A dual compartment step recycler for kitchens that take recycling seriously. simplehuman's 46L rectangular step recycler pairs two inner buckets in a space-efficient shape — one side for trash, one side for recycling, sort as you go. simplehuman's patented Lid Shox® technology controls the motion of the lid for a slow, silent close every time, and the strong steel pedal is engineered for 150,000 steps — more than 20 steps a day for 20 years. The lid stays open hands-free for longer chores like meal prep and unloading groceries. Both removable inner buckets are made from 100% post- consumer recycled plastic and lift out for easy disposal, quick liner changes, and cleaning. The brushed stainless steel surface is protected by simplehuman's invisible silver-ion coating. Perhaps my darkest secret is the fact that I paid this much for a garbage can. What does that say about me as a person? While I have no terrifying deeds in my past, the fact that I would pay this much for a garbage can, means my judgement is probably questionable. WHATEVER! This can is absolutely amazing! It's a smooth operator that puts my old rubbermaid to shame. I feed it mostly recyclables, and the smaller trash compartment is perfect for us and our small space. While the manufacturer recommends using their bags, I can't justify the cost. I know, "you already spent a million dollars on the can", but I may be crazy, but I'm no lunatic. Costco 13 gallon bags work just fine. Alright, I want to be honest with you... I used a $100 dollar gift card that I got for my 40th birthday from my mother. There, I said it. Do I feel better? This is exactly what I was looking for. This can is compact, very functional, and very well built. It looks 1000 times better than my old can and doesn't scoot around on my laminate floors and mark up my wall like the old one. It is definitely worth every penny. The only problem is an existential one...I just spent $150 on a trash can and was genuinely excited when it was delivered to my door. What happened to the young man that spent his dollars on booze, trendy clothes, and video games? Replaced by a man that reads reviews on trash cans online, comparing warranties and features. A warranty? On a trash can? For God's sake... Then there is the giddy excitement when his expensive waste receptacle finally arrives, punctuated by the time spent writing another review for some poor soul like me. The media could not be loaded. We just unboxed our new trash can and we're super excited about it. At first we were unsure about paying this much for a "trash can" but I'm glad we did. The thought process that went into designing this trash can really exceeds our expectations. Pro: Stylish. Flat back so it's flushed to the wall (space saver). Silent close lid. Lid lock switch to keep the lid open. 'Bucket park' makes it easy to change bags 10 year warranty Con: Not exactly 100% FINGERPRINT-PROOF. You have to push the the lid back with your hand to wedge the 'lock switch' under to stay open (not a big deal) ... show more

As an aside before I start - that headline describes my love life perfectly. I bought this trashcan because it looked attractive, had roughly the right dimensions for the available space, and seemed to come with a host of welcome quality-of-life improvements over my old trashcan. Happily, this trashcan met my hopes and expectations on all 3 counts. Unhappily, there's one MAJOR problem with the trashcan, one that never even entered my mind as a possible consideration when I bought it - IT DOESN'T CLOSE! Since day 1 of ownership there's been an ever-changing gap between the lid and the body. The size of the gap varies based on the trashcan's current mood, and as it's actually behaving itself right now it's only about 1.5 centimeters (which you can see in the photo), but I've seen it get closer to 3 centimeters when it gets particularly upset. Now, you may think a centimeter or two is nothing to worry about, and you're right in the grand scheme of things, but remember that the smell of putrefaction and flies doesn't need much of a helping hand to move in with you. I also think you'd be less sanguine about this whole affair if you had just spent $100 on a trashcan and every time you take the trash bag out you inevitably wake up the next morning to the scent garbage and the (admittedly somewhat impressive) recolonization efforts of the flies, gnats, and the various other winged brethren which now call your house their home. I think it goes without saying that I don't think you or anyone should buy this trashcan. Finally, to be fair, I did get about 3 or 4 open-close cycles out of the lid before the trashcan made its eternal pledge to never close again. Lord knows that's not much, but i thought I should mention that it wasn't terrible from the moment I opened the box. ... show more
