I just received my Schwinn 430 a few days ago and I am very impressed. The frame of this machine is quite sturdy and very well constructed. In addition, it's performance is quite smooth. I am 6 ft tall and the 20 in stride is completely comfortable. Moreover, the magnetic resistance works quite well and is very challenging when it needs to be. Furthermore, the dual monitor display is very well thought out. In fact, the control buttons are well placed and the arrangement of them is pretty simple to understand. I also like the fact that the pedals are quite large and it is easy to maintain balance with little effort. I think the fitness conglomerate of schwinn, Bowflex, Nautilus and universal really hit it out of the park with this model. Truthfully, the Schwinn 430 has been around for a number of years and they do a really nice job of updating it yearly. Be aware, if you do decide to purchase this glider it comes in a very large box. Moreover, there are a lot of parts and it will take quite a bit of assembly. All in all, it took me about 2 hours to assemble the whole machine. In addition, it is probably best to purchase some silicone-based lubricant to lightly coat the joints during assembly. Especially, the rubber idler tires that glide up and down the frame rail. Trust me, if you do not lubricate them your glider will squeak terribly. Schwinn really should have touched on this fact in the owner's manual. Although, it is really a minor issue that is easy to deal with. I really only have a few criticisms. The glider itself is equipped with built-in stereo speakers. However, the volume on them is quite low so, don't expect too much. In addition, Schwinn for whatever reason put the power connection at the bottom of the front base where it is somewhat exposed and could be damaged if you accidentally hit it with your foot. Even more problematic, the power supply connector that inserts at the base of the machine sticks straight out and it probably would have been wiser to equip it with one that featured a 90° angle. That would keep the plug from sticking straight out. Other than these two things, there really isn't anything to complain about. I have been a fitness professional working in the industry for 25 years and I see all kinds of equipment come and go. As I stated earlier, this model has been around for a while but, it really has a timeless design. I really would not hesitate to recommend this model. Schwinn did a really nice job.

I bought this elliptical on 9/28/18. My first comments will be on the installation. This was offered at no charge which was a great deal -- or so I thought. The first installers came to put the machine together. The installation was very noisy as they were banging parts together. I was concerned but they told me not to worry and that I could txt them if there were any issues down the road. The next day, the machine started making clicking sounds. The noise got worse and worse as I used the machine. I contacted the installers and they refused to come back. Without bothering to come and check the elliptical, they blamed it on the machine being faulty. I was very upset. I only had the elliptical for one day. I called Amazon and, I have to say, they were incredibly helpful. It took a lot of steps but they sent me a new machine and scheduled a new installer to come. This installer was VLL GROUP. If you’re in Los Angeles, please ask for them for your Amazon installations. They are incredibly professional and truly know their craft. It’s been over a month now since they installed my new elliptical and it runs great. At this time, I sincerely believe that the complaints about this machine making noises could potentially due to how it was installed. There are no shortcuts. You have to know what you’re doing. You have to take your time. I watched VLL GROUP install my elliptical and it was clear that they cared to do the job right. Now, on to the machine. I use it for 50 minutes 5 days out of 7. It runs smoothly. No noise. It gives me a good sweat. There are different levels that you can manually adjust to, I use the highest. You can use the handles or not. I don’t think it keeps track of the calories accurately but a good rule of thumb is, depending on how dedicated you are when using it, you can burn about 200 calories in 30 minutes. I still go to the gym and, as much as I like my home elliptical, I know it’s not a gym quality elliptical. But for the price, it’s worth it. I like that I can jump on it first thing in the morning without having to drive to the gym. I like that I can do an extra 30 minutes of cardio late at night if I need to sweat off extra calories. Note that after a few weeks, you might hear a faint squishing sound. What I do is this: put a little Vaseline on the legs where the rollers slide and you should be back in business. I wouldn’t use oil lubricant. Initially, I did that and sprayed it on the legs and it made the squishing worse. I had to wipe it off clean with a wet towel, let the legs dry and then dab the Vaseline along the legs. I do recommend this machine BUT ONLY with the right installers.

Overall, very solid and feels like it should last. Moves smoothly and quietly and is mechanically very good. (I did have problems with delivery - Amazon initially delivered a used Sunny stationary bike (complete with the shipping label showing the previous purchaser's name and address!). When I told the 2 Amazon delivery people, they said that "by law" they had to leave it then just walked to their truck and drove away. I'm still waiting for pickup of the wrong item...) When the proper Schwinn 430 arrived, it appeared to be new and in good condition. Assembly was straight-forward once I was able to get everything out of the tightly packed box. Tools are included although you might want to use your own tools if you have them. There is only 1 step (installing console mast) where it would be nice to have a third hand to hold something while attaching bolts. I did wipe the rails with silicone and made sure everything moved smoothly before trying it out. Others have reported issues with the rollers so I'm going to keep an eye on them and keep the rails clean and lubricated. The machine is comfortable to use and feels ergonomically correct. Even though I've never been accused of having long legs, I'm glad I got a machine with a 20" stride and not shorter. The incline adjustment makes a big difference on which muscles in my legs are used and the manual adjustment is very quick and easy to use. Resistance adjustment is easy with several buttons on the console. Resistance level is shown on the lower display but you have to scroll through 3 screens and you can't show elapsed time and resistance at same time. My only real disappointments are with the console. The built in speakers are small and sound muddy - my iPad has better sound. There is no bluetooth connection, and the only input for sound is via a ⅛" jack. I was going to buy an adapter but then realized I'm better off just not using those speakers. The built in fan makes more noise than it moves air (not surprising as the whole thing runs off a 9 volt adapter that plugs into the wall and connects via a skinny wire to the front of machine). The dual screen is monochrome and definitely looks like it belongs on equipment made many years ago. My upper screen initially had black areas scattered throughout - may have been from pressure on it during shipping and is slowly improving with time. It has multiple programs for various levels of exercise, but I would be more inclined to use them with a better interface. Most of the time I just prefer to adjust the resistance (and incline) manually and not bother with the programs and stats. As noted above, I wish that I could view resistance level and elapsed time together. One other minor pet peeve; although the assembly manual was included, you have to go online to see the operation manual. I'm all for saving trees, but the paper saved is extremely small compared to all the packing material that comes with the elliptical, and I personally prefer having a manual that I can look at anywhere and add notes to. Overall a good machine that feels professional in quality. The console needs a major refresh (bluetooth, better interface and graphics) but for me that's not a really big deal. I would still be happy with just resistance adjustment buttons, time and perhaps heart rate readouts. I was looking for something that felt solid and enjoyable to use but didn't cost a fortune, and this fits the bill.

I love the elliptical and thought it would be nice to have my own so I wouldn't have to spend money at the gym. I chose this, over a Peloton, because of the cheaper price tag and I am kicking myself. First, the packaging was awful. Everything is packaged nicely in styrofoam. The problem was all the styrofoam sections were taped together with packing tape, so it was a huge pain in the butt to get the pieces out and there were small chunks of styrofoam every where. Secondly, the assembly was so incredibly difficult for one person. It is possible - I did it, but it is so incredibly challenging. The order of some of the instructions made no sense and therefore I had to undo pieces so I could to assemble. Example: the instructions make it seem like you should attach the front part of the pedal to the arm first, then attach the back part to the frame. Well, you can't get the back part onto the frame once you attach the front part because it doesn't line up well. Attaching the console mast to the frame was the most difficult part. Not only is it at an angle, making it nearly impossible to screw it in, you also have to deal with the Upper Shroud which isn't attached and slides all over the place. All in all, this took just under three hours to assemble. It was a massive pain, but I was still content with my purchase at that point. The massive mistake I made really presented itself when I got it all assembled and ready to use. The console is difficult to read because it's black and white. The bottle holder is useless because the bottle bounces all over the place when you're using the machine because it doesn't fit snuggly in the holder. The machine squeaks. Not very loud, but enough to be annoying. I can't use the Static Handlebar because the the moving handle bars wack me on the arms. It doesn't tell RPM's, which is the best way to understand how fast you are going. I always try to maintain and RPM goal. I can't do that. Worst of all, if you go at faster than a slow pace the thing wobbles. I hate this thing. Lesson learned - you get what you pay for and I certainly overpaid here. I'm going to try and get rid of this thing - if you're in the Bay Area and want it, it's brand new - come and take it away for $200! You get what you pay for. By a more expensive elliptical if you really want one. This one isn't very good.

This is a first impressions review after one day's use. Will update after a few weeks. So far I'm impressed. It's solid and well built--no cheesy parts or connections. Heavy duty construction. I'm 66 yrs old and have never been a fan of gyms (I like to run in the woods). I hate treadmills but ellipticals give me a no-impact, all-over workout. This Schwinn 430 elliptical is quiet, stable and smooth. I weigh 150 lbs. Assembly was 2 hours. If you're not good mechanically it might take a little bit longer. Directions are straightforward. Nuts and washers,etc. are sealed in plastic on a cardboard backing so they don't get lost in transit. The bearings and sleeves have some silicone grease already, but I added more grease (from my own supply) on moving and rotating parts just to be sure. The pedal plates are a thick high quality plastic but could be a little slick with the wrong footwear. Your foot is kind of nestled down in the sidewalls of the plate so you won't slip off the pedal. Dimensions, etc.: Overall length is 70" Handlebar height varies as they travel back and forth--60" up to 67". Doesn't really matter since you can grip them wherever you're comfortable. What does matter is the overall height when you're on-board and working out. The ceiling in my basement is too low (85") so I put the elliptical upstairs where I have a 96" ceiling. I am 5'8" tall. At the machine's highest incline setting (100%) , the top of my head is 84" from the floor. So with this 8' ceiling I have a full 12" between the top of my head and the ceiling. In a moderate workout on this elliptical my head is pretty stationary, so that 12" is a fairly constant distance from the ceiling. The pedal height varies during exercise from about 15" to 24" at the highest incline level. [However, pedal height is not the best way to figure your ceiling clearance. The best measure for your ceiling clearance is to adjust your height up or down from my height of 5'8". (i.e.: If you are 6' tall, you'll be about 7'4" off the floor, and you'll have 8" clearance to the ceiling.)] The control panel was cutting edge technology about 15 years ago. If you compare it to a smart phone it's lacking. It's clumsy and time consuming to navigate. But...it doesn't really bother me that much. The rest of the machine is really good quality. I'll update after some time passes. UPDATE 3 weeks later---Yup, still great. I am wondering about all the negative "it squeaks!" reviews. Geezum, like I mentioned, you use a little common sense and some additional grease that matches the manufacturer's grease and I have no problems. If it didn't get enough grease at the factory--then put some more on! Pretty basic. You probably got the darn thing on sale anyway--just spend a couple bucks and you and the machine will be quiet.

What is different in MY16 is popular question. As far as I can tell from looking at the pictures of the display from the MY13, it is the display that was tweaked. People have complained about the display being too dim because it is not backlit. I don't find that to be true as the contrast (black on light olive green) is very good so the all the characters are quite visible. I'm not sure if the heart rate handles are right. I see 145 bpm but my Galaxy S6 heart rate measure through S-Health taken during the exercise is about 130. If highly accurate not relative measurements are important you, perhaps the accessory heart rate monitor is better. It would be interesting to hear if that is true from a user. Another issue noted by some is "noise." I don't hear any I would consider trouble (in fact very little). At first there were squeaks, but I traced that to my running shoes heel lifting off the foot pads. That has stopped as the pads shine as been roughed up. I attached a picture showing some very oily, fine black particles on the rung under the machine. I believe this to be just the new rollers breaking in and the original coating on the rollers but I will monitor it and provide an update if it is an issue. I'll probably just clean it up and then put something under that area so the rug doesn't get stained. Not a big deal. The manual does mention using silicone spray on the roller bars, so I ordered a bottle of that to do routine maintenance. The manual that came with the box was incomplete and for the older model. That was fixed by downloading the right one from the Schwin website. I have not connected to the Schwinn website and not sure that I will as I load my exercise information into my S-Health app. When I bought my unit, it came with free installation through Amazon. The local handyman (Road Runner) was on time and very nice. The job was done in 45 minutes (two people). If you see this machine offered with the free install, definitely go for it but realize service may depend on who Amazon contracts with in your area. Also I wonder if any of the mechanical problems noted were due to the assembly and not the machine itself. Unless your have more than two users and want to keep track of all their workouts, buying the Model 470 with a 4 user and myriad of programs is not worth the cost. An elliptical machine is the not for the faint of heart as you see above the bpm does get high! You will get a very good work out at the lowest intensity, no incline and easy programs, so be for warned. I doubt unless you are a real fitness buff in great shape you'll never access more than a few of the programs. Also,if you are not serious, this could turn into a large space eater because the workouts compared to my recumbent bike is much harder. So if you are looking for a well built, reasonably priced elliptical, the Model 430 MY16 is the way to go.

I am nearing two weeks with this product. First ever elliptical and use of one. My pros: excellent movement to give my leg muscles and arm and shoulders exercise. I have used a treadmill for several years but never felt like my legs were getting a workout like on the elliptical. Very good assembly diagrams, labeling and instructions. I was surprised at the weight of the major components that do the body support and movement arms. Cons: even at this price point for the 430 there should be a better screen. This screen reminds me of my recumbent bike screen. Almost identical. I know if I had paid $200 more I would have gotten more exercise options and a better screen but come on that much. How many options does a 71 year old senior citizen need. Guess my biggest gripe is the plastic covers they put over all the rotation points of the arms and the roller. Yesterday one popped loose and it was being hit by the roller until I realized what happened. It literally fell apart in my hand. Caused the roller to heat up tremendously but no permanent damage. Another benefit of paying more money for the 470 model is you get joint covers to snap around the nuts and bolts where the upper and lower arms are attached together. Guess purely cosmetic. Basic opinion is a decent piece of exercise equipment. If I were younger I think I would look to the commercial quality brands and pay more. This 430 reeks of inexpensive home quality and nothing more. Too many creaks and groans that have to be oiled every use and nuts tightened regularly. I’m not counting on it being around too long. Once a day use is my limit right now mixed in with the recumbent bike. Want a cheap piece of equipment? It will work for you but more active exercise people need to look elsewhere for better quality.

Just arrive today ( a day later than stated). The box had three big holes in it but FedEx was great and filed a claim just in case I needed it but everything inside was perfect. My 17-year-old grandson assembled it in two hours with just minimal help from me. The machine is whisper quiet, it’s pretty easy to move. The fan is a bit wimpy. I haven’t tried any of the programs yet but I’m really not interested in anything fancy I just like to be able to adjust my resistance level and that’s easy. OK I was going to wait a month to update my review but I’ve had this machine for almost 3 weeks and I still love it. If you were on the fence about buying a machine while the gyms are closed there are so many positives. I had to drive 10 minutes to the gym and 10 minutes back home causes more pollution and waste gas waste my time. With this machine in my garage I can walk out in my pajamas and work out if I feel like it. When I’m done I walk 20 feet into my sparkling clean shower instead of the nasty gym shower were women leave clumps of hair the size of rats in the drain😫. If I can’t stomach the gym shower I would have to get in my car and get my seat all sweaty. If you’re not sure about an elliptical machine I like them because I feel like they are easy on your joints I have an old shoulder injury and I feel like the repetitive motion of the handlebars is helpful. As a retired person I spend a lot of time sitting so I really like that my workout is done standing up. You can use this machine forward or backward it’s perfectly smooth. In one word for anybody who had someone put this together and have a complaint that it’s noisy I would not let them leave until they figured out the problem because this machine is still whisper quiet after three weeks. When my grandson very first set it up I got on and it made a clunking noise and right away he noticed the left foot rest wasn’t completely on the track a one second adjustment and it’s been perfect ever since. Besides they’re not very effective Santa only thing I would like is to have edges on the phone rest instead of a lipped shelf to keep my phone secure although the machine has very little wobble during the work out it still bothers me because I have a concrete floor. I’m sure I can make that modification myself but overall I am just so happy with this machine I doubt that I’ll ever go back to the gym.
