  • Great charger, great company.
If you're going to spend the extra money to upgrade to a Shorai battery, there's no sense in cheaping out when it comes to the charger. I just had a horrible experience at a shop where the tech who replaced the fork seals on my bike left my lights on when he was finished and completely killed my battery. Even though this was the result of somebody else's mistake and not the fault of a defective battery, Shorai still treated it as a warranty issue and shipped me a brand new battery. Incredible customer service. The paperwork specifically states that the warranty is voided under such circumstances but they treated me right. I never expected them to send me a brand new battery, but I hoped they might empathize with my situation and give me a discount. The cost of this charger, while not cheap, is less expensive than what I planned to pay for a replacement battery and I was happy to spend the money on this unit after the way they treated me. In regards to some of the negatives I've read in other customer reviews, it is true that the connections don't feel particularly sturdy. That said, this unit will only be used when the bike is stationary in my garage so I don't need it to be particularly rugged. The cable that connects the charger to your wall outlet is very short but if you have a surge protector strip, that will likely provide the extra length you'll need. Otherwise, you'll just have to park your vehicle very close to your outlet. The retractable hook is perfect for keeping the charger off the floor. Once it's plugged into the outlet and connected to your battery, simply press whichever of the two buttons is appropriate to your needs, "Store" or "Charge". The "Charge" mode should only have to be used once a year, according to the customer service rep I spoke with. I leave my bike connected in "Store" mode whenever I'm finished riding. This isn't necessary if your bike has no parasitic draw when turned off but, if you have accessories connected that might suck juice from the battery when it's off, the "Store" mode will keep you charged at around 80% at all times while also performing diagnostic and conditioning tasks on the battery. In either mode, the unit gives a loud series of beeps to let you know when it's finished doing what it needs to do. That's it. Connect it and press one button, depending on what you want to do. Couldn't be any easier. An added benefit that I didn't consider when I bought this is that it connects to your battery via a proprietary input on the battery itself, eliminating the need to have an SAE pigtail wired directly to your battery terminals. If you have multiple accessories connected to your battery, you might find that you need to use longer bolts to accommodate all of these things. Plugging a cable into a port on the battery saves you this problem. I've noticed that many different battery manufacturers are making their own chargers and saying that only theirs should be used with their batteries. A lot of it seems hokey to me, like a money grab, but the lithium technology is relatively new and I'm not going to take any chances. These batteries are fundamentally different than their lead acid counterparts so I'm going to trust the company that makes the battery to make the device that keeps the battery in the best possible condition. ... show more

  • 4-star review, 5-star support.
Just a quick review here. [See why I gave 4 and not 5 stars at the bottom.] I did a lot of research on battery types and different chargers available out there. For $20 less I almost went with the 'ol Battery Tender Plus but after researching the Shorai battery and Shorai battery charger I decided against it. Here's why: sure the Battery Tender Plus will work and it even has a "float" mode to prevent overcharging but what Shorai's charger does which the others don't is monitor the voltage, current and charge rate of each individual cell inside the battery. This ensures each cell stays matched to the other adjacent cells within the cluster. This is hugely important to a battery of this type (well for any modern rechargeable batteries really) and will insure the battery stays healthy for a long time. So why 4 and not 5 stars? 4 is not a "bad" rating at all. Its just not perfect, and in this particular review its more of heads-up for those looking to buy. When my charger arrived it came with two of the same adapter cables. This was clearly a packaging mistake from Shorai and not Amazon. I emailed Shorai that very night just to confirm it was a mistake and not something I was overlooking. Shorai's customer support emailed me back the following morning with a very friendly message explaining that the two cables I got were both "extension" cables and definitely a packaging mistake on their end. I had the proper cable coming 2-day delivery at no charge. My experience with this battery charger, and more importantly Shorai's support, has been nothing short of 5-stars. Just be informed that you may not end up with the correct set of cables.. but without a doubt Shorai will make it right. Also its worth noting (because it wasn't entirely obvious to me, especially with my cable mix up). In the product image, the adapter cable on the LEFT is the "extension cable" but it doesnt look like what's shown in the image. It looks more like this: Shorai (SHO-BMSCBL12) 12V Extension Cable This is meant to leave permanently plugged into the battery with the rubber cap end secured and tucked away on your bike. The cable on the right plugged into the charger is the one I was missing (I got sent two of the extension ones). This plugs either directly into the charger and battery or from the charger to the loose end of the extension cable. At any rate, even without the proper cable I was still able to charge the battery with the extension cable while my other cable arrived in the mail. ... show more
