  • Initial experience: Poor
This is the second Snapper eMower that I have purchased. I'll briefly relate the story on the first one and then my experience with this one. I'll conclude with general comments that apply to both. First eMower I purchased my first Snapper eMower in Oct. 2021. It was a push mower (not self-propelled), and it served relatively well (see more under General Comments) until June of 2025 when it no longer would start and for no apparent reason. It was working fine when I finished mowing, and when I tried to start it up for the next mowing session a couple of weeks later, it simply would not start. It would only beep three times on each attempt. I store the mower in my garage out of the weather. There simply isn't much to these eMowers, so the problem must be either the motor or an electronic module. I tried disassembling the mower and didn't see any obvious problem. The electronic model is encased in wax and isn't serviceable, at least not easily. The repair bill would be literally almost as much as the cost for a new mower. I wonder how this compares to other brands. Something worth considering. This Model eMower (Step Sense) In early July 2025 I purchased this model, which is self-propelled. I didn't want a self-propelled model and, given that the Amazon writeup on this model didn't specifically describe it as self-propelled, I assumed it was push-only. However, I wasn't sure what Step Sense actually meant in the context of a push-only mower. It's probably a moot point because I don't think Snapper sells the push-only model anymore anyway. Not to digress, but if you browse the Snapper website, you cannot even navigate to a lineup of eMowers. However, you can find links to them on the Snapper website from Google search results. That fact alone has me scratching my head. Is anyone at the company paying attention??? Anyway, I ordered the Step Sense. I might have considered other brands, but I already had a fairly substantial investment in batteries for the Snapper. Upon delivery, I went through the minimal assembly required. My first reaction was to the cheesy battery door. Talk about flimsy! My push-only model with a single bay didn't have this issue. So, after the simple assembly, I began mowing in push mode. After about three minutes, the mower simply stopped for no apparent reason. I easily restarted it, but every few minutes or so, it would stop for no apparent reason, but I could always easily restart. The time interval seems random. It ranges from five seconds to several minutes. Each time it stops, I can hear and feel a click as if it were a relay action. I was using only one battery, and I tried reinserting it firmly. Nope. Later in my mowing session, I tried moving the battery from the left bay to the right bay. Nope. Also, when I lifted the battery door to move the battery, it broke off!!!! At least the door stays in place even with broken hinges. When I exhausted the one large battery, I put both of my smaller batteries in the two bays. The stalling continued. In short, I can find no obvious external cause for the stalling. Even though restarting is easy, the stalling is annoying and simply should not happen. I have not yet tried propelled mode, so I cannot comment on that feature. So, at this point, I'm going to have to bring the mower down to a local dealer for repair. BTW, don't bother trying to contact Snapper. They now have zero live customer support. They had it a few years ago, and I found them to be quite helpful (unless you got some got some b*tch with a crying baby in the background), but I guess they've "cut expenses". General Comments The ergonomics are good. This is the quality I expect from an at least formerly reputable company like Snapper. In particular, the handle is comfortable and the height adjustment options are good. One thing I do not like is the tendency for the mower to clog up. I've learned to really try to mow before the grass gets too high and definitely try to avoid mowing when the grass is wet or even moist. Except for the new mower, I ran at the lowest cut setting. Going forward, I will probably experiment with the setting one or two notches higher. My old gas mower also clogged up, but not nearly as badly. The area I live in gets only 30 inches of rain per year and only has two or three rainy months. If you live in a warm-weather area that receives a lot of rain, such as south Louisiana where I grew up, I strongly suggest you try to find a brand that does a better job ejecting grass. I really don't know how other brands of eMowers compare in this regard. Sadly, maybe a gas mower might be the best option in those situations. Summary The flimsy battery door on the Step Sense has me wondering what is happening at Snapper. I wonder if they are outsourcing their eMower products to some outfit that has no quality assurance to speak of. (Of course, Snapper quality assurance should be involved, so the buck stops with them.) That battery door should never have never made it through the development process to production. My opinion is that Snapper has failed in their attempt to enter the eMower market. The goofed-up website I mentioned above also raises concerns about the current state of Snapper. I would think that website organization and functionality should be a high priority with any company. I'm rating the product two stars because of my troubles. Without those problems, I probably would have gone with three stars. Maybe four, but that would rounding up. P.S. Was curious about the Snapper brand, so I spent a few minutes researching it. The brand was sold to Briggs & Stratton, which has sold the brand to Ningro Daye Garden Machinery Co., Ltd., apparently some Chinese outfit. As a side note, I think that Briggs and Stratton filed for Chapter 11 and has spun (or is spinning) off products such as mowers, as part of a restructuring effort. Nothing against Chinese-sourced products, per se, but Snapper is just a brand name now and probably not the actual brand we've grown up with. P.P.S. I spent time searching for a Snapper dealer in my general area with a 1M+ population. The dealers refused to work with a cordless mower. I don't know how they can get away with that, but there's really not anything I can do about it. At this point, I'm just going to return the mower for a refund. Given the poor quality of this mower, the problem I had with the previous mower, the lack of any personal (phone, chat, email) customer support, and lack of warranty repair options, I'm lowering my rating from two stars to one star. My recommendation is to look elsewhere for an eMower. BTW, I've done some research and I think that Ryobi and EGO are the clear winners. EGO is more expensive, but I suggest you go to local dealers to touch and feel them and watch videos to decide. If you care about side grass discharge, you definitely want to get an EGO 1000+ series mower and not an 800 series because of design improvements. Ryobi's side discharge looks very good as well. ... show more

Gave up mowing after the 3rd battery change. Only mowed half my .75 acre yard. Arms were very sore after. I returned this mower. ... show more

  • Not worth the money
I have always had Snapper mowers. I purchased this mower about a year ago. It was such a disappointment. The batteries for the Briggs and Stratton motor are absolute junk. First the level of charge lights went out then the batteries stopped working at 6 months. Snapper will not warranty the batteries so after spending 600.00 on the mower charger and batteries I hade to spend another 350.00 on new batteries. The Mower cuts well but know that the plastic wheels are cheap and the battery compartment lid broke off almost immediately after I had purchased it. Unfortunately I ended up donating it to a charity and decided that will be the last Snapper product I will ever buy. Simply bad quality expensive junk! ... show more

  • Look Elsewhere for E-mower
Self propelled feature is poorly designed and frustrating to use. Safety lever is also designed to shut unit off but it happens so frequently it becomes burdensome with so many restarts. Customer service and parts is non existent.
