When I read the reviews criticizing this Sony player for the lack of the ability to add apps, I left it in my order queue of a few weeks. However, when the price dropped under $90, I bought it. - It can play CDs encoded with MP3 music files and play them in a random order. However, if you have folders in a USB folder, it will only play the songs in random order within the folder. - On the USB drive, it will play MP4, FLV, MKV, VOB, and some AVI video files. It fail to play a majority of my AVI files and does not separate the chapters as well as my old Patriot Box. - It read my 4TB portable hard drive that had almost 3TB of video/audio material. However, it did not read both partitions of a partitioned 4TB hard drive. It kept reading the same one partition regardless of how many times I plugged and replugged the drive in the USB port. - It will freeze frame and step frame advance video files. It does not reverse step frame. - The slowest speed on fast forward/rewind is too fast to land a desired place. - Even though it has Bluetooth 4 versus the Bluetooth 5 in my PCs, it was a lot easier to connect it to my Bluetooth speakers. - If all you steam is Amazon Prime video, Netflix, YouTube, and Tubi, then the apps are okay for you. It does not have most of the video streaming apps and no method to add them even though it has a software upgrade option for Sony to upgrade it software. However, it appears Sony does not plan to upgrade its software since I tried to upgrade it when I initialized the player, and no upgrades were available. It appears the major manufacturers of Blu-ray players have stopped making new models. - I have hundreds of DVDs and less than a hundred Blu-ray disk but could not find a DVD player that had some of the features in this player. I was also looking for a backup to an old Patriot box that is no longer manufactured. The current media players and Android boxes do not have all the features that the Patriot box has. I had hoped Patriot was going to update the box versus discontinuing making them but streaming probably made them obsolete for the mass market. I have old DVRs with hard drives that made it easy to edit out commercials before burning them to a DVD and/or converting them to an AVI or MP4 file so was looking for something to continue playing them. AVI used to be the most popular video files before MP4 took over that title so it appears I will only be able to play them on my Patriot or PC as time continues to make so of my older files obsolete. I have this player hooked up to a large screen TV with 4 HDMI inputs so I can listen to music while surfing the net or watching TV with this set up. I am not sure who really buys Blu-ray players unless one has a large library of those disks. Blu-ray is basically obsolete and there are better devices for streaming now. However, there are enough features that is player has that I could not get with today's devices and with 4 HDMI ports, this player met my needs.

It has the apps I wanted, Prime Video. YouTube and Netflix plus a few I didn't know I wanted such as Tubi and Pandora. The only down side is I frequently get error codes when opening apps that say "Cannot open this application because it is to large. The application has been terminated." The only fix I have so far is to unplug the unit for a couple minutes then plug it back in. Seems to work fine for a few days before it happens again.

I'm not particularly tech-savvy, and this is the first blu-ray player I've purchased so I wasn't sure what to expect. The UI was easy to navigate; it's pretty much plug-n-play, although a few extra steps will be needed if you are hooking external speakers. Picture quality was great and it played my new discs just fine. Recommend.

I bought this exact model last year on October 1st, 2016. Aside from the occasional glitch.. it was ok for about the first 3-4 months. Then it started having all sorts of crazy issues. Dropping the Wi-Fi connection repeatedly... also it would occasionally forget the Wi-Fi password info... I had to reenter it all like it was the first time use...Bas time went on it started to get worse... sometimes it would do everything without a hitch.. other times it was just nothing but trouble. As it started getting worse it would just freeze up. Today it is doing all of these things... and on a pretty regular basis. There is rarely a day goes by that it doesn't give me trouble. ** My Bad.... I never reported any of this because.. like I had said.. it seemed to be fine for about the first 3-4 months. It has never been moved.. still sits in the same place as it always has. I'm a single 50 something female... No pets.. no children.. and I am well above the average intelligence. I just hate like h___ to return something. I mean.. I'd rather have a tooth removed. Now let's take a look at the purchase. It was October 1st, 2016. The unit was shopping from Florida during a hurricane. Which was hindsight for me, or I would have purchased from another source. The seller was congenial... and I.. being the compassionate soul that I am, returned a message of complete understanding for what the seller was going through at the time. I totally appreciated the seller staying in touch with me. Which was a lot more than could be said of many others. So the Blu-ray player was delivered... seemingly in great shape. I was delighted at it's arrival. Got it all set up and Bing it worked like a charm. I was a happy camper. There were signs really early on as little glitches happened here and there. I had also purchased a new Sony 50" TV just shortly before the Blu-ray player. Ok I have finally arrived into the 21st Century. Now... Let's buy some movies... Yeah!!👻😃 I'm just your good ole' fashioned movie geek. 🤓 and proudly so. This unit just gradually started hg having problems... At first it was just very random.. gradually it became more frequent.. until about 3 months ago it was 2-3 times a week and now it's every day. Many times I don't even get through a movie without having it freeze up 2-3 times. Or having the unit just shut down completely on its own. Now I'm not talking about streaming movies... I can be watching a Blu-ray disc and it will do that.. just stop in the middle of a frame or actually shut down completely.. the whole unit. Now I'm looking for a new unit. I'm a believer in Sony products. I further believe that I was sold a unit that, for whatever reason, had some bugs. It is my fault for not getting back to the seller earlier on. Yet.. under the circumstances (Florida Hurricane).. gradual decline, and time passed before recognized... Then add my own dislike for returns, and personal compassion for the seller.. I just couldn't do it. So... All of that being said... I'm going to purchase a new unit.. same model... However.. I guess there's a small piece of me who wishes they would show some compassion my way and give me a real nice discount on my new unit. They could have the old unit back and refurbish it. The reason for my 4 Star rating is... Purely because I don't believe anyone is at fault here. It was, in some form or fashion, a defective unit. When it worked properly, it was a good player. Yet I do believe it has a much greater capability than I was ever able to experience. So in light of the no fault rule and simply my faith in what I believe it can do.. I have given this unit what I believe it really deserves.. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4- Stars... basically for the potential. Thank You! I cannot honestly rate the customer service... since I never really used it. However the seller was very much on top of things. Stayed in contact.. he did let me know that.. as a result of the hurricane (a natural disaster) my unit would be delayed. It is my belief that the seller did everything in his power to get the unit it to me without too much delay. Do I think it is capable of 5 stars? Absolutely! Watch for my new review of the new unit. It will be fantastic!!

My previous player was a Sony, so this was virtually a plug and play set-up. It could not have been easier following the on-screen instructions and took less than 5 minutes to get ready for use.
