  • This is a very good chair, so far
Color: Black & White
If a chair lasts me 5 years, it's a good chair. I can spend upwards of 14 hours a day, seven days a week in my desk chair. I do IT support and even when I'm not working I'm sitting in my chair at my desk waiting for a call. I own the company and I own the office and my office is pretty nice so I spend a lot of time in it working or not. It's on my property in a detached building and I serve all the network, entertainment, etc. stuff for the main house from there so while I may not be working I'm often at my desk watching a movie or TV show on a 60 inch plasma monitor. I also have two crushed disks and two herniated disks in my back from an offshore accident many years ago. It is vital that I have a very good chair at my desk. I'm in this chair a LOT. I'm 6 feet tall and weigh 230 lbs so that is a LOT of wear and tear on a chair over time. The last chair I had was an Office Star Space Chair and it was a good chair, for about 2.5 years. Then it started falling apart and I started filing warranty claims to get the parts replaced that failed (it was warrantied for 5 years). The vinyl arm pads deteriorated twice and the seat/pedestal plate that holds the seat together snapped in half. It made it the whole 5 years with warranty replacements, but the Office Star manufacturer wised up and cancelled the warranty (just flat changed it and refused to honor the original warranty) on all padded and vinyl components so when the arm pads fell apart again it was time to go find a new chair that is NOT an Office Star product ... I did a lot of shopping. I don't like buying chairs and I don't want to get a chair that won't fulfill the things I need it to do. It took almost two months from the time I decided I needed a new chair to the time I ordered this Serta. I went to office furniture stores, I pored over online office furniture sites, I sat in chairs and I did just about all the due diligence a person could do in choosing my next chair. The reason I told you all the things in the first paragraph is so that you'll understand how important having a good chair is to me. The reason I'm telling you these things is so that you'll understand how careful I was in choosing this chair. I ordered this chair, it came and I put it together today. I knew it would be comfortable because I sat in the same chair at an Office Depot, but they wanted $100 more for that chair than I paid for this one. If I hadn't found this one on Amazon (or other online vendor) cheaper, I was going to go back to the store and pay that $100 more because of all the chairs I had sat in, that Serta was the most comfortable. I love this chair. It is one of the very most comfortable chairs I have ever sat at a desk in, maybe even THE most comfortable. It adjusts for tilt tension, tilt lock, height and lumbar support plus it swivels. The lumbar support is especially nice, it's a little knob on the right side of the seat that you can turn to increase or decrease the support mechanism in the backrest. I'm a pretty big guy and this chair is solid as a rock. There is no wobble or shift or anything wrong with this chair. I can only think that the reviewer who reported that the chair was "flimsy" was either too heavy for what this chair is rated, put it together wrong, or got a lemon. Or any or all of those faults combined. There's nothing flimsy about the construction of this chair when it's assembled correctly. Regarding correct assembly, follow the instructions included. The instructions are easy to understand and they're easily adequate to correctly assemble the chair. I had to use a magnifying glass but my eyes aren't what they used to be, most people can probably read the instructions just fine. They're clear and in proper English so the Chinese or whoever is responsible for the instruction booklet got it right. Which is unusual for things being made in China these days. Tighten up the screws as much as you can without stripping the threads or torquing a head off. It is vital with any chair that it be assembled as tightly as possible to prevent undesirable play in the parts. Things should not wiggle when you put a chair like this together, they should never wiggle after you assemble and use the chair. If you get wiggle or wobble then tighten it up again or it will break. I used a wrench, a ratchet with the proper sized hex driver -- not the little wrench that comes with the chair. There is locktite on the screws that will activate when the screws are good and tight, the more tension on the threads the more solid that locktite will be. I don't know if they used real "Locktite" brand thread locker but the color of this locker is red. If it's real Locktite, red is a permanent thread locker that requires heating with a torch to get it to release. Basically you have to melt it to free it. If that's what this thread locker is, then make sure you get everything tight the first time or you're going to have problems sooner or later. One of the main reasons I bought this chair, besides the comfort factor, is the 10 year warranty. Comfort is nothing if the chair doesn't last, durability is nothing if the chair isn't comfortable. It does no good to have a sturdy chair that's not comfortable or a comfortable chair that's broken. Those two things, comfort and durability, are the mark of a really good chair. Those two features are what will make this chair worth it's cost or not. I don't write a review on something like this and then forget it. If there's anything to add I'll come back and edit this review so if it doesn't last, you'll know it from reading my edits. If you don't see any edits to this review then you can assume all is well with the chair and it has held up well from the date I posted this review to the date you read it. ... show more

  • Excellent Computer Chair under $250
Color: Black & White
Excellent, well put together and comfortable computer chair, at a darn good price! I did my homework by going to all the local stores and checking out the computer chairs and to make a long story short, I settled on this Serta and after a month, I am certainly glad I did. It is well made and the leather is not that super soft cheap bonded leather that will peal off in a year, but rather a very good bonded leather that's looks good and sits good. I found this chair at a couple of local stores for $317 and up and I just fell in love with it, especially since I have had 8 back surgeries and I need something that will support me with comfort and it also has an adjustable lumbar support, which I use and it makes a world of difference. I believe this chair will hold up a lot longer than my last chair, which was supposed to be the thing, but it wasn't. Also, after my wife told me to read the instructions, mostly her, but she and I put it together with no problems in less than an hour, It is not that difficult, I was mostly the helper, but as long as I sat down, then my back did not give me too much of a problem. The reason is I am in chronic pain and can hardly do much of anything, but with a little help from me love of 43 years, it was rather easy to put together! Once put together, the chair sits on a pneumatic pedestal and does have a very little play, but hardly enough to make the chair lean when you sit in it and relax to use the PC and I weigh 247 lbs. All in All, I recommend this chair highly, especially the price. If something goes out of wack later, I will come back and revise my feedback, but so far everything is great and seems like it will continue to go that way for a good while. ENJOY!! ... show more

  • Nice chair - Serta quality
Color: Black & White
We bought this chair as a replacement for our old one as the pneumatics would no longer work. My husband is a large man and this chair is only rated for 250 pounds. I'd searched all over and couldn't find the weight tolerance in the manufacturer's description and believed somebody's review here that it was 400 pounds. So far so good however. We've been using it for 5 months and the pneumatics are still good. The chair itself is comfortable - once you get yourself situated. The cushioning is the best I've ever seen in an office chair. I have to hold myself up on the arms and scooch back. The depth of the seat is just a tad too long for me to be able to just sit and be at the back of the chair. It does have a lumbar support adjustment, which is nice. I don't like the way the back is not at a straight up angle and there seems to be no way to fix that. I don't like sitting in a semi-reclining position when I'm on the computer. That's probably just me. I probably would not buy this chair again, given what I know now and the price I paid for it. I believe I've run across other chairs since then for a cheaper price that truly are made for a "big" person. UPDATE: Well, we've been using this chair for almost 3 years now. The pneumatics are still very good. There is a little bit of loss in holding power, but not much. My biggest disappointment is the pseudo-leather upholstery. While the chair has a 10-year warranty, the fabric does not. 3 years into ownership, with gentle use, the pleather has started peeling off of the backing on the seat. I now have to deal with little pieces of black all over my floor. The chair itself is still comfortable and working well, but..... I use this in a home situation, not a business. ... show more

  • Broke after 6 months of moderate use; buy something else if you want quality.
Color: Black & White
When I first received this chair, I knew right away that it wasn't going to last very long. The back support and seat are secured together by plastic arm rails that are screwed into the side using threaded inserts. I've owned a few "similar" chairs and they typically survive 3 or 5 years before the arms/supports break at/near the screw holes. However, due to supply shortages and delivery times (COVID), I decided to keep it instead of returning to Amazon. The chair was very comfortable at first. It's labeled as "Serta" although the manufacturer is located in China and obviously licenses the name "Serta". Please do not associate the "Serta" brand with quality as it is known for in the US. The chair came in a huge box that was beat up by the delivery company. The contents were loosely/poorly packaged inside with a bunch of cardboard, thin foam and tape to keep it all "together". Everything arrived without visible damage, but poor/inadequate packaging is sometimes an indicator of product quality. Everything was easy to assemble and it came with adequate instructions and hardware to do so. I replaced the plastic caster with aftermarket "rollerblade" style casters because our floors are susceptible to scratching with the latter. The upgraded casters makes the chair glide smoother and feel more "premium". I wish manufacturers would start including these casters with all chairs. After a few months of moderate use, I noticed the back rest starting to sag a little. I checked/tightened the screws and adjusted the spring so that it had a bit more tension and didn't recline as easy. It seemed to be better, but not perfect. Today, (~6 months after purchase) the chair completely failed and the back support broke away suddenly. I was thrown to the floor and the office got a good laugh at my expense (haha, very funny). The point of failure was the threaded insert/bracket used to attach the arm rests to the seat on the right side. It had completely broke on the inside and sheered through the fabric on the outside exposing the insides. I went to Amazon to read the reviews and noticed a number of buyers having similar issues with the same bracket. Coincidence? Maybe not... Is the seat comfortable? Yes, it's very comfortable. The padding is nicer/softer than most chairs at a comparable price. Does the seat look nice? Yes, although the white/tan accent fabric is prone to discoloration over time. Is the seat durable? No, mine only lasted ~6 months before it failed. Is there a product warranty? No, the manufacturer is not actually "Serta" and is located in China. Good luck trying to contact them. For the record, I'm a 6'0 225lbs adult that uses a computer/chair 3 - 4 hours a day, 5 days a week. If a user were smaller and/or used the chair less, it might last years instead of months. I would not recommend the chair either way as I have ~$75 "office supply company" branded chairs that are still functional after 10 years. ... show more

  • Comfortable, easy to assemble, but arrived slightly damaged.
Color: Black & White
Overall the chair is decent; however, for the price, I expected a better build quality in the seat base. It's a bit too narrow and there's a bit of side-to-side wiggle that I fear will hurt its long-term durability. In terms of the shipping. It arrived a day sooner than expected, which is great, especially given the current pandemic environment; however, it was damaged...but not through shipping, it was clearly packaged and shipped this way. The legs were carefully wrapped in foam and plastic; however, two of the 5 legs were greatly scratched in the plastic/rubber caps near the end (over the casters). In addition to this damage, there were several scratches on the painted metal portion of the arms, deep grooves in fact. These too were packaged quite well and were clearly not damaged while shipped, but rather, sent from the factory that way. Could I have received a reconditioned or refurbished item? Overall, the chair's function is not impacted and the damage is cosmetic. While I am deeply disappointed and upset at the price I paid for a damaged item, It's not worth the effort to disassemble and re-pack the chair to return. I will use it and hopefully it will remain comfortable for longer than I expect. The seat and back are plush and the lumbar support is decent. My only wish, in terms of design, is if the seat back's angle was also adjustable. I would prefer to adjust it up to a full 90 degrees at times (when working, for example). Overall, if you can get this chair on sale or at a discount, it's a good buy... but whether or not you get a non-damaged item, your guess is as good as mine. ... show more

  • and it's exactly what I hoped it would be - comfortable! So here's the deal
Color: Black & White
I just got this chair yesterday, and it's exactly what I hoped it would be - comfortable! So here's the deal...I'm 5'3", and I work from home, so I'm in my desk chair for 8+ hours a day (minus the occasional break, of course). My old chair was some cheap thing I've had for so long, I can't even remember when I bought it, and it was starting to cause me lower back pain. So, I was looking for something that would be comfortable all day and hold up long-term. I browsed chairs online at several sites, and then I realized I really needed to go to a store and try some out before making a purchase. I went to Office Max since they sell Serta chairs. They didn't have this exact model, but they had the "Big & Tall version." I sat in that and realized the seat and cushioning were very comfortable, but the seat was a little too deep for me. I couldn't reach the back rest without scooting way back, and I wouldn't be able to work/type in that position. So, I figured out what seat depth was comfortable for me by trying out other chairs, noted the measurements, then came home and compared it to the measurements of this chair. The seat depth was exactly what I wanted, so I ordered this chair. It arrived last night, and I had to put it together ASAP. My 8 year old daughter "helped," but honestly, this chair was very easy to put together without assistance. I'm sitting in it right now, and I can already feel a huge difference between this and my old chair. It's night and day! The seat is soft, and my back actually touches the back rest (which didn't happen in my old chair). The lumbar adjustment option is nice. I never really use the arms, but they are nice and padded. I'm really impressed by this chair as it seems like they've thought of everything! Of course, the longevity will now be put to the test, but the chair seems constructed well, so I'm hoping to get many years out of it. So here's my advice. If you're over 5'5", if you have long legs, or if you prefer a deep seat, I would definitely go with the Big & Tall version of this chair as I don't think you'll find this version comfortable. However, for us shorter people, this chair is awesome! ... show more

  • Super Comfortable Seat With Sturdy Construciton
Color: Black & White
One of the most comfortable chairs I have ever sat in. The seat is so thick, with multiple layers of foam as well as springs like you might see in a mattress. I'm hoping that all of these layers and the springs will mean that the seat will not flatten out as quick as most chairs do - only time will tell. One of the things that really bothers me about office chairs is how they all start off so fluffy in the seat and then after a few months all the foam is paper thin and you're just sitting on a flat board. I originally purchased this for my home office and I found it so comfortable that I bought another one for work. If you shop around you can find it for under $190 in many places, and around $190 here on Amazon when they have them in stock. I'm not sure if this is real leather or bonded leather (which in my opinion is NOT real leather), but the material feels pretty sturdy and hopefully won't peel in places like a lot of the so-called real (bonded) leather chairs do. Some may find the adjustable lumbar support great; I like it at its default setting, which seems to me to be 20x more than my last chair had. All in all, I'm optimistic about this chair holding up well for my 8+ hours a day sitting in it. Update: after using this at home I purchased one for work... but for some reason it is different at work - the way that I sit, the height of the desk... and the chair just sits way too low for me at work. I don't know why, but the height doesn't bother me at home. The gas cylinder that comes with the chair is pretty small... the height at its lowest point has me feel like I'm almost sitting on the floor and then it doesn't really come up that much from there. Ideally I like the chair height to be so that your thighs are parallel to the floor with your feet flat on the floor... there is no way for that to happen with this chair form someone who is over 6 feet tall or someone who has long legs. So, if this is you... purchase a larger, more height adjustable gas cylinder with your chair and install that one instead when you assemble the chair so you don't have to go through the pain of having to replace it like I did. Still love how comfortable this chair is... ... show more

FINAL UPDATE - Don't waste your time and money on this chair. Get this one instead: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09YRHMQN8?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details It isn't 100% plastic, has WAY more lumbar support and adjustability, and it sits at NORMAL height (this Serta sits lower than probably 90% of office chairs) UPDATE -- Changed rating from 5 stars to 2 stars About ~4 months ago (a little after owning for 1 year) the lift continually deflates on itself. The chair is not actually made by Serta so Serta does not warranty it. Not expected quality for such an expensive chair. I've gone through 3 chairs in the last ~12 months during COVID, working from home. One of them was also a $180 Serta chair. This is by far the most comfortable chair I've ever owned, and so far I haven't seen any sign of it deteriorating or having any issues. The smart layer coils are a night and day difference from a normal padded chair, it's like sitting on a cushy mattress that never flattens out. The adjustable lumbar support actually helped my back pain significantly. I had only one issue, and that was that it sits lower than any other office chair I've owned. I resolved this by purchasing aftermarket 4" wheels, and it now sits at a normal height. Worth the $35 for wheels for how comfy this chair is. ... show more
