Hey I really like this rack. It is heavy duty. Farley easy to install and looks great. I read all the reviews and nobody made mention of the wind noise. I have a rag top so I hear road noise and I'm use to it. The rack has hardware on it to put lights. When these hit high wind the noise in load. For my truck it gets really load above 50mph. I just turn my radio up loader, but it is something to be aware of. My wife always complains about it. ... show more

    • Not Bad....But......
This item was installed on a 2017 JKU Sport soft top. Overall it seems like a good solution for a roof rack with the intent to mount and transport kayaks. The instruction are pretty straight forward and assembly went relatively quickly. It's recommended for two people to assemble and install, however it can be done with one with some difficulty. I elected to mount the rear of the cage to the frame versus the optional body mounting solution. I'm not fond of drilling holes into relatively new (to us) vehicle. I do wish Smittybilt did include cutout instructions to maintain the factory rear bumper and use the frame mounting solution. Time for the bad. The instructions state that the cross bars are different lengths and the shortest should be installed towards the front. All my crossbars were the same length and there are a couple that don't seat all the way down. The nylon/plastic handles seem pretty flimsy if you torque down too much when attaching the cross bars to the cage. I did expect some wind noise however, the wind noise is INSANE from buffeting against the soft top. So much so that we did not want to drive the vehicle for very long at highway speeds. The installation of a wind deflector does help out a bit, however it may get on the drivers nerves over time. We will see. We are using the Yakima Jaylow kayak mounts and they attach directly to the cross bars. This may add to the wind noise but we have not had the opportunity to try it out yet. I would recommend this to someone who has a hardtop or runs around with a bikini top or no top on their Jeep. Otherwise I don't know if I would recommend this for full soft top Jeeps. UPDATE August 2023: Due to the wind buffering associated with installing this on a soft top Jeep, this rack has been removed and is currently sitting in my garage. Follow the instructions. I attached to frame in rear, not Jeep body metal (drill holes). Kits has parts so you can do either. I think attaching to frame is stronger but it did mean I had to buy aftermarket rear bumper. I did not realize the stock rear bumper is not a bumper at all, just a big piece of plastic. This rack is sturdy, economical easy to install if you know what a wrench is and I love it. ... show more

Install wasn’t the easiest but it’s held up great over these past 6 months. Hasn’t rusted it all like I’ve seen on other reviews but I live in the desert of Colorado so that’s probably why. Great deal for the price point.

    • Great rack easy to install
Very impressed with the rack. Holds a rooftop tent and me and my wife with ease. Took about an hour and a half to install with Just myself and some basic tools to do it. Very happy with my purchase.

    • Not my first roof rack
Already several good videos out there for installs and reviews. Many consider this a budget or medium budget rack. Time will tell for me. One thing is for sure - this rack is not made by SB - and other manufacturers have it branded as well. It's made in China. So do your research - SB may not be the least expensive option for this rack. If you have a JK Gen2 XRC rear bumper - 76858 - and you want to do a frame mount - plan on cutting 2.25 inches off your bumper. In hindsight it would have been best to remove the bumper to do this. No issues - it just took longer. I've read issues with water getting into the tubes. Black RTV should help mitigate that. I will see how that works out... 6 mounting places for crossbars - only 4 are included - you can shop around and find extras. But this leaves 2 sets of exposed holes - see RTV above. Like my last frame mounted roof rack - the rear bar makes it difficult to open the fuel cap cover. I drilled a small hole in the lip last time and use para cord with knots to make a pull. Overall I am happy after finishing this install - it may take you way more than the quoted install time if you run into issues like I did with the bumper. Instructions are the same for any of the "brands" of this rack... and they are very typical of their source... go through a couple videos before you install... it may be well worth it. Well machined and all parts lined up well. Assembly was simple and installation was smooth, a two person job if you are attaching to the body of the Jeep but not required if you install and assemble as you go, don't try this with a fully assembled unit. A value compared to the price on other sires.
