Frequently asked questions

The two Black Berkey Elements (BB9-2 Filters) in your Big Berkey can filter approximately 6,000 gallons of water before needing replacement. For an average family of four, this typically means replacing the filters every 2 to 3 years, depending on your water consumption and the quality of water being filtered.

Yes, the Big Berkey system can remove fluoride from your water, but you will need to purchase an additional set of PF-2 fluoride filters. These filters attach to the bottom of the Black Berkey Elements and together they efficiently remove fluoride and arsenic from your water.

Absolutely, the Big Berkey is highly effective at filtering well water, removing bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants common in well water sources. It's important to test your well water periodically to know which contaminants are present, as this can affect the lifespan of your filters.

The Big Berkey operates using a gravity-fed system. Water is poured into the upper chamber, where it gradually filters down through the Black Berkey Elements into the lower chamber, ready for use. This design eliminates the need for electricity, making the Big Berkey ideal for use in any situation, including emergencies or off-grid living.

  • Great investment
My husband and I decided to purchase a water filter after the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment. We didn't want to go with the typical, mainstream brita water filter or the one that connects to a faucet. We have had those before and the filter has to be changed frequently. We liked that the Berkey filters out forever chemicals, specifically the chemicals spilled during the derailment. It also filters out over 200 contaminants, chemicals and bacteria. Setup was fairly easy, however priming the elements was challenging due to the adapter that fit onto our faucet which was a struggle. The life span of the filters is amazing, as they only need to be changed every 11,000 gallons. Although the filters are pricey, around $170ish for 2, they are worth it in the long run. Using the filter is easy. Once set up, just pour water in the top, put the lid back on and you're good to go. Quality of the materials is unmatched. We purchased a stand off Amazon that elevates the element, which you definitely need. Hoping to get the stainless steel spigot soon to replace the plastic one that came with the product. Lastly, I have to say the water tastes AMAZING. Like water should taste. It rivals the taste of Fiji, our preferred bottled water. Our family initially made fun of us for spending so much money on a water filter, but once they tasted it they plan on purchasing one. I was never a big water drinker before, but now I find myself drinking lots of it. We fill up multiple containers of it whenever we leave the house. Great product, give it a try! ... show more

  • Tastes Better
It seems that the gravity filter works as far as taste and removing impurities in the water.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!!!
The water you will drink from the Berkey WILL taste SO MUCH BETTER than any other filter and especially tap, I guarantee it! If silk had a flavor it would taste like this water. Everyone (including the kids) in my house is drinking more water because itโ€™s so good! It is pricey BUT totally worth it IMO. It filters quickly even with only two of the filters installed so you donโ€™t have to sit around and wait forever for the water to be available. We have 4 people in our household and itโ€™s the perfect size for us. We use it for drinking water and cooking. I was honestly worried that it would look big and bulky on the counter and make everything feel a little cluttered but itโ€™s a lot more sleek than I had pictured and rather like it! The second picture has a 40 ounce tumbler for size reference. Itโ€™s very sturdy and the filters are very clearly excellent quality. The quality of the city water where we live is awful, smells like pool water and tastes like it too. I HATED that my kids were drinking it every day so I splurged on this for the sake of their health and I am SO HAPPY I DID!! ... show more

  • Love my Berkey!
Super nice and high quality! Never tarnishes. The water tastes clean and pure. Really easy setup. The size is a bit obnoxious. It would be better if it could fit under kitchen cabinets. Otherwise worth the money and security of drinking filtered water!

  • Make sure not to over fill.
I love my filter system from Berkey. I suggest that you buy one. But remember to Not over fill. Just make sure that before you start by filling the bottom first and get yourself a container that holds the same amount that fills the bottom and always use that to refill the top as you are using the filter on a daily basis. And it will not leak. But if there is water in the bottom that has filtered and you fill the top it will leak. ... show more

  • Solid Function, Improve Design
I'm a college student living off campus who drinks alot of water and shares this with 3 other roommates. My family always valued clean water, so I wanted clean water when I moved out. I decided to get this filter because uses a carbon filter which is suppose to get rid of the things that Brita filters can't. When I got this filter, I compared it to my four stage at home filter, and the type of same carbon block filtration is used, expect for this one is portable and requires no installation (as in connecting pipes). The top holds unfiltered water and the only way for the water to get to the bottom is to go through the carbon blocks which catches the organic chemicals and metals that you don't really taste but I didn't want to be drinking too many things besides water in my water. Compared to my four stage filter that my parents have, this one stage filter has the most important filter (carbon) and the taste is fine. The down fall is that this product seems like it was launched by a start-up company which it probably is. The installation is simple but for the first few days water was slowly dripping out of the dispenser until I really tightened it up. The dispenser is not low enough so the water does not come out after a certain level (but that's understandable since it's difficult to create a sealed dispenser at the bottom edge). This doesn't mean it's robust. The product is made in a simple and durable way, but it doesn't have the feel of a product that's been successful on the market for a while. ... show more
