    • About the Sound

So I don’t write too many reviews, but I wanted to put this together for people who are as confused as I was about whether or not these drives are loud. Before I settled on these, I read tons of reviews on Newegg and Amazon and it seemed like a pretty even split between people who think these drives are horrendously loud, and people who think they are silent as the grave. The short answer seems to be, they are both. The key is how they’re being used. In my experience, these drives are silent until a couple of seconds into a large data transfer. After that, they start to make some noise, and it is significant. I wouldn’t want to listen to it for a long time. However, in my use case, (a personal home media server that only I use) I never reach the maximum speed of the drives (around 250mb per second) unless I am transferring whole shows onto the drive, or exporting them to an external device, and in that case, the transfers do not last long. Also, I am not seated next to the computer when tranferring large files so the sound is quieter from a short distance. My advice when purchasing these drives is to think about your use case. Mainly, how often will you need to move files that are bigger than just a couple gigabytes? Because that is when the louder, more concerning noises will occur. Also, consider setting up your pc so that the drives never disengage or “spin down” once the pc is on. There is a delay of several seconds before you can access files and a lot of noise when the drives first spin up before they settle into silent operation. (Personally, I like the sound they make when they spin up, but I wouldn’t want them doing that all the time. It’s bad for them. ((I know that is contested, but I’m saying it anyway, since I think the people on the other side of that argument are wrong.)) ... show more

    • Stay away from the 18TBs

I have purchased numerous Seagate drives, internal and external, over the years, but this review is for the 18TB drives I bought on Amazon. I have purchased 3 of the 18s. The first one started to fail shortly after I bought it and I had to hustle to save data before it became unusable. The second one disappeared to large folders filled with important files. I didn't even get a notification until I noticed they were missing and scanned the drive. Recovery software could see the lost files, but only recovered a fraction of them. Later, while removing the drive from the computer, the plastic SATA clip on the back snapped off, rendering the drive unusable. I tried to transfer the piece from the first bad drive to it to see if I could boot it, but it didn't work. I bought the third 18TB in Nov 2023. Now, just 4 months later, it is starting to fail. I have to scramble once again to get my files off of it while I still can. It's strange because I have 10 Seagate HDDs in my computer, and I can't remember the last time I had a drive die on me before I could Lifecycle Replace it. But I'm inclined to think there is something wrong with the 18s. I didn't return my drives to Seagate because I don't want to share whatever data can be recovered. So I'll just eat the loss, about $1000 for the 3 drives. The next time a Seagate lets me down, I'll be switching to WD. ... show more

    • Easy to use 5yr warranty

The best thing about this product is the 5 year warranty. I have 8 of these 14TB drives and after a year, two have completely failed. I mean failed to the point where data on that drive is not recoverable. If you plan on using these drives make sure to have some sort of redundancy or backup. Whatever is commonly failing on these drives is not something where you will be warned or have time to backup, they just die immediately. Seagate makes it really easy to register the drives and see all your products on one page, and getting a replacement takes one click of a button and you can choose the free option (send in your drive then they mail you the replacement) or a premium replacement option where they overnight you a drive for $20 then you send yours in. This is the best part about the product, I invested in these drives because I know I'm guaranteed at least 5 years where I don't have to purchase a brand new drive. The reliability however is questionable, so I took a star off since you heavily rely on replacing these drives so often via warranty. ... show more

Considering the pricing available on other enterprise class drives at the time of purchase $280 for an 18TB drive was not bad. There is always some concern when shopping for "Deals" you run the risk of counterfeit or "used" products but these were legit, brand new Seagate drives as verified by registering with Seagate prior to even opening the sealed bags. ... show more
