This player has a bad reputation for freezing and skipping. That’s because people don’t set it up correctly. I bought it and looked all over YouTube and Google for information and help with setting it up correctly. After finding the correct way and getting it done, I’ve had no problems. The picture and sound quality is phenomenal to me! I’m glad I bought it and didn’t spend more money on a more expensive player. I’m buying my favorite movies again, now on 4KUHD BluRay. It’s fun to explore a new format again. To see new details in the picture in these movies I’ve seen many times before on old formats, from VHS to BluRay. 4K BluRay is worth the cost of a new player and discs. Especially this player, one that’s not too expensive and not too advanced for a first time 4k buyer. Another great thing about this player is that it can make your older disc formats look better than before! Its upscaling power is great when used right. One thing that keeps 4K discs from skipping or freezing is to keep the 4k upscale setting on OFF. There’s no need to upscale a disc that’s already in 4k. When playing older, non 4k disc, turn the setting ON. It will improve the picture quality noticeably. Even for DVD-Rs this is true. Also, keep your discs clean and not scratched. Especially new 4K discs. It truly makes a difference. I would recommend this player to anyone who is willing to learn how to use it correctly. It’s not the most advanced one, and you must pay attention to its settings for what you’re playing. But its price is not too much money to spend exploring a new format. I’ve been waiting for years now for these players to be less expensive. It finally happened for me.

We absolutely love this player! It has wireless intetnet connection which is a real plus. It’s very easy to set up. The picture when streaming apps is excellent quality! My husband is a quadriplegic with a motorized wheelchair. He can use the infrared connection of the Blu-ray player to control the tv. This player is a little pricier than some others, but it’d well worth the money!!!

Major Update: I incorrectly stated in now deleted earlier review that it was a 6 or 7 step process to rewatch a scene by temporarily adding subtitles for a hard to understand dialogue scene. It's actually a simple 2 or 3-step process: rewind a few seconds to dialogue part, then click the "subtitles" button, then click again when through. I was too dumb to know about the dedicated subtitles button and was going through the long process of going into menu sections and clicking all over the place:) Still a 4-star review, because of crowded remote buttons with no backlight, always clicking wrong button. But playback of discs has been almost perfect, with one or two discs freezing on a scene for a couple seconds before self restarting, then discs freeze error fixed by wiping discs carefully with micro-fiber cloth. I think every 4k blu ray player on the market has freeze errors on occasion, almost always because of a scratch or smudge on disc. Important point where another reviewer misleads you: The reviewer has given misleading information that the ubp-x700 is defective or poor quality because after 20 minutes of pausing a disc the unit will self turnoff and then you have to restart disc again from beginning, forced to rewatch the FBI warning, intro, etc, etc. This is NOT a problem with this player; it's a problem with earlier standard blu rays that were not encoded to restart where you left off. But yes, the player will turn off after about 20 minutes, no big deal for me.

I have a pretty decent home theater setup, 8k Denon receiver and Samsung 63" TV along with some great speakers and a good sub. I've been wanting to take the 4K Blu-ray splurge and have been looking for the prices to drop and picked this player up for around $150 which was a sweet deal. Not much to choose from besides Sony and Panasonic. I didn't want to spend $500 for a player either. So.. I figured I would give this one a try. Some of the negative reviews make no sense?? Unless you have a seperate 4k receiver with good speakers (5.1) there's not much sense in buying one of these. Plus, you need to make sure you are using high speed HDMI cables especially between the player to the receiver and to the TV or you will have problems. Nice that Sony included a high speed HDMI cable which was smart to avoid typical returns. Complaints with buffering is typically related to incompatible equipment and cables. Most do not understand that streaming 4K from Netflix or Amazon is lower grade and mostly Dolby Digital Plus audio for the most part so that most can use it with no problems. 75% of the soundbars sold can't decode anything above DD Plus. Your audio needs to be able to play Dolby Digital True HD or DTS HD Master or better like ATMOS. Just trying to help others understand :-). Okay, enough of that! This player serves its basic purpose! I have zero problems playing any 4K Blu-Ray movie and most are triple layer discs. I don't have a Dolby Vision compatible TV so I turned that feature off in my settings. From what I understand, that's where some issues arise with triple layer discs. Maybe in a few years, I'll upgrade to that and I don't have the room for a 7.2 audio system either. If and when I do upgrade, I'll get a more expensive Blu-ray player. My only gripe is that this is an older product that doesn't support the newer HDR plus and the new HDMI standard. But so far, everything works fine for me. Other gripes include a very basic UI and no adjustment for how long you can pause for along with only 100 meg ethernet and only basic wi-fi "N" speeds but I would not use this to watch Netflix for sure. Other than that, this is a solid player and a great buy for the money!

It's a well priced 4k player. Easy to use and picture is great. Locks up pretty regularly though. I'd say 1 out of 2 movies on average it locks up and needs a hard reboot or it reboots itself after it hangs for a bit. Sometimes it happens multiple times during a movie. Pretty frustrating. But if you don't mind getting up to unplug the thing and then find your spot then it's worth the price. Seems a lot of players, this one and others have simmilar problems. Maybe I'll get a remote controlled power plug just for this thing. Then I can turn it off and on again without getting up. Adjusting from 3 to 5 stars. Seems they have patched the lock up problem. Works like a champ now, no issues.

Quality player. Beautiful picture, depth of sound. Good value. Infrequently, the sound will cut out for 1/2 a second. I believe this is the "skip" referred to in other reviews. It is not often and does not detract from the quality experience of this player. Worth the money.

EDIT: I have had problems with this player from day one. The new cables help the audio a great deal but almost every disc freezes up when playing. I contacted this seller, but it is past the 30-day return window. So, I am trying to contact Sony for warranty work. Once it's fixed, I will sell it. I've already ordered another unit, different brand. As of a week ago, we now own four UHD 4k discs given to us this Christmas. But we only had a 1080p Blu-Ray player. So, we had to upgrade to view the new movies. I ordered this one the day after Christmas here on Amazon. It arrived only a couple of days later. We can watch our new 4k discs and all others before this (DVD & Blu-Ray) as it is backwards compatible. Why did I almost return it? When setting it up, I thought I'd save time and complication by using the HDMI cable I had with the Blu-Ray. Just unplug from old player and plug into new player. RIght? Easy. Fast. However, the first disk we were watching would freeze up. Intolerable. Dang it. So, I initiated a return. But before I brought it to the UPS store to return it, I did simple research about what causes discs or data stream from the disc to freeze up in the first place. Turns out, a cable not able to support the larger bandwidth can do that. Huh. So, I looked at the cable that was supplied with the player and it was rated 18Gps, 4K which is what's recommended for a UHD 4k player. I swapped the old cable with the new supplied one, rewatched the first disc, then watched the remaining three. Not a single freeze up. I'm sold. Not an issue with the player, just an underrated HDMI cable. So, to the reviewers giving this player a bad wrap over freezing up I ask you, "Did you use the supplied 18 Gps 4k HDMI cable that is supplied with the player? The audio will blank out a couple of times for a couple of seconds with each disc, but I've read that it can happen when the disk changes layers during the movie. I have ordered a new cable rated for the same 18 Gps 4k for the ARC (Audio Return Channel) from my TV to the HT receiver. I am hoping that'll take care of the quick little audio gaps. If it doesn't, eh...no big deal. So, we (my wife included) love this new player.

I've had a Sony "Ultra-Blu-Ray" player since ultra blu-ray became available. Unfortunately, lasers in these players eventually wear out. Mine started being unable to play blu-ray writable discs (it still played DVD's) so I figured the writing was on the wall - I needed a new player. Hence this purchase. Set up was trivial - unplugged the old, plugged in the new and I was good to go. Movies look beautiful and I'm able to play those write once dvd's again.
