Got it installed and it's working well. Download the Schlage App first and it will give you step by video guidance on how to install it. Give it a day or two for Thread to start working if you are using it in HomeKit. You can check the status in the Eve App by the way. I'm using both the Schlage App (which users WiFi) and the HomeKit App (which uses Thread), but mainly because the Schlage App has easier Access Management tools and is needed for Firmware updates. If you can get by with HomeKit only the batteries will last a lot longer, but I'd rather have the convenience of both Apps. The HomeKit integration is my main App though. Love the "one touch" unlocking with my Apple Watch and being able to use Siri to operate it. It's really intuitive to use and my Wife and Kids clued in on it easily. You press the Home Icon on the keypad to bring up the display and then enter your code to unlock it, and you press the Lock Icon when you leave to lock it. You've probably used similar if you've ever stayed at an Air BnB. I love how it tells you who used what code (or if they used their phone or watch) and when too. It even pops up on my Apple TV 4k (which you need if you want Thread to work). There's a ton of features I don't use like auto lock because I can envision the cleaners leaving the door open and then closing it with the deadbolt open and marring the doorjamb. So you gotta think a lot of this stuff though. I mainly got it to get rid of having to carry the key and to get our Cleaners and Kids in when they come. It's also nice when I go for a walk. I'm tending to use the Front door more now that it's so easy. As smart locks go, this one looks great and is the smallest one I've seen that actually still looks like a lock. I bought the Schlage Camelot Door Handles that match it and they are super high quality. It latches SO smoothly. I guess I didn't realize there was much difference between name brand locks, but there are definitely levels to this game and Schage is a cut above. One thing to keep in mind. Strike plate alignment is critical on these. The bolt has to hit the hole without any obstruction. If you have any drag on the motor, it will fail prematurely. I ended up buying new oversized strike plates and redid them both just to give it plenty of room in case the house shifts a bit. That took longer to do than installing the lock did, but man it looks so professional now. The old Strike Plates were trashed. So well worth the effort. Time will tell on the reliability, but so far a week in and everything's working perfectly. I love having it. It's the gift that keeps on giving. ... show more

Absolutely furious at this lock!

I have not yet had this lock 30 days, it was delivered on December 2, 2024, I was able to install it within a day or two. For the most part the instillation was simple, but I have done this plenty of times over the years. The only initial frustration was that it did not want to connect to the wifi, in fact I tried multiple times for 2 days. Finally, I got it connected and it was working just fine. But, to be honest, it was also not being used. It may have been locked and unlocked 3 or 4 times in the initial 2 or 3 weeks. Now, week 4, I am out of state with animals at home that need to he let out. My son goes to the home to feed them, and the lock wont open. His code won't work, AND I cannot connect remotely. When it does finally connect, I get the error that the lock is jammed. I try unlocking dozens of times, no luck, always getting an error that it is jammed. It was just used by my daughter earlier that day, and locked using her code, so this made no sense. Finally after more than hour of trying I finally have to call a locksmith to break into my own home because this worthless lock wont operate. I have a diabetic dog inside who needs his insulin and is more than an hour late for his meds. So now I have paid $300 for a lock and it basically fails miserably when we actually try to rely on it as the simple fix as our keyless option while out of town. I am beyond mad at this failure, and to top it off, my son says something is not working inside the lock because he cannot lock it again. Keep in mind, I asked the locksmith to break into my vehicle and retrieve a garage door opener, not the lock, so it was absolutely not damaged by the locksmith. I am waiting to find out what Schlage is going to do about this because it is my opinion they owe me my locksmith fees back as well. This worthless product completely failed me when we counted on it the most. DO NOT BUY THIS LOCK. It's not worth the $300 they charge you for it. ... show more

Yes, this is a costly lock system. Installation instructions were clear and it works with my iPhones, which is primarily why I selected this model. I can unlock it simply by holding my phone near the front of the lock. At times, I may need to tap it or get closer to it to work. Ditch the key! Use your Apple Watch!

I couldn't find another lock that promised to work with my iPhone and Apple Watch. It was easy to install, but I missed wherever it said to push the button under the battery cover to pair it with my phone, so dug that up on the www. Then sharing the Home Key with my wife took a few minutes. So I feel like there could have been a bit more help on the Schlage site, but it's not like I couldn't dig it up easily enough. The good part is, it works great. My wife and I can hold our Apple Watch or iPhone to it and it locks or unlocks. No fishing for keys. No installing a Schlage app. I set up a passcode to share if someone else needs to get in. I'll probably hide the one key that came with it out in the garage (accessible by another keypad on the garage door opener) just in case it goes haywire. There's other features available, but I'm not a home automation guy besides having a few lights that go on and off automatically when we're away. This is all I wanted, to be able to open the door without fishing around in my pocket or wife's purse. She's overjoyed, because she takes a walk without her purse, and now she won't have to remember to take the extra key! ... show more

PROS: First, I've read many, many articles, reviews and viewed twice as many videos searching for the best Apple HomeKit compatible smart lock. I did my homework. Bingo - Schlage Encode Plus kept coming up as the one to purchase. The "Plus" means it Apple HomeKit compatible. I bought two. I agree hands down I made the correct purchase. They have worked seamlessly from install to setup. It took longer to install (15 minutes changing out hardware, etc) than to connect to HomeKit (2 minutes). Neither was complicated or frustrating! The connectivity has been seamless. I had a need to set up temporary Codes for others including limits to what days and hours, expiration date, etc. and when miles away from home lock or unlock the door, all done easily and successfully through HomeKit App. Schlage has a wealth of information on install and setting up and connecting to HomeKit. Start first with downloading the Schlage App. Also, they have great interactive instructions available walking you through step by step. All this makes for a successful install and operation. CONS: As for features, the only downside is getting geofence capabilities to work seamlessly in HomeKit and this appears to be because of security protections with HomeKit. Overkill, let the user decide. There is no information out there about this. The focus seems to be tap your phone or watch to lock/unlock while you are standing there (can also use Siri inside, etc) but NOT on setting up Scenes and Automations which is the weak link. When set up in Scenes with my other items, lamps, etc. nothing worked properly with Automation automatically due to the "alert" that pops up on iPhone screen asking if you want to execute the Automation. For example, pulling into or out of the garage and driveway "Scene" for lock or unlock Schlage locks, turn on or off lights, etc. I have to confirm execution of Scene on my iPhone pop up notification! Bummer. I had to remove the locks from the "Scene" and all was back to normal. An alert still pops up for the locks asking to confirm. This needs improvement holistically. I'm still seeking solutions and I'm sticking with my purchases. Also, Schlage only includes one key with the lock. At this price point, two keys would be appropriate. UPDATE: 08-10-2025: Through a Siri command on my phone or watch and also via CarPlay, I'm able to lock and unlock the door(s) upon leaving and/or returning home, pulling into or out of the driveway, etc. Though I don't consider this HomeKit Automation, it's a work around. Defective Schlage Encode Plus Smart Locks - DO NOT BUY

These are truly terrible locks. Do not purchase them. I've had two of these locks for one and a half years. They're plagued with problems. First, the battery holder does not fit securely inside the lock's housing. So if a door is slammed, the batteries will come slightly loose just long enough for the lock to need to reboot. To solve this problem, I've resorted to duct tape. I literally have to tape the battery casing to the lock itself. Second, I've had to replace both of these locks in just that year and a half. Quite often the motor that engages the lock or, correction, the motor that opens and closes the lock gets stuck on. It won't deactivate. So when you're manually locking and unlocking, you're fighting against the motor. This causes battery drain and overheating. Removing the batteries and putting them back in sometimes solves this problem, but not always. Third, after a period of time with the engaged gear issue, the lock will start to overheat. It will get so hot that it can be dangerous to touch where the QR code label is. This will cause the battery to drain in 15 minutes or less. Replacing the old batteries with new ones does not help. Again, there's some thermal overload issue where the battery is consumed again within 15 minutes. After that, the locks are 100% dead. Placing new batteries into them will not help. The lock is completely unresponsive with no lights or control on the touchpad. ... show more

Integrates with Alexa and has a decent app that seems to work reliably

It's a great lock, and one of very few that meet the needs for security, build quality, with a functional smart lock app. You'll probably buy this one if you need a deadbolt-only solution, because it is the best out there. Regardless, there are some details about how it works that are hard to research before you buy the lock. I hope this is useful. I liked that... - It looks good. Styling is contemporary but understated. It doesn't stick out as a Smart Lock. This means it was approved by my condo board easily and it doesn't attract attention like a dated techie smart lock (which is practically an invitation to try to hack electronically!). Brushed nickel matches my existing Schlage door handle and lock. - It has a good build quality and seems solid and secure. It doesn't attract attention with branding and high-styling like some other locks out there that are an invitation to be hacked electronically. It has good security ratings - It took time and some tools to install, but could be done myself without a locksmith and still achieve a professional-looking outcome. The setup instructions, diagrams and descriptions in the app setup guide were EXCELLENT, thorough, complete, and addressed a number of different situations you might encounter. I was easy to install given that I already had a deadbolt this was replacing. I did have to carve out or enlarge the hole in my door so this would fit. I was able to use a screwdriver to do this without drilling a new and larger round hole, but it took a little confidence as a DIY-er. NOTE: If I didn't already have a deadbolt and had to drill two entirely new holes in the door for a new deadbolt, I wouldn't have felt comfortable doing this myself. Screwing up a door is irreversible and expensive. - It enabled me to set up up to 99 codes for different users. This lets me monitor real-time entry, have a record of entry, and monitor different contractors in my home. This does require Alexa . (Without Alexa you have to be there physically for setup). You can set up different code lengths - The iPhone app is functional and easy to use. You can view, lock/unlock, or manage users remotely - Battery replacement is straightforward from the inside without needing to lock or unlock the door I don't like that: - This is a deadbolt only. It is not integrated with my door handle. To use this lock's functionality you MUST leave the main door lock unlocked and ONLY use this lock. If someone locks the main door lock, well, you won't have any remote functionality - It wasn't possible to rekey this lock so its key was identical to my other Schlage door lock (integrated with the door handle). I have a high-security Schlage lock in my door handle. The keys are different sizes. Not even a locksmith can do it. - You can set the lock to lock automatically after a few minutes or not to lock automatically, but you can't customize the time. I'd like it to lock automatically after 10 minutes, but 5 minutes is the max I can choose - I'd like to be able to export the records on entry (because I'm managing different contractors in my home and using this to verify when they are there and for how long). You can do it manually by scrolling through history, but that's cumbersome - It's not silent, but makes a grinding noise The keypad hasn't yet attracted fingerprints and marks (which would reveal the. most commonly pressed digits), which is a worry for the future. The Apple Home Key integration is seamless, and I love being able to unlock my door with just a tap of my iPhone or Apple Watch. The keyless entry is super convenient, and the sleek matte black finish gives it a modern look that fits perfectly with my home’s style. Installation was pretty straightforward, and I was able to connect it to my home WiFi without any issues. The lock works reliably with Apple HomeKit, and I’ve set up automations to lock the door at night and when I leave the house.
