Frequently asked questions

The two Black Berkey Elements (BB9-2 Filters) in your Big Berkey can filter approximately 6,000 gallons of water before needing replacement. For an average family of four, this typically means replacing the filters every 2 to 3 years, depending on your water consumption and the quality of water being filtered.

Yes, the Big Berkey system can remove fluoride from your water, but you will need to purchase an additional set of PF-2 fluoride filters. These filters attach to the bottom of the Black Berkey Elements and together they efficiently remove fluoride and arsenic from your water.

Absolutely, the Big Berkey is highly effective at filtering well water, removing bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants common in well water sources. It's important to test your well water periodically to know which contaminants are present, as this can affect the lifespan of your filters.

The Big Berkey operates using a gravity-fed system. Water is poured into the upper chamber, where it gradually filters down through the Black Berkey Elements into the lower chamber, ready for use. This design eliminates the need for electricity, making the Big Berkey ideal for use in any situation, including emergencies or off-grid living.

  • Genuinely pleased
* Great for 7 months. * IMPORTANT: Prime filters (5 min water) for good flow. * Storage (was out of town) - Clean reservoir, let filters dry. Upon return, lazy didn't re-prime filters so REALLY slowed flow after storage. * Drank tap water because Berkey was so slow. Realized how BAD it tastes (had never notice before). * Re-priming fixed slow processing. * 2.5-gallon fills in ~30 minutes. * VERY pleased with performance. * Will track water use for 6,000-gallon filter life. * Amazon stand makes dispensing easier. * Expensive upfront cost BUT well worth it due to taste, convenience, low long ... show more

  • Makes the best water and ice!
This is the second one of these we have ordered. My husband ordered the first one over my objections to the price, but as soon as I put this water into my countertop ice maker, I was 100% sold on the quality and value. Because this filters out all the junk, the ice is very soft and chewable, and I love it. I also can really tell a difference between the filtered water and ice that come out of our refrigerator and this water/ice. This is soooo much better. So I bought one for my mother as well. Easy to use, easy to clean, and great water. ... show more

  • Great investment
My husband and I decided to purchase a water filter after the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment. We didn't want to go with the typical, mainstream brita water filter or the one that connects to a faucet. We have had those before and the filter has to be changed frequently. We liked that the Berkey filters out forever chemicals, specifically the chemicals spilled during the derailment. It also filters out over 200 contaminants, chemicals and bacteria. Setup was fairly easy, however priming the elements was challenging due to the adapter that fit onto our faucet which was a struggle. The life span of the filters is amazing, as they only need to be changed every 11,000 gallons. Although the filters are pricey, around $170ish for 2, they are worth it in the long run. Using the filter is easy. Once set up, just pour water in the top, put the lid back on and you're good to go. Quality of the materials is unmatched. We purchased a stand off Amazon that elevates the element, which you definitely need. Hoping to get the stainless steel spigot soon to replace the plastic one that came with the product. Lastly, I have to say the water tastes AMAZING. Like water should taste. It rivals the taste of Fiji, our preferred bottled water. Our family initially made fun of us for spending so much money on a water filter, but once they tasted it they plan on purchasing one. I was never a big water drinker before, but now I find myself drinking lots of it. We fill up multiple containers of it whenever we leave the house. Great product, give it a try! ... show more

  • Produces water fast and efficiently!
We like our Big Berkey. It makes water fast and easy. We had a leased reverse osmosis system for over 30 years. The water tasted better with RO if I have to be honest. And we are using 4 black filters in the Berkey, and are on a municipal water source. The other thing I have noticed is the mineral deposit/build up in our teapot and dogs water bowls, since deploying the Berkey. This is all okay with us, as the upside is, unlike the RO, this is on the countertop. The RO 3 times leaked under our kitchen cabinet, ruining the cabinet. We just remodeled our kitchen, with custom cabinets, and we decided no more leaks from a RO system. The trade off for more minerals, not as good tasting water, is the zero potential for leaking. We are not complaining about the Berkey..just giving our honest opinion. In the event of a disaster, we hope the claims that it will filter out bad stuff is true. We have well water here on our property that has never been tested and we use for horses water and gardening. It would be our fall back if the municipal water was shutoff or cut off in a disaster, and the Berkey would be our filtration for drinking.... The Berkey is easy to fill, and doesn’t waste water to make water(which a RO does). We purchased 2 extra black filters, so it produces water quickly. We also got the sight glass and a black plant stand. I placed this next to my sink. When I purposely overfill, it just drips into the sink, so no mess on the countertop! I would recommend the Big Berkey, I don’t know of any other system that can deliver clean water so efficiently and cost effective. It also is beautiful to look at! ... show more

  • Best in so many ways. Actually removes fluoride, for those choosing to do so.
Wow. I recommend the Berkey water filters wholeheartedly. I live in a city known for quality tap water, but still, the chlorine taste bugs me, and, the topic of trace pharmaceuticals in our American water supplies is getting more attention. The popular home tap & pitcher style filters work ok, but require continual purchase of replacement filters. The Berkey filters just need a quick cleaning with a brush on occasion, and last for years (if not indefinitely). Another popular choice, reverse osmosis, removes all the bad stuff BUT also all the good, necessary minerals- not only from the water, but once one has ingested the water, it continues to leach minerals from ones body. Also reverse osmosis requires either a costly & complicated home installation, or, continual purchasing pre bottled. Berkey filters remove the unwanted BUT leave the necessary minerals for health. Most important to me, Berkey sells fluoride filters which are easily attached. Removing fluoride from drinking water is a controversial choice, but one important to many who do the research. I had not found any home water systems that remove fluoride quickly and cheaply until Berkey. The fluoride filters do need replacing, but for my use, it’s been only about 1x a year. The Berkey is easy to assemble, to use, and to clean, and the water filtered from this device tastes amazing. ... show more
