  • These folks stand behind their products!
We had the Scalewatcher 3 in use for about 18 months and were more than satisfied - it does what they say it does. And we had it installed at a wellhead about 800 feet from the plumbing our cottage - about 750 feet farther than what other products recommend. It cleared out a ton of old scale and the difference in the water was more than noticeable. Unfortunately, during a prolonged absence the processor apparently kicked the bucket. Despite the fact that the Amazon listing indicates a 1 year warranty, I contacted Scalewatcher who explained there is an official 10 year warranty and they would replace the unit. Unfortunately, as we were transporting it from the cottage to home it - and our bags - went missing. Never mind, says Scalewatcher. I had sent them a video loop of all the lights on the unit doing their thing - except for the processor LEDs - and that was sufficient for them to send us a replacement without us having to return the old one - which is now who knows where?!? So ... we are back in business and more than happy we paid a little bit extra for this unit given the wonderful customer service under the circumstances. Can't say enough positive ... ... show more

  • Excellent product - wish I'd bought one earlier
After moving into a home with very hard water, I waited several years to buy a conventional softener system. Because I garden and do not want to "salt" my plants, I bypassed that system for a good six months of the year. For these reasons, there was considerable calcification on my shower stalls and hardware, on my dishwasher, and in my toilets. I had given up on the toilets in my house - and simply resigned myself to the fact that visitors would be horrified by their calcified and unsanitary appearance. About two months ago, I bought and installed a Scalewatcher from Amazon. Here is the run-down on my experience. 1. The shower: The very first morning after the device was installed I noticed that my shower water felt soft even though the conventional system had been on "bypass" for several months. The "softness" from Scalewatcher was about midway between that of my hard water and my conventionally softened water. Within a few weeks, I noticed that the usually dull spout in my shower tub had begun to shine, and the shower head, which was due for a soaking in vinegar, was performing better and had noticeably less calcification on it. After two months, the tub walls no longer have any calcification - and the shower head is better with every passing day. 2. The dishwasher: Over the years, my dishwasher had accumulated noticeable calcification and I was finding it a pretty useless appliance. When the water was not softened, after a full cycle the glasses and silverware emerged with a caked white film on them. To keep the dishwasher marginally useful, I would periodically unclog the holes in the water spray with a toothpick or skewer. Also, I would occasionally clean it by running it for a few minutes with a bottle of vinegar, and then letting that sit for half an hour before continuing the wash cycle. None of this worked very well, and it was a frustrating enough situation that I had taken to doing most dishes by hand. The manual that comes with the Scalewatcher warns that for the first few weeks your dishwasher may actually perform LESS well than before, as previous calcification is released into the water. To give the device a chance to do its work, I persisted in using my dishwasher - and then rewashing glasses and silverware when necessary. I don't know that my dishwasher's performance was actually any worse than before - but there was definitely a period during which the dishwasher continued to leave a film on my dishes. Then, in a few weeks, I noticed that the back of my stainless steel interior had begun to shine. I had forgotten that there was anything shiny inside this appliance! After two months of operation, the dishwasher is beginning to actually complete a load of dishes without the need for me to re-rinse and wipe glasses and silverware. The dishwasher is not yet working as I believe it would with city water - but it is improving gradually from day to day. 3. Toilets. GRADUALLY, the calcification is eroding. At two months, it is not yet gone, but it is noticeably better. I have resisted using a scrub brush or anything for the past two months, just to see what the Scalewatcher would accomplish on its own. Again, there has been a noticeable and welcome improvement, but I can't report that the Scalewatcher has given me shiny and immaculate looking toilet bowls. I know this may be an unreasonable expectation, but I am sufficiently encouraged that I plan to wait for another month or two to see if it happens! The bottom line is that I would highly recommend this device. It is expensive, but the cost of salt adds up over time; lugging salt into the home is unpleasant; salt will kill your plants; and I am certain that conventional softerns have adverse effects on the environment and on septic systems. There are cheaper and more expensive devices out there, but I was motivated to try Scalewatcher for three primary reasons: 1) They have a nearly unconditional guarantee; (2) the few research studies I could find that tested this technology were done on a Scalewatcher; and (3) Scalewatcher appears to have been the originator of this technology for industrial purposes, so I believed they would have had more experience getting it right. I will say that installing the coils can be a bit of a challenge. It is not a technically difficult project, but it requires some patience and dexterity. It will be easier if you have someone available to hand you the twist ties, etc. You may want to ask a friend over who has an understanding of plumbing to help you locate the right spot on your line to place the coils. ... show more

  • I was Skeptical but it really works
I've never had my water tested but know it's low iron and we get a lot of scale build up on our fixtures and around the drains. 1x per year I have to remove and soak shower heads and faucet aerators in CLR to remove the lime scale, and soak, scrape, clean dishwasher nozzles. My family doesn't really care for the taste of soft water and I didn't want to go through the hassle of adding plumbing to have a drinking water line. I installed the Scalewatcher 3 Star without telling my Wife, 10yo son, 11yo daughter that I was doing so, on a horizontal section of 3/4" Wirsbo water pipe on the exit side of my pressure tank before any T's. The directions indicate 20 wire wraps per layer (double wrapped) is required minimum but sais add an additional 20 - 40 wraps if your water usage is high. Family of 4 I consider my water use medium high. I found the center of the wire, decided I needed 14" of wire tale to reach the control unit and wrapped the remaining length of the wire around the pipe as instructed which resulted in aprox 120 wraps for each layer. I fired up the unit, lights worked as expected and walked away. My wife was currently doing laundry. 3 hrs later I washed my hands and immediately recognized the water felt softer. After 8hrs of operation my daughter took a shower, I asked how was your shower, her reply was, "The water felt wetter, I couldn't get my hair rinsed out", I asked what do you mean it felt wetter, water is wet, it doesn't get wetter. She replied, I can't explain it, it just feels wetter. My son chimed in and said "I know, my soap was very foamy and slimy, it didn't rinse off good. I said, humm, when did this start? They both replied just tonight. Then they continued to drill me, "did you do something with the water?" of which I replied "No, didn't do a thing." They both insist something is different. My experience was similar, I would say the water feels in between untreated water and a professionally installed kinetico water softener that my parents and friend own. Water flavor appears to be unchanged, it tasted great before and tastes great after. After 3 days of operation the scale is flaking off the shower head without being wiped and I can progressively see it getting cleaner. The only person that hasn't made any mention of change is my wife, whom is a busy bee, doesn't pay a lot of attention to irrelevant detail and just goes and does all day everyday keeping a house and with her job. Both of my children are critical thinkers, very detail oriented, skeptical and critical like myself. I'm going to wait till the end of the 3 months to see how long it takes for her to comment on the water before I tell her what I've done. Currently I have two children that offered some evidence of change in the feel of the water and my biased recognition and 1 person that hasn't made a comment, but I haven't pried for it either. I was expecting to wait 3 months before I recognized any change but I must say it appears to have immediate results? I'm about as critical and skeptical as they come and was really expecting this thing to be a hoax but so far so good? ... show more
