  • Easy to Use, Great Picture! Very Happy
Style: Single
I am very happy with this purchase. I recently bought my first flat screen TV, had an older DVD player and an older Sony stereo for 5:1 surround sound. I wanted to be able to make my dumb TV smart, so I bought a Roku. I loved it, but there were no hookups to split the sound from the video and so the sound came through the TV instead of my beautiful vintage Pioneer speakers. This Steaming Blu-Ray solved the problem. I got rid of the old DVD player and put the Roku in a bedroom. I still had a problem, though. The old DVD player had RCA cables to connect to my older stereo system. This does not. It has an audio co-axial cable connection and another connection that was unusable for an older system. I naively thought co-axle cable was what I used in the bedrooms to connect the TV to cable. So, I researched what it was, bought an audio sound co-axial cable and I needed a digital to analog converter box. The audio co-axial attached to the converter box, and the other side of the converter box had RCA hookup. Voila! I now have wonderful streaming, and I can hear my sound through my vintage Pioneer speakers. The player itself was easy to set up. If you have a current stereo system, you will have no problems. I relate my experience for those like me who are modern, but still like their older components. I have not had any issues with the Blu Ray player and thought it was a bargain price wise and functionality. ... show more

  • Fast load up speeds and exception color with great clarity

I bought this unit to replace y 8 year Sony Blu-ray unit that began to develop personality issues. The old unit began to pick and choose which bluray disk it liked and didn't like. I like Sony products. They're high quality, function well and last, so it was logical that I would select another Sony player to replace the old one. I looked at the units that were available and read the reviews. This lead me to selecting this unit. Initially, when I "plugged and played" this unit in the spot of the old one, I had issues with playback of the disk would appear to hesitate and black out and then resumed where it "hiccuped." I tried several disk and it the same thing with varying frequency between disk. I changed the settings and removed the option to produce near 4K quality. This appeared to remove the "hiccuping", but reduced the vibrancy of the color. I did a little researching online and found two probable causes. The first one dealt with replacing the HDMI cable with one designed for high speed, and the second was updating the firmware. I elected to try number two first since it didn't involve going out to the store. The update took approximately 10 to 15 minutes. This cured the "hiccup" or pause/blackout of the playback. I reset all the setting to produce near 4K quality. The color quality improved and the skipping or hiccuping disappeared. With this issue resolved, I could enjoy my blu-ray. The load up speed is fantastic and the color is exceptional. I made the right decision in selecting this unit. ... show more

  • Unfortunate Mishap!
Style: Single
I bought this exact model last year on October 1st, 2016. Aside from the occasional glitch.. it was ok for about the first 3-4 months. Then it started having all sorts of crazy issues. Dropping the Wi-Fi connection repeatedly... also it would occasionally forget the Wi-Fi password info... I had to reenter it all like it was the first time use...Bas time went on it started to get worse... sometimes it would do everything without a hitch.. other times it was just nothing but trouble. As it started getting worse it would just freeze up. Today it is doing all of these things... and on a pretty regular basis. There is rarely a day goes by that it doesn't give me trouble. ** My Bad.... I never reported any of this because.. like I had said.. it seemed to be fine for about the first 3-4 months. It has never been moved.. still sits in the same place as it always has. I'm a single 50 something female... No pets.. no children.. and I am well above the average intelligence. I just hate like h___ to return something. I mean.. I'd rather have a tooth removed. Now let's take a look at the purchase. It was October 1st, 2016. The unit was shopping from Florida during a hurricane. Which was hindsight for me, or I would have purchased from another source. The seller was congenial... and I.. being the compassionate soul that I am, returned a message of complete understanding for what the seller was going through at the time. I totally appreciated the seller staying in touch with me. Which was a lot more than could be said of many others. So the Blu-ray player was delivered... seemingly in great shape. I was delighted at it's arrival. Got it all set up and Bing it worked like a charm. I was a happy camper. There were signs really early on as little glitches happened here and there. I had also purchased a new Sony 50" TV just shortly before the Blu-ray player. Ok I have finally arrived into the 21st Century. Now... Let's buy some movies... Yeah!!👻😃 I'm just your good ole' fashioned movie geek. 🤓 and proudly so. This unit just gradually started hg having problems... At first it was just very random.. gradually it became more frequent.. until about 3 months ago it was 2-3 times a week and now it's every day. Many times I don't even get through a movie without having it freeze up 2-3 times. Or having the unit just shut down completely on its own. Now I'm not talking about streaming movies... I can be watching a Blu-ray disc and it will do that.. just stop in the middle of a frame or actually shut down completely.. the whole unit. Now I'm looking for a new unit. I'm a believer in Sony products. I further believe that I was sold a unit that, for whatever reason, had some bugs. It is my fault for not getting back to the seller earlier on. Yet.. under the circumstances (Florida Hurricane).. gradual decline, and time passed before recognized... Then add my own dislike for returns, and personal compassion for the seller.. I just couldn't do it. So... All of that being said... I'm going to purchase a new unit.. same model... However.. I guess there's a small piece of me who wishes they would show some compassion my way and give me a real nice discount on my new unit. They could have the old unit back and refurbish it. The reason for my 4 Star rating is... Purely because I don't believe anyone is at fault here. It was, in some form or fashion, a defective unit. When it worked properly, it was a good player. Yet I do believe it has a much greater capability than I was ever able to experience. So in light of the no fault rule and simply my faith in what I believe it can do.. I have given this unit what I believe it really deserves.. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4- Stars... basically for the potential. Thank You! I cannot honestly rate the customer service... since I never really used it. However the seller was very much on top of things. Stayed in contact.. he did let me know that.. as a result of the hurricane (a natural disaster) my unit would be delayed. It is my belief that the seller did everything in his power to get the unit it to me without too much delay. Do I think it is capable of 5 stars? Absolutely! Watch for my new review of the new unit. It will be fantastic!! ... show more

  • Who has DVDs anymore? Oh yeah, my mother-in-law....
Style: Single
The title says it all. Only my mother-in-law still insists on watching DVDs or Blu-rays. Kills me even though everything she wants I can get her streaming.... Well I needed this for the TV my mother-in-law watches so she could watch some movies and such. I needed something compact that would fit into a small space and would upscale to take advantage of the large TV. Pros: 1. Has an ethernet connection for spotty wi-fi areas like back bedrooms, garages etc. 2. Upscaler works fairly well. Not as a good as the upscaler in high end TVs or external upscalers but not bad for a $100 product. 3. Smart functions and apps for streaming seem fine and can work as a way to breath life into an older dumb tv. 4. Works well with a straight monitor, again adding streaming etc for $100. Not as good as a Roku but then again, it plays DVD and Blu-Rays. 5. Compact and fits almost anywhere. Cons: 1. Has to be hacked to be able to play out of region DVD/Blu-rays. Not so great for that. Hopefully you found this helpful! ... show more

  • Great quality for the price Great quality for the price
Style: Single
The image quality looks fantastic, especially for a Blu-ray player at this price. The 4K upscaling is noticeably sharp and clean, and regular Blu-rays look much more detailed on a large screen. 3D playback works flawlessly with no hiccups, and motion is smooth with no stuttering. The player itself is fast, quiet, and very easy to use. Menus load quickly, discs spin up fast, and everything just works the way it should. Build quality feels solid, and setup was straightforward. If you want excellent picture quality, reliable 3D performance, and great value for the money, this player absolutely delivers. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Problem piece
Style: Single
The first problem I noticed was that this box does not come with an HDMI cable and a separate one needed to be purchased. Upon further investigation, I found that there are some models that come with the cable while others do not. After cable purchase and installation, set up and internet connection was relatively easy and user friendly; though mine is connected through Ethernet cable and not WiFi. Applications such as YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon Video were easy to find and quick to install. Dvd/Blu Ray player worked great, apps worked fine. The next problem could be due to a faulty box, as I have not read all the reviews, I have no way of knowing in others are experience this same problem. After continuous usage the system shuts down. The screen will go black, the tray won't open, and the box will not shut off. The only way I have found to correct this issue is by unplugging the box for an extended period of time. I have not found any period this happens. Sometime the system works great for 6 hours of useage, and sometimes it will happen after only 2 hours. The same with unplugging it. Sometimes it will work again after 5 minutes of being unplugged, and sometimes it takes an hour before it works properly again. The only positive thing about it is that has not happened in the middle of watching something; be DVD or Netflix, the only time it happens is when trying to go from one application to the next (i.e. After watching a DVD and wanting to switch to Netflix.) Upon being plugged back in, no information is lost as usernames and passwords are not needed for Netflix or Amazon Video to work. The system seems to work fine after unplugging and re plugging in. Until it happens the next time. The HDMI cable was frustrating and makes the system more expensive (figure another $25 for a good HDMI cable), but the no response problem has turned me off completely to this system. Apps: It contains many applications, including the one that most people probably look for (Netflix, Amazon Video, you Tube) but there are many more apps this system could stand to have (HBO, CW) and doesn't. I have not tried any of the music apps. ... show more

  • sony player wins out over samasung
Style: Single
this is an awesome product and I can attest to the quality of the videos and streaming Ive had a samsung UDHD player that was a bit of a disappointment , it crashes and samasung has removed many features from it from its initial release (thats a bit of BS imo) and overall its large, wide, and not reliable needless to say this sony comes with WAY more apps then the samsungs by comparison, its smaller easier to move around, its more powerful, faster to boot up in its quick boot and has yet to crash or have any issue ive used this samsung since its release , and when side by side with the same tv and same videos it loses out to the Sony in terms of quality, in video and sound heres also the clincher..... the samsung was 499$ and now is 369$ the sony is way cheaper ! and works better ..... so why would i ever buy the samsung? it was supposed to play the new UDHD videos (actually it cant play all and has issues with 90% of them ....) so why bother? the quality in all honesty was the same when compared to a standard bluray on the sony on the same 4k setup and tv the sony is by far worth the cost and works better ... show more
