  • Very very impressive vacuum!
Color: Green
First off, I'm not here to bash Dyson. I've had 4 over the years, and my girlfriend has had 2. They are very good vacuums but I finally decided my brand loyalty only went so far. To wit: they always worked great at first, but then seemed to develop some issues. Our most recent Dyson, a DC 65 Animal, was a beast out of the box then slowly started having a harder and harder time picking up cat hair and little flecks of dirt. Then the brush roller broke and I replaced it. Well, it just recently quit turning AGAIN so I said enough... I'm gonna find out just what this whole Shark thing is about. As an aside, besides brand loyalty I probably also avoided Sharks because Dyson just seems so fancy. The dude is all Euro-sounding and seems like he eats, sleeps, and breaths vacuum cleaners. I almost expect he spends all his time in a monastery exploring the mysteries of carpet cleaning. Whereas Shark is the infomercial guy who's all smiles and constantly trying to compare themselves to.... Dyson. So I just always figured Dyson must be superior. Anyways, so this Shark Apex DuoClean arrived today (model AX951) and I vacuumed the whole house. Wow. This thing is darned impressive for a vacuum cleaner. Fit and finish are excellent, thing goes together in like 30 seconds if that. Everything felt solid, well made, and just nicely engineered. I already like the idea of the canister being removable so you can easily get under chairs and beds and whatnot. Think I'm gonna really dig that feature (plus for carrying it around when cleaning blinds and ceiling fans and whatnot. Just seems handy, though admittedly I haven't used it that much yet). Second, it is QUIET. I mean seriously, compared to my Dysons this thing is a whisper. Now *obviously* no vacuum is quiet in the sense of library quiet, but relatively speaking it is amazing compared to every other vacuum I've ever owned. And it's also different. Whatever they did to the sound output, it doesn't really sound like a vacuum. Best way I can describe it is like a slightly louder version of the ambient noise you hear when flying in a commercial jet. That sort of droning and humming sound. Just maybe twice as loud. It's really weird at first cause you're not expecting it, but it's VERY nice. The true test? Our little terror dog didn't bark or attack the thing once. I was shocked. She normally barks and tries to bite all of the Dysons we have owned. She just cocked her head and looked at this one kinda strange, like she wasn't sure what to do. Maybe she just doesn't like Euro-sounding guys? haha … nah, the thing was just that quiet. And lastly... and (duh) most importantly... cleaning. The thing worked fantastic. Before the brush roller broke on my Dyson, I was able to vacuum the living and dining rooms. This was 2 days ago. Today when the Shark arrived I went ahead and vacuumed them again, and the canister was half-full. Huzzah! I then did the rest of the house and the canister was absolutely packed. Carpets look fantastic. I Love it. The lights are actually pretty cool, and the thing is very easy to maneuver. Very easy, actually. Now... that said, I've read some people say it tries to pull forward pretty hard and so pulling it back can be a bit of an effort. My reply? Yep, absolutely true. And frankly, I like that. It means the brush is really digging into the carpet and getting up all the nasties. So one caveat to this vacuum is I wouldn't get it for an 85 year old grandma, or someone with serious arm/shoulder problems... but any average person in average shape is going to have no problem with this thing. At first you might feel it's resisting you some, but by the time I was done vacuuming the house I wasn't even thinking about it anymore. I have obviously only used this thing the one time, so I can't say much about longevity and durability, but a lot of other reviews have stated the thing holds up so I'm confident in mine. And if it does, and continues to perform like it did today, holy cow... I'm sold on Shark. I normally give infomercial products a skeptical eye, but this thing is the real deal and I'm very happy I took a chance on it. EDIT: Ok, now I've used this several times and I still love it, but I will add one little nitpick. If you're going to base your product on always comparing yourself to Dyson, then make the freaking power cord as long as a Dyson's. haha... 30 feet versus 35 feet doesn't sound like a huge difference, but it's definitely noticeable. After using a Dyson for so long I've gotten adjusted to how far the cords can go and which plugs I need to use. This one being 5 feet shorter is obviously just a First World Problem and I get that, but it is kind of annoying because why just arbitrarily make it 5 feet shorter than the company you are always comparing yourself to? Oh well... other than that, still loving it! ... show more

  • Limited use
Color: Green
Edit: we bought this in February and now being June, the motor goes out mid use. I had just cleaned out the filter and dumped everything out. As I’m cleaning the stairs, the motor fades out and dies. It was really hot so I took everything I possibly could off of it, but can’t seem to get to the motor because I need a special tool. Same as an Allen wrench but with a spike in the middle so an Allen wrench won’t work. Was a great vacuum when it worked as you can see below. If you want to spend $300 every few months, it’s the perfect vacuum. Just unfortunate that we got rid of our previous vacuum that was poor quality but more durable. We've had the same vacuum for 6 years, so when we switched to this, it was a game changer. It was almost too powerful at first, but is amazing for cleaning up dog hair. We have carpet and hardwood, and the Shark is adaptable to both with a little switch on the handle by your thumb. The vacuum comes apart in 4 different sections which is great. You can lift out the collector, take off the handle section, remove the middle plastic hose, and the brushroll at the bottom. This makes it very easy to clean stairs as well since you can hook the handle to the brushroll and carry the collector as you go. Used to take me 15 minutes, now takes me 5. I can't say enough great things about this vacuum! ... show more

  • Be careful where you vacuum, it WILL suck it up.
Color: Green
The amount of suction that this vacuum provides should not be underrated. Granted, I went from a $50 Dirt Devil to this, but the difference was more than I would have believed. I find the overall experience with this vacuum to be much more pleasant. The noise reduction technology really works, there is no high pitched whine and I can hold a conversation with my wife while vacuuming. I have found that one of my favorite features has also gotten me into trouble. The front brush pulls everything under so that it can get sucked into the canister, and it is a feature I was looking for since my entire family are major pop-corn eaters. The old vacuum would push the fallen pieces around on the floor and I ended up having to pick them up by hand; not so with this one. However, I have found that I had developed the habit of pushing kids toys and clothing out of the way with the old vacuum, which is obviously a bad habit when there is no bumper. Having all of the controls on the handle is very nice. I can seamlessly switch from the carpet, onto the linoleum, and then vacuum a rug without pausing. Having the power switch right next to your thumb is also great for when you inadvertently get something caught in the brushes, it takes a good deal less time to power down. I have found that this vacuum is significantly heavier than my old one, and when you combine that with its tremendous power, it really lunges forward like it is self propelled. I actually found my arm being somewhat fatigued by the end of a session. If you are petite or generally have trouble wrangling heavier things, be warned the weight will be felt, but I feel the cleaning power is well worth it. Pros: Powerful Heavy Duty Controls on the handle Duo Brush Fantastic on hard floors (and carpet) LED lights actually help you see what you are doing Quiet Good, Easy-to-clean filters Powered lift away is amazing for stairs HEPA filtration Good attachments Ability to turn Cons: Heavy Expensive (for me) ... show more
