11-20-2020 UPDATE: After hanging the 10x10 Aqua Quest Safari Tarp in my hot garage the past four weeks much of the odor dissipated. My product review is thus upgraded to 3 stars. If you want an odor free alternative at 1/5 the price check out River Country Products Hammock Rain Fly or Camping Tarp. It is only 8x9 feet and it lacks some of the tie-outs vs the Aqua Quest but it works very well for the price. I plan on keeping both tarps: the River Country tarp for backpacking, and the Aqua Quest for car camping / base camp. The Aqua Quest tarp is probably superior to River Country for people who want to use it occasionally as a tent, though the heavier Defender Series tarp would be more durable for that purpose. ORIGINAL 10/20/2020 REVIEW: After watching and reading many product reviews and cross shopping similar products I had high hopes for the Aqua Quest Safari Tarp. I loved the stitching quality, how the seams were sealed, the generous number of tie-outs and the fabric feel. I just completed my second backcountry trip using the tarp for a total of five nights. The following review describes my consistent problem with the tarp. What started as a mild chemical odor I hoped would go away remains persistently nauseating. At first I laid the tarp out in my living room to air it out, but the tarp created such a stench throughout my residence that I had to take it outside. The smell lingered in my furniture for days. I washed the tarp in my bathtub twice and initially that seemed to help. But on my first camping trip two weeks ago I awakened each of my three nights sleeping under the tarp with headaches. I rarely had headaches during tent camping at similar or higher altitudes. After re-immersing the tarp thoroughly in my bathtub, draping it over my car in the intense sun, and staking it multiple days outdoors in the sun I decided to take it on a second camping trip. With the tarp raised high above my hammock, and with a gentle cross breeze, I again awakened each morning with headaches. My sleeping bag reeked of tarp odor even though no part of the sleeping bag came within 24 inches of the tarp. Hours later my sleeping bag still reeked. Overall, I am beginning to doubt this tarp's odor will fully dissipate. It's been outdoors 24-7 for over nine days in the sun and the smell remains noticeable. Aside from the tarp's odor it seems to work fine, though it hasn't been through a rain storm yet. DISCLOSURE #1: I seem to be more sensitive to urethane & adhesive off-gassing than some people. I had a similar sensitivity to the multilayer foam mattress I bought in 2018. After several months the mattress odor dissipated and I was able to sleep on it without problems. Other than volatile organic solvents I don't have a strong sense of smell, probably about average for a guy in his 50s and less than most women. DISCLOSURE #2: This is my first silnylon tarp, so I don't know if the Aqua Quest's odor is better or worse than other silnylon tarps. My suspicion is it depends how much / what type of urethane was applied and whether the tarp was allowed to off-gas before shipping. I expect the expensive cottage industry silnylon tarps don't have as much odor, which may partly explain their high cost. I remain undecided whether to keep this tarp or return it? I will give it several more days in full-sun and see how bad the odor is. I have a slightly smaller $20 square tarp on order. If it smells OK then the Aqua Quest tarp will go back. ONE FURTHER NOTE: After being thoroughly submerged in my bathtub the Aqua Quest tarp took many hours to air-dry. Water-logging may be a relative downside of nylon versus polyester. I doubt a rainstorm would penetrate the material as thoroughly as submerging it did. Silpoly tarps seem a little heavier than silnylon tarps when they are dry for similar thickness but I am no expert on this subject. A wet tarp is a heavy tarp. Many long distance through-packers choose Dyneema tarps for water repulsion and low weight, but those are $$$$. Silnylon seems like a good cost-quality trade off for weekend campers, except for the odor. Five stars are awarded for construction. Three stars deducted for morning headaches and for a terrible odor that transfers to other fabrics. Buyer beware! – don't take this tarp on a camping trip until you air it out. ... show more

This my 2nd tarp from Aqua Quest. The first trip that I brought my original Aqua Quest tarp on, we got hit by long, intense thunder storm with high wind (that shifted direction multiple times) driving steep-angle torrents of rain. The poor-quality (but still not inexpensive) tarp from REI that we also had setup literally shredded apart: failing at the grommets but also just splitting a few places in the middle as well. Even though we had the AQ setup in a much less sheltered spot, higher from the ground, and under quite a bit of tension, it came through that storm (and many others) with no sign of wear. Had it not been for the AQ tarp, much of our gear would have been soaked and we would have been confined to our individual tents. Instead we where able to enjoy the storm together dry and warm under the tarp and even had a hot meal. I usually leave mine up in the sun, wind, rain for week-long trips (only taking it down to move sites). My older model from the same company (apparently of the same material) and the one that's seen a few seasons of the use described above and is indistinguishable from the new one in terms of wear. This tarp is not inexpensive, but it's an excellent value. IMO even if this tarp makes the difference between 1 day being miserable or pleasant , it's already more than justified it's cost (how valuable is your limited vacation time to you?).... and it will continue to do so time and time again, year after year. Plus, considering it's size and durability, it's shockingly light and pack-able. I think they only way to beat it in terms of performance-to-weight ratio is with cuben fiber (and you'll pay 5x the price to save those few ounces.) The plethora of tie-out loops not make both getting a good initial setup as well as quick changes (when the weather shifts direction) easy, so you can have good coverage, good internal space, eliminate pooling of water/ direct run-off and have minimal buffeting. The new tarp (the one for which this review is posted) has even more tie-outs the older one. On my last trip this year we had 2 more rainy days in middle of the week (+about 2 hrs of hard storm). But we had both tarps setup: one lower to cover the sitting area and gear and one higher to give standing room for doing work like wood and food prep. We used the tie-outs to attach then to each other at the corners and then to also create a gap in the middle to let the smoke out. Again, these tarps turned days that would have been pretty miserable into ones that where fun and productive. It's like fort-building for big-kids, but the fun factor doesn't make them any less a seriously essential piece of gear. ... show more

I was surprised at how compact and light this is. I knew it was marketed as a sort of middle ground between the Survival tarp and the Defender, so I was expecting it to be somewhat heavy, but It's incredibly light and easily fits into my backpack. I thought I was going to have to cram it in! The camouflage is a nice, dull, dark, matte color, which is exactly what I wanted, so again, perfect for my purposes. It doesn't catch the eye and looks natural. It's also sufficiently waterproof. Overall, I'm very happy with it. ... show more
