  • Who has DVDs anymore? Oh yeah, my mother-in-law....
Style: Single
The title says it all. Only my mother-in-law still insists on watching DVDs or Blu-rays. Kills me even though everything she wants I can get her streaming.... Well I needed this for the TV my mother-in-law watches so she could watch some movies and such. I needed something compact that would fit into a small space and would upscale to take advantage of the large TV. Pros: 1. Has an ethernet connection for spotty wi-fi areas like back bedrooms, garages etc. 2. Upscaler works fairly well. Not as a good as the upscaler in high end TVs or external upscalers but not bad for a $100 product. 3. Smart functions and apps for streaming seem fine and can work as a way to breath life into an older dumb tv. 4. Works well with a straight monitor, again adding streaming etc for $100. Not as good as a Roku but then again, it plays DVD and Blu-Rays. 5. Compact and fits almost anywhere. Cons: 1. Has to be hacked to be able to play out of region DVD/Blu-rays. Not so great for that. Hopefully you found this helpful! ... show more

  • Great features except for the lack of apps
Style: Single
When I read the reviews criticizing this Sony player for the lack of the ability to add apps, I left it in my order queue of a few weeks. However, when the price dropped under $90, I bought it. - It can play CDs encoded with MP3 music files and play them in a random order. However, if you have folders in a USB folder, it will only play the songs in random order within the folder. - On the USB drive, it will play MP4, FLV, MKV, VOB, and some AVI video files. It fail to play a majority of my AVI files and does not separate the chapters as well as my old Patriot Box. - It read my 4TB portable hard drive that had almost 3TB of video/audio material. However, it did not read both partitions of a partitioned 4TB hard drive. It kept reading the same one partition regardless of how many times I plugged and replugged the drive in the USB port. - It will freeze frame and step frame advance video files. It does not reverse step frame. - The slowest speed on fast forward/rewind is too fast to land a desired place. - Even though it has Bluetooth 4 versus the Bluetooth 5 in my PCs, it was a lot easier to connect it to my Bluetooth speakers. - If all you steam is Amazon Prime video, Netflix, YouTube, and Tubi, then the apps are okay for you. It does not have most of the video streaming apps and no method to add them even though it has a software upgrade option for Sony to upgrade it software. However, it appears Sony does not plan to upgrade its software since I tried to upgrade it when I initialized the player, and no upgrades were available. It appears the major manufacturers of Blu-ray players have stopped making new models. - I have hundreds of DVDs and less than a hundred Blu-ray disk but could not find a DVD player that had some of the features in this player. I was also looking for a backup to an old Patriot box that is no longer manufactured. The current media players and Android boxes do not have all the features that the Patriot box has. I had hoped Patriot was going to update the box versus discontinuing making them but streaming probably made them obsolete for the mass market. I have old DVRs with hard drives that made it easy to edit out commercials before burning them to a DVD and/or converting them to an AVI or MP4 file so was looking for something to continue playing them. AVI used to be the most popular video files before MP4 took over that title so it appears I will only be able to play them on my Patriot or PC as time continues to make so of my older files obsolete. I have this player hooked up to a large screen TV with 4 HDMI inputs so I can listen to music while surfing the net or watching TV with this set up. I am not sure who really buys Blu-ray players unless one has a large library of those disks. Blu-ray is basically obsolete and there are better devices for streaming now. However, there are enough features that is player has that I could not get with today's devices and with 4 HDMI ports, this player met my needs. ... show more

  • Very good player if you need 2nd player just to play region locked dvds and blu-rays.
Style: Single
Well, I live in EU, so I searched for a dedicated region A(1) player in addition to 4k (region B) player. And this player is a great unit coz: 1. It uses external 12v (110/230v) power adapter so you just need to buy us-eu adapter, and not step down transformator; 2. It has nice functionality, coz this player is also good audio player (supports SACD, but not DVD-Audio) with Bluetooth functionality and coaxial audio output. Also it still has Netflix and YouTube apps, which aren't bad if your tv doesn't has them or you don't have external dongle like FireStick for example. 3. It has a very good Amazon price and build quality. And picture quality is also great. I highly recommend it, especially for this role of secondary player if it will be available to buy again. ... show more

  • Great buy!- Sony BDP-S6700
Style: Single
This - Sony BDP-S6700, is really something else, honestly. I was a bit sceptical, how much do you improve on a Blu Ray outside 4 or 8k?, well one of the first things watched was the first 6 Star Wars movies, was like seeing them again for the first time, picture quality was honestly almost too good/clean looking, really. (There is absolutely No need for 4k or upcoming 8k movie disks with this if you have an HDR monitor or 4k tv your hooking up to.(tried both) Like I said almost too clean. Then watched The Cure's 40th Anniversary as well as Curation 25 concerts, darn, was like we were actually their, Really! On the note of the concert viewing, I decided to try the Bluetooth on this player, to an external portable speaker for better sound, easy connectivity and worked flawlessly no sound lag! The main menus were easily navigated as well. Extremely compact and lightweight, you can literally take anywhere. Comes with remote control, power cord, HDMI cable and two batteries for remote. Looked at and compared so so many, honestly, even way more expensive ones, decided to just try this and so glad I did. ... show more
