  • Successful Starter
Style: New 19
This is such a super convenient kit with utensils you would need and step-by-step instructions with pictures. I especially like the temperature sticker that allows you to find a warm place in your kitchen, and also the band that goes around the jar that keeps track of the size of your starter and the time that you started/fed it! I would recommend this if you are just starting out. ... show more

  • A must-have for sourdough bakers
Style: New 19
My wife and I recently were given some sourdough starter by a friend in a red Solo cup, and we needed a better container to keep it in. This jar is large enough to feed your starter a few times and keep it all in. There are markings printed on the side to keep track of quantities as you feed your starter, which is helpful so you don't always need to use a measuring cup. There is a thermometer sticker you can add to the side and a nifty band that rotates to indicate the day and time you last fed your starter. The cloth top allows your starter to breathe, and a metal cap is also included in case you just want to store it in the refrigerator for a few days. The silicone spatula is awesome; it is long and narrow enough to stir the contents well, and flexible enough to wipe the inner sides of the jar. This tool is perfect for the job. If you are just getting into sourdough baking, this set is something that will make the process so much easier! ... show more

  • Nice jar for starter or levain
Style: New 20
I'm glad to have this set for making sourdough leaven. The jar itself and the bonnet are my favorite parts. What's nice about the jar over others you could use is that the sides are straight, so it makes stirring and scraping out your starter or leaven so much easier (the included long skinny spatula is handy, though it could be a couple of inches longer). I use a basic kitchen scale, but if that's not for you then it's convenient to have the measurements marked on the jar too. The bonnet fits well and is handy, in the past I've just used any random cloth and a rubber band, but this bonnet is dedicated to the task so it is always on hand now. I just hand wash it with a little natural dish soap when it needs it (it takes maybe 30 seconds) and let it air dry. As for the elastic band with the date markings, my starter is well past that stage and I just use it the way I used to use a rubber band, to keep an eye on it for when it has doubled in size. The elastic band will last a long time, whereas my rubber bands snap now and then, so it's a nice luxury I suppose. If you are just starting then perhaps it's useful for keeping track of feedings. (btw if the feeding and discarding seems like a lot once you get to the maintenance stage, and you bake only once a week or less, I highly recommend you search online for "dry sourdough starter recipe" once you get your starter mature, it's another method that I much prefer and generates much less waste/ discard.) When I ordered this set it was only around ten bucks, making it one of the most affordable kits of this type. The price fluctuates of course, now it's 15, but if you hit it just right this is a particularly good value. Sure, you can use any old clean jar and a rubber band for your starter, but as someone who has done that, I can say that this set adds to the enjoyment of the process by being tailor made for the task and nicely made. I look forward to mixing up my leaven in my special jar every week. It would make a nice gift as well. ... show more

  • Pros and cons to size, made well!
Style: New 20
This is a really great simple starter kit for sourdough! After having used a few sizes of jars, I have found there are some pros and cons to using a 24 ounce jar: it’s the perfect size to hold onto, making pouring and stirring nice and simple. It is a good size to hold discard, or to maintain a smaller amount of mature starter. However, if you are following the 100 g starter/flour/water recipe when just making starter for the first time, this is slightly small! If your starter more than doubles it might overflow the jar. That said, because your starter goes higher up the skinnier jar, it is a little easier to see what’s going on with it than in a 35 ounce jar! I do find that the skinner jar is a little more difficult to stir the starter in simply because I can’t see what’s going on and stir at the same time. It is big enough to stir in though, so it is completely adequate for making a starter! The glass jar itself is made well, and the markings are clear and easy to read. I like the pretty design on the fed time line! The cloth cover, lid, thermometer and spatula this comes with work great. The thermometer is a little long - it’s just a standard size for most of these kits - so I would suggest putting it up as high on the jar as it can go because at the bottom where the jar curves the sticker puckers a bit. I’m a little worried about how well it will stick when washed, but the thermometer itself works well to show room temperature! The colors are easy to read. The band fits well, but doesn’t grip much, which is good because you can move it to the time easily without having to move the jar. I haven’t had issues with it sliding down at all, but it is slightly easier to bump out of place. The stick spatula works great to stir, but you want to get ahold of a small flat spatula as well to help scrape down the sides, because I find that the stick ones just don’t do the job well! Overall, this is a fantastic and well made kit, and has just about everything you need to get started on making a starter. There are pros and cons to buying a smaller jar size, but that is up to the baker! ... show more
