I’ve been using this simplehuman 13-gal semi-round can in my kitchen for about two weeks and it’s been fantastic. The pedal is smooth and requires a reasonable amount of force — not floppy but not stiff — which makes one-foot opening easy while holding something in both hands. The semi-round shape fits snugly against the wall and under my counter, which saves space compared to a round can. The liner rim clip is a small but huge quality-of-life feature: garbage bags stay hidden and don’t slip down when I toss heavier items. The finish is durable — after a few knocks it still looks new — and the secure slide lock is a good touch when transporting the can or keeping pets/kids from opening it. A couple small things: the plastic lid feels lighter than the metal versions I’ve owned, so if you’re after that premium steel look this isn’t it — but functionally the lid seals well and helps contain odors. I never thought i’d say this but I’m very pleased and impressed with this trashcan purchase. I specifically needed a “dog proof” garbage bc our little 18lbs Bichon just can’t help himself when he is alone and tears at the can liner bag edges until he knocks it over. One too many messes and eventually we stopped having a garbage can in the actual house (it was moved to the garage) and have been using plastic grocery bags placed so graciously on the counter and taken to the outside bin at night. I had bought myself an automatic one for my bathroom- another trash can he is obsessed with bc my daughter uses pads and I think you get the picture. Dogs love all body fluids 🤦🏻♀️ He hasn’t really figured it out yet, but we also basically stopped leaving pads in there at all, and the automated part is kinda cool so that’s initially what I wanted to get for the kitchen. I was dreading the battery powered lid getting knocked over and tossed around. I was imagining the possible scenarios and eventually leaned away from that bc common sense says getting something more fragile isn’t a good idea knowing it will take abuse by an animal. After literal hours looking around.. I really liked the way this one sounded.. and I realized that a step pedal would probably suit my needs better.. plus it probably won’t break ever.. so in the end I decided this was probably a safer bet. It got here and I was pretty impressed. My old 13 gallon was dwarfed next to this. I didn’t even notice the hook in the back, which is perfect bc there is this hook on etsy that would fit perfect and basically screws the garbage to a wall so the dog can’t move it, but I decided to wait on that unless it’s needed. update: so we’ve had this maybe two weeks and a few days ago my mom was cooking and using the garbage.. with Bruno watching 🤣.. so after seeing what is actually was.. that night he finally made his move. He knocked it over and I hadn’t yet decided to keep it locked bc I wasn’t sure if I needed to. Because he is so intelligent sometimes, I have this tendency of giving him too much credit and it’s easy to forget he’s still just a dog. So I picked up the mess and told everyone it’s gotta stay locked all the time period no excuses..or you’re cleaning it up. Want to guess what woke me up this morning dramatically crying in front of the garbage can they knocked over but couldn’t get into? He knocked it over a few more times today, so by now he should get the hint that it’s no longer accessible to him, but we are still going to keep it locked bc he’s more than likely going to still try sometimes. I can’t say enough good things about this trashcan! and the best part is it does what it says !! update again: Lmao so again, this morning I woke up to an almost rhythmic banging noise. I was so confused when I first woke up that I didn’t actually get up,. I just listened to the sounds. then I realized it was my dog and the garbage again! I went downstairs and he has it wedged between couches (he dragged it everywhere😭) and I can only guess what the banging was. Him jumping? His hind legs? No idea but it was HILARIOUS 🤣 He had tore at the bag and there were easily over 100 little pieces of bag everywhere but the can was still closed. He could not get it open !! I wish I took a video or even a pic, but I was half asleep. Everyone reading this probably has a dog, so I don’t have to tell you how smart your dog is. Or maybe is not.. but you know how smart dogs can be. He is not physically capable of producing motions or movements that would cause this to open in any way. If dogs had opposable thumbs, it would 100% be open. I am just so over the moon happy but he cannot get to it and the trash is actually safe, and nothing he does will get this change that. Fantastic product like I am in awe of how such a simple design works so efficiently.

I use13 gal kitchen draw string bags-I like that you don't have to pull out an inner can to change bags. It's so easy to put a bag in and just pull down around the rim. The bag fits snug and stays there. Then its easy to pull off. Also you don't have to use the pedal all the time. You can open it manually too.

I never leave reviews, but this was probably one of the best purchases we’ve ever made. We have a 90 pound lab who is extremely persistent. He’s escaped from a large metal crate before… He has tried several times to get into this can while we were gone with no success.

This trashcan started off great. Our dog stayed out of it. It holds a lot of trash without having to shove it down, it contains any smells, it has a foot pedal to open or you can prop it up and keep the lid open. I have love this!! It is pretty hard to open too, but we have dealt with it because it kept the dog out. However, somehow my dog was able to get the lid open today. I have NO CLUE how my 50 pound beagle did it. We left for ten minutes and the lock was still pushed in. We know for sure it was latched because we saw him sniffing around it before we left so we made sure the lid was locked. Hoping it doesn’t happen again because I’m not sure what we will do if it does. Our dog is a senior and only recently started getting in the trash. Overall it’s really a great trashcan. Maybe it was a fluke I don’t know. We have had no other issues and have had it for about two months.
