  • Amazing!!!
Style: HT-A9 only
At first, I was going to give this a four star rating because I was having connectivity issues but after some trial and error and experimenting I finally found a way of setting it up, so so that there are very little to no connectivity issues. (in case anyone with this system is interested once I plugged the LAN cable directly into the box all of the cutting out) Once I got that out of the way, the sound quality is absolutely unbelievable! It’s not just loud, but the clarity and different layers of sound that you can hear out of the speakers are unlike anything I’ve ever heard before! The only thing that could compare is the theater, the room I have my set up in is about 20 x 20 with flat walls in the acoustics are unbelievable so I would say it’s even better than the theater. True home theater surround sound! I got the better subwoofer that they recommend and there is truly more sound and base that could come out of the speakers that I would want. The maximum I’ve ever turned it up to us about 67 out of 100. It just blows my mind that they could go so loud. I do not have the use of a center speaker, so I was worried about voice clarity not coming through. Just the speakers by themselves do not need a center speaker at all, no matter what the volume is the voice clarity of any show, sports, or movie is perfectly very easy to hear. My last sound bar sounded great, but I cannot make out the voices unless I had subtitles which is very inconvenient. The only other thing I could possibly think of as a negative is the fact that you cannot control the volume of each speaker individually, which really is unnecessary if you’re sitting directly in the center of the room. But I am not sitting in the center of the room, my is just slightly to the left of center and there are some adjustments that you can make, but I can’t quite get it just right. Maybe with some updates down the road that might be a possibility but for now it’s still MUCH MUCH better than any sound bar or home theater surroundsound system I’ve ever owned, and I’ve owned several of the top-of-the-line home theater, surround sound systems, and nothing even comes close!!! ... show more

  • The future of home theater but not there yet.
Style: HT-A9 with SA-SW5 Wireless Subwoofer
I have an AV receiver and still wanted to avoid running wires for my surround sound so I gave this a try. After a lot of diligence. I must say, the audio quality is amazing. However, even with the upgraded Sony subwoofer, the low end is quite lacking. Very lacking actually! The calibration process is as easy as it gets. Something that Sony has consistently led on. I really like the style of these units, and outside of some initial dropouts, I really haven't had any issues with it. However, one of the main deal breakers to me was the fact that it did not possess 120Hz 4K through via its hub. That means that if you were planning on playing any console gaming, you will drastically sacrifice graphical performance for this. Really a shame that they are forcing you to utilize their hub but won't provide you with the latest technology in it. Something like this is ideal for renters who live in apartments that are lacking wiring and want to take their audio with them as they move around. If you own your place, invest a little bit on the wiring and don't look back. Wireless technology is getting there, but we are still some years out. Also, have you receivers are now integrating with some of these wireless systems which will make such system obsolete. ... show more

  • Review from a user who owns the Sonos 5.1 (Arc + Sub + 2x One) system
Style: HT-A9 only
I bought the Sony HT-A9 to replace my Sonos 5.1 system (Arc + Sub 2x One). During my comparison, I turned off the Sonos Sub as I don't have it the Sony Sub to compare it with. The HT-A9 was touted as to have a great 360 immersive experience for watching Dolby Atmos content. My living room is a 20' ceiling so I wondered if the HT-A9 would provide a better immersive experience than the Sonos system. And indeed, the HT-A9 really gives me that. On the Sonos, I would have to crank up high to hear it to some degree but it's also not as immersive where I can sometimes tell the effects are coming from either the left or right surround speakers. While the HT-A9 speakers are smaller than most bookshelf speakers, I still think that the Sonos Arc aesthetically looks, and seems to blend in, better in a living room (non-theater room) setup. The HT-A9 speakers next to my 65-inch TV seems big. I also don't have a cabinet under the TV, so mounting the HT-A9 speakers on the wall can be a bit of an issue. I would have to figure out how to hide the power cable wires. With the Sonos Arc, there are cable management kits that you can use for it. The phantom speaker channel was convincing if I sit somewhere in the middle of the room. If I sit either right or left of my couch, I can definitely start to hear the dialogues on one side. Maybe it's just me because I'm used to having a dedicated center channel. I think if you have an L-shaped couch where you would sit far towards one side of the room, you will start to hear the dialogue coming from the speaker closest to you. For music listening, this is not an issue -- actually I find the soundstage is better. It was a breeze when I first setup the HT-A9. I immediately watched Dune on it. Half-way through the movie, I started to hear some crackling sound from the right-rear speaker. Having watch the movie with the Sonos, I thought that was some sound effect I just never heard before. Apparently, the right-rear speaker was having connectivity issues. After manually linking it, it reconnected without a problem. With the manual linking process though, you would have to press the link button on all four speakers. I finished the movie without having that issue again. The next day, I then played some music to find out that the rear-right speaker disconnected again and so I followed the same steps. Later that day, the same speaker disconnected again. This time, I set the audio quality to Connection priority. I thought that fixed it. Unfortunately, it happen again for the fourth time. It could be that I'm just getting a defective product but this gave me a pause.... if one of these speakers break in the future, how easy is it to get a replacement from Sony? Would they sell any of these speakers individually on Amazon? If I were to setup a new dedicated home theater room with a 5.1.2 or even a 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos system but don't want to run wires behind the wall or put holes on the ceiling, I think the Sony HT-A9 would be a great option. While the dialogue may sound like it's off-centered when you're not sitting in middle of the room, the soundstage and immersive experience could compete a full HT 5.1.4 system. I'm returning my purchase because I think I have a defective rear-right speaker or the control unit is defective. I may purchase the HT-A9 again to install it in the basement for a home theater setup but will wait a bit until Sony irons out the kinks either through software upgrades or with newer releases of the product. I will be keeping my Sonos Arc system in the living room. ... show more
