I purchased a LG 4k 40" tv In which I am extremely happy with. However, my blue ray player was old and out dated, so I decided to purchase a ultra hd 4k Blu-ray player. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a player I didn't know was going to work. I researched players for a week. After reading reviews (for what they're worth) and going directly to the manufactures site. I narrowed it down to this Sony or a Panasonic. I chose the Sony and I am extremely glad I did. I received it promptly. Hook up was simple with the supplied high speed HDMI cable that came with it. Plugged it in, turned it on without a glitch. Set up for wi-fi was easy. Connected effortlessly. Popped in a 4k disk and it ran smoothly. No hesitation, no freezing up and no pixelation. I am very very happy. The picture is phenomenal. The owners manual is very thorough. So therefore, I am giving this Sony Player 5 stars and highly recommend it.

I have a pretty decent home theater setup, 8k Denon receiver and Samsung 63" TV along with some great speakers and a good sub. I've been wanting to take the 4K Blu-ray splurge and have been looking for the prices to drop and picked this player up for around $150 which was a sweet deal. Not much to choose from besides Sony and Panasonic. I didn't want to spend $500 for a player either. So.. I figured I would give this one a try. Some of the negative reviews make no sense?? Unless you have a seperate 4k receiver with good speakers (5.1) there's not much sense in buying one of these. Plus, you need to make sure you are using high speed HDMI cables especially between the player to the receiver and to the TV or you will have problems. Nice that Sony included a high speed HDMI cable which was smart to avoid typical returns. Complaints with buffering is typically related to incompatible equipment and cables. Most do not understand that streaming 4K from Netflix or Amazon is lower grade and mostly Dolby Digital Plus audio for the most part so that most can use it with no problems. 75% of the soundbars sold can't decode anything above DD Plus. Your audio needs to be able to play Dolby Digital True HD or DTS HD Master or better like ATMOS. Just trying to help others understand :-). Okay, enough of that! This player serves its basic purpose! I have zero problems playing any 4K Blu-Ray movie and most are triple layer discs. I don't have a Dolby Vision compatible TV so I turned that feature off in my settings. From what I understand, that's where some issues arise with triple layer discs. Maybe in a few years, I'll upgrade to that and I don't have the room for a 7.2 audio system either. If and when I do upgrade, I'll get a more expensive Blu-ray player. My only gripe is that this is an older product that doesn't support the newer HDR plus and the new HDMI standard. But so far, everything works fine for me. Other gripes include a very basic UI and no adjustment for how long you can pause for along with only 100 meg ethernet and only basic wi-fi "N" speeds but I would not use this to watch Netflix for sure. Other than that, this is a solid player and a great buy for the money!

When I bought this unit 6 months ago it functioned just fine. Within 4 months it started gliching. The image and sound would blank out for a second or so. Then it would continue, with some of the movie skipped over. This has gotten worse rapidly and the unit is no longer usable. This occurs on DVD, Bluray and 4K Ultra videos. None are immune. I have gone throught firmware updates its says are not needed. It appears to be junk after 6 months. I am having trouble getting support from Sony. My advice is to avoid this Sony product. UPDATE - I have edited this post. I reseated every cable (1) and reviewed the settings. I made one change and now it is A-OKAY.

We absolutely love this player! It has wireless intetnet connection which is a real plus. It’s very easy to set up. The picture when streaming apps is excellent quality! My husband is a quadriplegic with a motorized wheelchair. He can use the infrared connection of the Blu-ray player to control the tv. This player is a little pricier than some others, but it’d well worth the money!!!

The first couple of weeks I had this unit I was ready to throw it on the junk pile. Every DVD I put in it would freeze about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through the movie. Tried different settings....nothing worked. Then I saw a video where someone said you literally have to clean off new dvds with soap and water or maybe windex straight out of the case. Id never heard of doing that, but took a shot. Since I started doing that, not one single issue of freezing! Picture is great, sound is great....no complaints.

This player has a bad reputation for freezing and skipping. That’s because people don’t set it up correctly. I bought it and looked all over YouTube and Google for information and help with setting it up correctly. After finding the correct way and getting it done, I’ve had no problems. The picture and sound quality is phenomenal to me! I’m glad I bought it and didn’t spend more money on a more expensive player. I’m buying my favorite movies again, now on 4KUHD BluRay. It’s fun to explore a new format again. To see new details in the picture in these movies I’ve seen many times before on old formats, from VHS to BluRay. 4K BluRay is worth the cost of a new player and discs. Especially this player, one that’s not too expensive and not too advanced for a first time 4k buyer. Another great thing about this player is that it can make your older disc formats look better than before! Its upscaling power is great when used right. One thing that keeps 4K discs from skipping or freezing is to keep the 4k upscale setting on OFF. There’s no need to upscale a disc that’s already in 4k. When playing older, non 4k disc, turn the setting ON. It will improve the picture quality noticeably. Even for DVD-Rs this is true. Also, keep your discs clean and not scratched. Especially new 4K discs. It truly makes a difference. I would recommend this player to anyone who is willing to learn how to use it correctly. It’s not the most advanced one, and you must pay attention to its settings for what you’re playing. But its price is not too much money to spend exploring a new format. I’ve been waiting for years now for these players to be less expensive. It finally happened for me.

I really regret this purchase decision. This is one of the worst products of any kind I have bought and looking at reviews I can see the problems I have are not one off issues with a single defective unit. I got into collecting physical media about 5 months ago and was very excited about it but I started noticing that a lot of the discs I was buying were freezing up, wouldn't play past a certain point, etc. Sometimes you can fix the issue by skipping ahead a chapter and then rewinding to where you were (which is a pain) but sometimes you can't. The last straw came tonight when I tried playing one of my discs from an expensive Pasolini box set and I couldn't get the disc to play past about an hour and a half in. For some reason I kept blaming the discs and not the player but since it was happening with probably over 50 percent of my discs I realized it must be the player. I took the Pasolini disc out and played it in my PS5 and it played fine. The one thing a blu-ray or 4K player needs to be able to do is play back discs (that's my humble opinion anyway) and this player is terrible at its most important job (the Pasolini disc was not 4K either, I've read this player is worse with 4K but it's clearly not only 4K that's a problem for it). Do not buy this player. Even if you have to spend a bit more on a different brand there is a very good chance you will regret buying this product if you do.

I am rarely impressed this much... This 4K UHD Blu-Ray player makes everything look better and sound better. It plays 4K UHD Blu-Ray discs at full 4K UHD quality, and it will automatically upscale DVDs and 1080p Blu-ray discs to improve their visual quality. I have a 4K UHD TV smart TV (Google TV) but nothing has looked this good on it before. Truly gorgeous. Also, the sound quality is better than when I watch the exact same content on the same apps on the Google TV platform. When the same content's audio sounds that much better, that tells you that the Blu Ray player is using better audio codecs and processing. Kudos there. Even without the sound bar turned on...it sounds better when using just the TV internal speakers. With the sound bar on, it's literally heaven for my ears. If you have a streaming services account that includes 4K content, watch it on this device if you want to see the full beauty of 4K UHD. The player includes apps for Netflix, Fandango@Home (formerly VUDU), Amazon Prime, YouTube, and Tubi. It also includes music apps Pandora and Spotify. Unfortunately that it does not include apps for Max, Peacock, Hulu, or Disney+. (At least not yet.) I am truly impressed. For the price you are getting a great addition to you home theater. If you have any doubts, just buy it. You won't be disappointed!
