  • Amazing Menus and Apps
The best Blu-Ray player I've ever owned. Sony is usually superior with their products, but this one goes above and beyond what I thought it would be. I owned a Blu-Ray from another company for about a year, when the remote gave out and I couldn't get it to work. I bought this player as a replacement and I'm more than satisfied. It regularly updates itself and provides numerous apps, including new services like WWE Network and Amazon streaming. It also has apps for channels I never knew existed, like free movies and sports. It also has a plethora of music apps and news channels. It even has apps for free foreign language TV channels in German, Russian, Arabic and more. It comes with a small remote that is very easy to use. I do worry about the remote giving out quickly because it is not very strongly built, but I've had the same remote over a year now and so far it's continued to work. This player also has a USB plug-in for flash drives. I can take movies from my computer and copy them to my flash drive to watch them on my Blu-Ray player. I can also watch picture slideshows and listen to my music collection off the same flash drive. I am also happy to report that the Netflix app shows up really well on this player. I get a full-view experience of icons, descriptions, menu items and a bit of a slideshow when I click on a certain show or movie. It really helps me to pick out what I want and to get a description so I can decide what to add to my watch list. Closed-captioning is also very easy to read and the font can be customized on certain apps. There is also a YouTube app where I can watch videos easily. This player is very small and light so it was super easy to find a place for it. I have not noticed any problems with overheating and it gathers very little dust. I am very happy with the high quality viewing and the wired ethernet makes it really fast. The only issue I have is that the plug-in for this player is a little bit larger (it's like a square box plug-in that's similar to the old DC plugs you'd find on 80's electronics). This player would be perfect if the plug-in looked more generalized. ... show more

  • A bargain for the price right now, amazing amount of function.
Some bad reviews on this and maybe has a high failure rate, but I found it very good. I bought this for the hotel, then decided to give to my sister. It is a highly compact Blu-Ray player with all the function of the Sony Smart Application network. I plugged in an Ethernet cable and it updated, and almost immediately my sister could use Netflix and other services as well as play Blu-Rays, DVD's and CD's. A nice little system. Full function remote is the same as on my full-size Sony player. The price was under fifty dollars and included shipping. All you need is an HDMI cable and you're good to go. Recommended. If it fails as a player in a year or so, I can still see using the Netflix and other functionality, it makes it like a built in Roku. ... show more

  • A STEAL FOR THE PRICE. I LOVE IT.
This blu-ray player works great. It has the streaming apps that I use (Netflix, Amazon Video, and Vudu). It is a little slow to start Netflix, but it is something that I can live with. The Netflix interface looks really good, but browsing the categories and video is a little slow. It looks sturdy. It is compact. It is easy to set up. Using my USB keyboard to set up my accounts was very helpful. For the price that I paid for this player it is all I ever wanted. All the streaming apps work great. ... show more

  • worked reliably for 5 years
all functions worked fine till the 5 year mark when the internet apps (netflix and amazon, even youtube) ceased to function correctly. could get into those apps, but anytime i wanted to play something from them, the video stream would not show, and sometimes the player would reboot. dvd's still played fine, and internet audio apps (primarily pandora) continued to function. bought a newer bd player, and everything works again, so it's not a network issue. latest firmware was applied about a month before all these issues came up, and everything worked ok for a while... but now i've retired the player to be a disc-only machine in another room. i'm not ruling out that it is the latest firmware that caused this, but i sort of doubt it since all function worked for a bit after the update. i think it is just coincidence that the player started to malfunction shortly after the update. ... show more

  • Works great, easy to use, plays Amazon Instant Video
Ordered this Sony after comparing with the Samsung BD-F5700. I wanted support for Amazon Instant Video so chose the Sony (the Samsung also has wifi but I don't need that). The Sony works great. It played all our content including older home authored DVDs without problem and it was easy to register my Amazon account and then watch Instant Video. The Amazon Video selection UI is slow but video playback was fine. General UI controls are unusually good for inexpensive consumer electronics. Some reviews did not like the styling but seems fine to me, a small $70 disk player is not going to be a masterpiece of modern art. I updated system software update before using Amazon Instant Video, don't know if that was required but it was easy to do. ... show more

  • A few problems with it: UPDATE
UPDATE: My comments below are still valid, BUT I LOVE THIS PLAYER. I was surprised to see I've been using it for 5 years. I even found a new feature that a lot of other players won't do: I have a bunch of old CD ROMs.. I bought a big box sometime like 2010. Hardly used them. But I can download old movies released to the public domain like "The Screaming Skull" and burn them to a CD and the Sony will read the disc, identify an MP4 file and play it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I bought this it to replace the DVD side of my 10 year old Goldstar DVD/VCR. The Goldstar could not read a number of discs with slight defects and there were little skips on some newer discs which might mean more MPEG compression than the Goldstar's old CPU could handle. Surely the Sony would handle this. And it does! On a known defective disc it could not read the worst part but read a lot more. It was nice to add Blu-Ray because I go to bargain bins and thrift stores and soon I'll find Blu-Ray discs there. It is so small it is easy to find it room even with the old DVD/VCR keeping its spot in my entertainment center. However... The old Goldstar had a quirk. Sometimes I check the dialogue with the English subtitles. Then I cycle thru the rest -- usually French and Spanish -- and off. I did this recently and in the next scene there was a logo, "Katie's Birthday". Below it was "El Cumpleaño de Katie". Every time something like a sign appears on the screen a subtitle in the last language of the list has to come on as well. Surely, Sony would not have that bug. Hah, it has the same subtitle bug! There is no justification for the remote being so tiny; it's about the size of a pack of cigarettes. I find it hard to find a button and barely get a fingernail on it. I sometimes hit the button next to it as well with undesirable consequences. There is a justification for the black color of the remote -- everyone does it, it's industry standard. A splash of bright color on the side would make the remote easier to spot. I put on some reflectorized red and white tape. So, I gave it 4 stars. ... show more

  • When it works it's great.
This is a pretty good bluray player, with lots of streaming apps, most of which I don't use. My main use is Amazon Prime, YouTube and Netflix. On occasion I'll play a BR, but have never tried DVDs. The Ethernet connection is rock solid, though I do wish they'd come out with a player with Gigabit. On Amazon Prime the video has some initial blurriness for a few seconds then clears up. I typically watch the free TV shows on Amazon Prime like NYPD Blue and some old Star Trek shows. The advantage with Prime is that the shows are in the correct aspect ratio. 4:3 content is displayed correctly. This is not the case on Netflix and I've tried everything on my end to fix it, but I think it's a problem on Netflix's end. I've seen lots of complaints about the locking up. This happens a few times a month and it is frustrating having to unplug this machine, as no amount of button pushing will correct it. On Amazon Prime when you're watching the final credits for a TV show an icon will pop up for the next episode. You can wait for the show to play or just click the center button on the remote to go to the next episode. If that icon doesn't appear it's probably going to lock up. So far I've found two solutions: 1) Do not press the center button - just allow the next episode to play. 2) If you're done viewing, immediately press the remote's on/off button to turn it off. If you press any other button first it will lock up. I'd like to give this player a better review, but even after updating the firmware the locking up remains. I see complaints about it not having WiFi. I think that's ridiculous. If you need WiFi there are plenty of other machines. At the time I bought it in summer 2014 it was ten or twenty dollars cheaper than WiFi models. I bought this specifically for it's Ethernet connection, and another Sony with WiFi for another TV that was too far away to run a wire. ... show more

  • Fantastic player at a great price!
This Blu-Ray player was sold as "like new". The seller was being modest, as it arrived brand-new in a factory-sealed box. I purchased this model since I had purchased the same model from Wal-Mart a couple of years back for a friend. This unit was priced well below Wal-Mart. While this unit was not manufactured this year, Blu-Ray players have changed very little. As long as you can connect it to a wired Ethernet connection, all of the available firmware updates can be easily downloaded. ... show more
