  • Needs major work
Size: Smooth Plane 2.3/8 Inch
Sole is no where near flat, probably an hour or more to flatten. Surfaces was pretty bad, a brick is smoother than the metal in it. Blade is ok not good but works, probably will buy a thicker iron and chip breaker in future. Save your money for an antique

  • Perfect for what it is.
Size: Smooth Plane 2.3/8 Inch
I'm not writing this and comparing it to a Lie-Neilsen or Veritas because if you're trying to, you live in a fantasy world. There's a reason why this is less than a third of the cost. Even the pre-WWII version had to be fettled and finished to your working specifications. At the price point, which is what's important here, these planes are fantastic. You may have to flatten the sole, you will have to lap it no matter the maker without spending $250 or more... Adjust the frog to your liking, flatten the back of the blade, hone the iron. So many people complain about the iron not being razor sharp from the factory yet even Lie-Neilsen, you still have to hone the iron... This isn't a new thing. Learn to true up your tools and properly sharpen your irons because you're going to have to do it regularly to keep it functioning properly and you'll be happy with your tools. These are skills you have to have to be a woodworker and always have been. Okay enough ranting. The casting and machining is well within acceptable tolerances and the iron is properly ground to 25 degrees. All I had to do was lap the sole, adjust the frog to smoothing tolerance, three minutes to flatten the back edge and then about four minutes to hone the cutting edge to around 30 degrees and razor sharp. All the same things I had to do to all of my other planes and I get shavings that I can put on the page of a book that I can read through. There is a decent amount of backlash in the depth adjustment but again, at the price point that's normal and acceptable. If two extra seconds of spinning a wheel with your finger are that big of a problem, remake the parts or spend a lot more money to have tighter tolerances. The only real annoyance is the "plastic" tote and knob but they are easy to replace even without a lathe. Plenty of Youtube videos show you how to make new ones from hardwood and you can either make a template from the existing tote and knob or print out templates from many sources online. The other option is to go to ebay or a few other sources and either find originals or buy from someone that makes them. I prefer to make my own so I can shape them to my hands directly. It's nice that you can order from Amazon UK now since you can't directly order the 4 1/2 in the US. Mine took about a week to arrive and was well packaged with no damage or even scratches. A good buy for a new tool and it was a lot cheaper than finding a vintage one from ebay. ... show more

  • Could be better
Size: Jointer Plane 2.3/8 Inch
The plastic knob was broken in half, so I made a new one that seems to work well. The iron doesn’t retract enough unless you grind the chip breaker back a little. The fit between the body and the frog needed some work. It’s pretty flat and it does it’s job, but I was hoping for a little more from Stanley. ... show more

  • I recommend this plane, over the Stanley No. 4, whole-heartedly!
Size: Smooth Plane 2.3/8 Inch
This plane came to me in a far more "ready to use" state than either my No. 4 or my No. 5. Maybe the difference lies in the fact that this was finished in England, vs...wherever the more common sized Stanley planes are finished. I'm not sure. I just know that the 1/2 sized Stanley planes come to you in a more finalized state. As well, it seems the depth adjustment lever is much closer to what it should be. Every whole-sized Stanley plane I've bought seems to have a more crudely cast/finished deth adjustment lever. This is kind of a big deal, actually.. Because, if it's too short (at the top) to solidly engage the chip-breaker, you'll have a LOT more play in the depth adjustment knob! In any case, I recommend this plane, over the Stanley No. 4, whole-heartedly! ... show more

  • Impressive out of the box
Size: Jointer Plane 2.3/8 Inch
It’s an impressive plane. I like the weight of it when working with it. Out of the box I did not have to flatten The soul of the plane, or sharpen the blade. After a few months, naturally I had to flatten the bottom. And after a few hours I had to sharpen the blade. But that’s all to be expected of a new plane ... show more

  • Sloppy manufacturing from a reputable company
Size: Jointer Plane 2.3/8 Inch
I gave this product a one star rating because the plane was not made correctly. The castings for the base and the frog are out of tolerance causing the plane blade to rest at a severe skew. The skew is so extreme it can only be partially corrected with the adjusting lever. The only other way to deal with this problem is to hone the blade out of square. (Not recommended) Another problem I noticed was that the adjusting screw for the frog, the one that adusts the frog forwards or backwards, was not set at a correct angle. I believe this is the case because the frog rests on top of the adjusting screw causing the frog to (wobble?) on top of the screw. This makes adjusting and setting the frog in correct alignment almost impossible. Because of the problems encountered with this product I have requested a return. I would not recommend this product to a friend, only to someone I disliked. ... show more

  • Front handle smashed, screw bent, skew handle bent.
Size: Smooth Plane 2.3/8 Inch
The box looked fine, but inside the front handle is smashed into three big and several more little pieces. The screw that held it on is bent. The handle that skews the blade is bent (twisted, not just bent to the side). The blade, blade stiffener, and blade clamp were all disassembled and in different places in the box. Because the box is OK, I have a feeling this thing was swept off the floor in pieces, and dumped into the box. ... show more
