem easy to come by. ... show more

  • Can't beat it for the price...
Very happy, this is a great plane for an awesome price. I sharpened the blade with a cheap sharpening stone, then adjusted the blade in the base until it was taking the desired cut depth, and then I shaved a rubbing spot on an interior door with no problem. Nice even shavings, easy to use, couldn't be happier. Was worried it wouldn't work well since the price was so low, but this thing rocks. This is my first time using a hand plane (just watched some youtube videos for tips) and couldn't be happier. ... show more

  • Simple and effective
Pretty much exactly what it shows on the tin, except that mine was spraypainted red instead of that purple-ish color in the photo. Even better, in my mind. Can be used to put down a decent surface straight out of the box, but I recommend giving the blade a little attention if you can; the machine-ground edge might not be perfectly square or even. ... show more

  • I broke this almost immediately
I am not a carpenter. Let this be a disclaimer...so I get this thing, see something about a depth adjustment screw, go to turn it, and the next thing I know, the blade has fallen out, and the whole assembly basically disintegrates in my hands. I finally managed to get it functional again, but sweet zombie jesus this thing is impossible to use. Unless, maybe if you're some kind of wood wizard or into lumber legerdemain. Ok, that was terrible, apologies. Don't buy this, just get a quality plane. ... show more

  • Not amazing, but if you don't need it much, it gets the job done
I had to plane off the lip of a countertop that hung too far down for a dishwasher. This got the job done without much hassle. I'd rather use my plug-in power planar any day of the week, but there wasn't enough room without removing the whole dishwasher. However, if you're trying to do some serious woodworking, I would spend the money on a better tool. Not to say that this tool feels cheaply made -- it's pretty solid metal. Just that I don't expect it to be as versatile as some of the better ones out there. But, at this price, I can't complain. Probably perfect for an occasional use, such as maybe a door that sticks. ... show more

  • Needs some work out of the box
The iron is plastic coated and the plane is coated in protective oil. No rust on anything when I got it. I sanded the bottom for about 45 minutes and still didn't get it completely flat. The sides were square to the bottom, but weren't flat enough to use smoothly without a lot of sanding. Blade steel is good and holds an edge well. The iron's bevel was straight and consistent so it was easy to sharpen. It's the quality I expected for the price. ... show more

  • How to USE and Set Up Very Important
I received mine today and it was Red , not a Problem . Was surprised that it was all Cast Iron , shows me Quality . I do believe that it would cut right out of the Box . I like my Tools to be Oil free as not to Contaminate the Wood when using . After I cleaned it with Denatured Alcohol I used it on a Ceramic Stone just to fine tune it . Put it together adjusted it and used it on Walnut Wood . I think they call the sound of the Cut as ( Singing ) , and it did . I am an 88 yr. Old Wood Carver and now doing a few canes from Walnut , this little Plane does the Job. This Little Plane is NOT for Planing Doors , it's for Small Work , like breaking Edges and Narrow Pieces . After reading the Reviews I was expecting a Plane that I was going to need to return , not necessary . Read , Follow and Understand the Instruction . " Happy Woodcarver" ... show more
