Description

SHELF LIFE Celebrating Vitality, Embracing Mortality At some point, you will inevitably face the end of your existence in this dimension. Does the thought of your "expiration date" cause you angst or fear? Though seemingly at opposite ends of the spectrum, life and death are inextricably intertwined. Confronting death and seeking a deeper understanding of its implications, challenges, and nuances lends equanimity to the fear of dying and invites us to live vibrantly, grow in unique ways, forge new trails, and discover untapped potential.SHELF LIFE was born of an introspective and interactive graduate-level course on mortality, which the author created and taught at St. Mary’s University in Minneapolis, Chautauqua Institution in upstate New York, and other lifelong-learning organizations. An intimate, engaging memoir, SHELF LIFE is also a lucid guide to thriving in life's Third Act while befriending the inevitable. Read more

  • Very poignant read!
Format: Paperback
“Shelf Life: Celebrating Vitality, Embracing Mortality” is a profound exploration of life's most inevitable journey: mortality! As a healthcare professional, I found this book not only relevant but incredibly enriching. The author's blend of poignant anecdotes, insightful reflections, and practical advice creates a narrative that resonates deeply with anyone navigating the complexities of mortality, especially those in the healthcare field. One of the book's most compelling aspects is its balance between confronting the reality of death and celebrating the vitality of life. Through a plethora of quotes about mortality (ex. “Life isn’t able waiting for the storm to pass. It’s learning to dance in the rain” – Vivian Greene) and sometimes humorous and sometimes sobering personal anecdotes, the author seamlessly weaves together a tapestry of emotions, prompting laughter and tears in equal measure. What sets this book apart is its deeply personal and eclectic approach to talking about death (from the author’s own grappling with writing her obituary, to reflections from her students, to helpful provocative questions, poems, and photography). Drawing from her experiences as a college professor teaching a course on mortality in Minneapolis and at the Chautauqua Institution, the author shares intimate stories of her own journey and those of her loved ones and communities. These narratives not only serve to illuminate the universal human experience of mortality but also provide invaluable insights for healthcare professionals grappling with these issues on a daily basis. Moreover, “Shelf Life: Celebrating Vitality, Embracing Mortality” offers practical suggestions for preparing for one's eventual ending while embracing the vitality of everyday life. From end-of-life planning to finding meaning in the face of mortality, the author offers a roadmap for navigating life's most profound questions with grace and authenticity. Overall, this book is a must-read for anyone, but especially those in the healthcare field. It offers a refreshingly honest and compassionate perspective on mortality, reminding us to cherish the precious gift of life while preparing for its inevitable end. This book has left an indelible mark on me, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to all! “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” – Mary Oliver ... show more

  • Very insightful
Format: Paperback
As a licensed therapist, I see an epidemic of uncertainty ramping among us leading to poor decision making and painful consequences. What if we could live with our fears in the backseat, not in the drivers seat? What if we accepted that we can choose how we live and make peace with the fact that our time is limited? What if we embraced life AND death? Living well and dying well...that is what the author Norma Schuh offers in her witty, insightful and profound memoir. Well done Norma 👏. ... show more

  • A Well Thought-Out and Informative Book!
Format: Paperback
I highly recommend “Shelf Life” if you have an interest in living the rest of your life to the fullest while making friends with your inevitable demise. "Shelf Life" is a thought-provoking, inspiring, and at times humorous book about our vitality (Carpe Diem) and our inevitable mortality (Memento Mori). It is chock-full of wonderfully motivating ideas for how we can live our remaining lives in the best way possible, and how to look at our own mortality with an eye towards being comfortable with the topic, preparing for our inevitable future, what actions we need to take to ensure that we are not a burden for those we leave behind when we die and a myriad of options that I never knew about or had even considered for how I want the end of my end of life to be. I was impressed by the wealth of research that must have gone into writing this book, yet it is presented in such a creative and personal way that I felt I was having this conversation with a close friend! ... show more
