Stakes have nice thin flutes, which are plenty strong and grippy. Thin flutes have advantages of offering less resistance to ground-penetration and lighter weight. However, thin flutes at the top make inserting the into the ground challenging. By hand, thin-flutes are too sharp. By foot, thin-flutes are likewise too sharp. By rock-pounding, thin-flutes are too weak. Yet making the whole flute thicker for marginal gains at the top doesn't make sense either. Enter, brazing a 3/4" diameter aluminum blank (1gram) at the top (see photo). Not sure why Sea-to-Summit can't do this or better? Better would be a tightly-fitted 1/8" cup topper welded, not brazed. Plastic rebar end-caps also function, but weigh a lot more and aren't as durable. Brazing/Welding solves all three use-cases (hand, foot, rock). Was a bit of work to add the toppers, but these stakes are now way better than MSR's (MSR heads break-off, the flutes require more force for ground-penetration and the stubbier flutes don't hold as well). ... show more

8 aluminum tent pegs with reflective pull cord. This little detail is great for being able to see the pegs in the dark. Comes with a small stuff sack that you can fit a tent pole repair coupling and a few extra (3-4)pegs in. My tent is the REI Half Dome 2 Plus and it takes 4 stakes for the corners, 4 for the corner guy lines and another 4 for the doors and vent guy outs. So I had to order more because it only comes with 6. I have had really good experiences with a bunch of other Sea to Summit stuff (cookware, stuff sacks, bag liner) so I decided to give these a try. So far with about 2 trips and 7 days under their belt - they’re good to go. Only other ones I’d considered using are the MSR Carbon Core. Just remember, they are classified in the ultralight gear range, meaning you can’t beat them into the ground. That said, I haven’t found a lightweight stake that can. If that’s what you need, consider going with a heavier duty drive pin like a 50 penny nail or something similar. ... show more

    • metal holds up to pounding and rocks, but the ties fall apart quickly

These have been great for our rocky camping trips. They held up against our mallets and stake hammers well. However, the ties to help you get them out are poorly designed. The cord does not knot together but is rather flimsily attached to the ends of a rubber/plastic piece. We've had nearly every single of of ours (we have 3 packs of these) break off, often on the first trip out of the box. We ended up buying better cord to replace them, which is working great, but shouldn't be necessary. ... show more
