  • Schumacher Sequential Battery Charger
Style: 2 Bank Part Number: SC1644
Seems to be just the thing I needed to charge the new lithium batteries I just purchased for my boat's trolling motor.

  • Used for maintaining aircraft batteries while out of aircraft
Style: 3 Bank Part Number: SC1645
This charger is being used to keep aircraft batteries charged while removed from the aircraft during maintenance. No issues so far and no apparent issues with higher than desired voltages, etc. For maintenance or marine use, this is ideal.

  • Solid Construction, Quality Cabling, Comes With Everything You Need
Style: 3 Bank Part Number: SC1645
I acquired this charger to be permanently mounted in my boat for shore charging/maintaining. The charger is heavy and well put together. A rubber gasket is used to keep water out along with quality nylon cable glands. One thing that I am a little surprised at is that the circuit board within is not a coated board. Most marine or applications that can be exposed to water will have a circuit board that is coated with a sealing substance to minimize corrosion or conductivity on the board from water getting on it. Another interesting thing is that there is a fan inside the chassis which points between the two heatsinks. I guess it can circulate air inside the case but there is no way for the heat to get out, so not sure what purpose the fan really serves. Perhaps larger heatsinks would have been able to better dissipate the heat versus trying to use a fan in a sealed container. One last thing I noticed is that if you connect a batter and then remove it a short time later, the charger doesn't detect the removal of the battery for some time. I would expect the logic circuitry to detect the removal of a battery instantly and cease charging but it didn't appear to. ... show more

  • Big box. Only has Ring Terminals.
Style: 2 Bank Part Number: SC1644
For what this does, it's great. I have the two-bank battery charger, and the method in which it charges goes back and forth to keep them as equal as possible. It says it will work for LiFEPO4 batteries, which is why I got it. But, I assumed it would have clamps so you could use it on pretty much anything. It does not. It only has ring terminals. This makes it so I have to now either reattach it to clamps, or attach the rings to clamps. Minus this inconvenience, Schumacher is a name brand in battery maintainers, and should serve well. it's just a big bulky plastic box though with watertight connectors which give it its "Marine" rating. ... show more

  • Unit is huge. Manual is tiny and cheap. Battery cables hard-wired to charge. Rings only; no clips
Style: 3 Bank Part Number: SC1645
Most multi-bank, high-current, weatherproof marine battery chargers are quite expensive, partially because they employ a separate charge circuit for each battery. This charger brings the cost down by taking the clever approach of 'time sharing' a single charging circuit so that each battery gets 15 minutes of charge time before the unit cycles on to the next one. The price you pay is longer charge times when multiple batteries are charging at once. I was not prepared for how huge this battery charger would be. I included a foot-long ruler next to it in one of the photos to give you some sense of the scale. Although not shown in the photos, it's three inches thick from top to bottom. The "Owners Manual" is decidedly a low-rent, black & white affair It consists of two 11"x17" double-sided pages folded in half, one inside the other. It's not even stapled. Half is in English and half is in French, but instead of printing English on one sheet of four pages and French on the other, they intermixed them so you can't just keep the sheet with your language. Nothing in the manual or on the packaging describes how many, or which, charging stages this provides. It obviously does bulk charging and float, but there's no mention of absorption or equalization stages. Nor does the manual indicate whether the charger has temperature compensation to adjust voltages for temperature extremes in summer and winter. In fact, it doesn't even list the finishing/float voltage for any of the selections. That kind of "don't worry your pretty little head" documentation is concerning. Operating the charger is simplicity itself. Just use the for the bank in question to select battery type of standard lead-acid, AGM, lithium, or none. There are no settings for more esoteric battery types, such as gel or spiral cell. You cannot limit the charge current to less than 15A on any of the banks. If you have a smaller battery, or just wish to charge at a more conservative current than 15A, this isn't the charger for you. If you have a gel battery rated at less than 75AH capacity, the 15A output from this charger is in excess of recommended (Maximum Charge Current = Amp-Hour rating x 0.2). Between the size of the charger and the requirements put forth in the manual, finding a suitable mounting location will be challenging in many boats. From the manual: ______________ 4.1 Locate charger as far away from battery as DC cables permit. ... 4.4 Do not operate charger in a closed-in area or restrict ventilation in any way. ... 7.2 When choosing a location: • Do not restrict the airflow under the charger. Do not mount the charger next to fuel tanks or below the waterline of the boat. The charger is rainproof and is approved for mounting on the weatherdeck. • To allow for proper air circulation, a minimum of four inches of unobstructed area must be permitted on all sides of the charger. ______________ The charger dimensions are roughly 12" wide by 7" tall by 3" thick. In order to comply with the "minimum of four inches of unobstructed area must be permitted on all sides of the charger" statement in the manuals, you would need a mounting surface of 20" x 15" for the footprint of the unit. That space would have to be as far away from the batteries as the cables would allow, above the waterline, not next to fuel tanks, and "not a closed-in area." There are James Bond villains whose motor yachts would have been hard-pressed to accommodate this battery charger! The manual says: ______________ "13. When charging is complete, disconnect the charger from the AC power, remove the red (positive) ring terming from the battery post, and then the black (negative) ring terminal from the battery post." ______________ Huh? A customer with a permanently mounted marine battery charger, with float capability, is supposed to unplug the charger and tear down the battery wiring on three batteries at the end of each charge cycle? I just want to live in a world where all lawyers have to comply 100% with everything other lawyers have forced into product manuals. That would cut down on the amount of time they have to create idiotic instructions like this one. For: Low cost Three banks Weatherproof 15A charge rate for fast charging Against: Too much space required and too many limitations on mounting if one adheres to the manual No faster than a 5A charger when all three banks are charging at once No ability to select charge rates lower than 15A Horrible manual Lack of information on stages, temperature compensation, completion voltages, etc. Given the price, features, limitations, and flaws, I'm giving this a four-star rating. ... show more

  • Pretty good for big batteries. basically a three way trickle charger
Style: 3 Bank Part Number: SC1645
First off, don't hook this up to your smaller LiFePO4 batteries. It doesn't go below 15a and small LiFePO4 batteries should not be charged at that rate. This is for big batteries. If you have smaller batteries that you use for things aside from the main battery on your boat or whatever, this isn't for those. You'll need a separate charger than can be adjusted below 15A. It's big. I figured it would be big, with 3 15A outputs. I then realized that it said "sequential". Oops. It doesn't have 3 15A outputs, it has 1 15A output, that it swaps between 3 cables. So....it's basically like having 3 5A chargers. Yay? With that, it's basically a three way trickle charger. It did work just fine. I hooked it up to three of my deep cycle batteries, it charged them and is currently maintaining them. I previously would connect them to three chargers. Three chargers that do more than 15A and can be dropped below 15A to charge my LiFePO4 batteries. Basically, here's the question for this. How limited is your space? If your answer is "very", then this might be a good idea. Got a little boat and three big batteries? This could work. If this isn't your situation, you are probably better served by smarter chargers. ... show more
