  • This Bones 2 rack is very nice - especially for the price This Bones 2 rack is very nice - especially for the price
Style: Bones Trunk Size: 2 Bike Carrier
I purchased this to carry road bikes. This is a very high quality product that is worth the price. For practice I just mounted this rack on my 2013 Hyundai Genesis and then on my Cadillac CTS 4. Neither of these vehicles are allowed to get a scratch. That was the main requirement. The rack definitely passes the no-scratch test for the three pads that touch your trunk and bumper. You could probably drive a few hundred miles without any abrasion under the three main pads. I will probably put a decent coat of wax under the pads anyway. The straps are a very sturdy design. There is plenty of extra strap. They are easy to latch down and loosen. I think they will survive a long trip if they are strapped according to the instructions. The buckles are metal, which is a good idea. The rungs that hold the bike are well designed. They are easy to use once you get used to how they work. The anti-sway rung is a very nice touch. Many other racks make you deal with keeping the bike from swaying. I want to share a mistake that I made during my first installation that you should try to avoid. On my first install, I put the top pad as far back on the trunk lid as I could. It was near where the trunk lid meets the back window of the car. This configuration allows the inner bike's inner pedal to strike the back trunk lid, and also allows the strap buckles to strike the surface of the lid. The solution is to move the top pad toward the back of the car a few inches (away from the back window). Just rotate the top spar downward until the spars that hold the bike are further from the car. It is that simple. The first time you install this rack, it might take you 20 minutes. The second time you install it will take 5 minutes. Once you figure it out, the rack is very easy to install. Taking it off the trunk takes a minute or two. As is probably true for most racks, it is our responsibility to keep the front wheel from turning and flopping in the wind. I would love it if racks had some way we could lock the front wheel down. It would be a nice touch if these racks came with the Saris straps to take care of that (they have them). For now, I am going to use a bungee cord to keep the front wheel still. ... show more

  • Excellent Bike Rack and Customer Service
Style: Bones Trunk Size: 2 Bike Carrier
I bought the bones two bike trunk rack for my 2025 Caddy CT4. Fit like a glove, solid on the trunk, good quality plastic, quality straps, and never worry about my bike falling off. Had a problem with one strap not wanting to let go. Contacted customer service and within a week I had a new arm delivered. The strap cannot be changed out because is is sealed at the factory. Excellent customer service. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • WOW, WHAT A GREAT RACK!!!
Style: Bones Trunk Size: 2 Bike Carrier
I like this rack a lot. I have it mounted on my 2012 Subaru Legacy and give it very high marks all around. The instructions are almost useless, as there are only diagrams with no text. It is fairly easy to figure out though. The straps would not tighten properly until I adjusted the upper arm relative to the 2 lower arms at a smaller angle, and then everything just fell right into place. What makes this rack different from many of the other trunk type racks is that the 2 support legs rest squarely on the top surface of the bumper. The upper arm stabilizes it, and the straps lock it all down. Other racks have the bikes hanging on cantilevered arms that are then trussed back to the vertical portion of the trunk lid; a bad design by comparison as there is no vertical support, and a lot of stress on the straps holding the rack to the front edge of the trunk lid. I bought a 2 bike unit and have only used it to carry 1 bike. The bike drops onto 2 mounting saddles with very tight fitting straps that go around the top tube on your bike. There is also a strap that goes around the seat tube securing the bike from swinging forward and back. All I add in addition to that is a bungee to stabilize the front wheel. The bike sits very securely on the rack and it is located a good 8-10 inches away from the car. My only concern is the metal clips at the ends of the straps that hold the rack to the car. They have a thin coating on them that will likely wear out over time. I will find a rubber dip or maybe that rubber sealant spray to better coat them and protect my car's paint. It was a little tricky getting it all set up, and the clips could use a bit more rubber protection, but overall it is a solid rack and very easy to mount and dismount bikes. ... show more

  • Easy to install; easy to use; but ...
Style: Bones Trunk Size: 2 Bike Carrier
This bike rack was relatively easy to put together. It feels fairly sturdy, although with only one base arm on the top of the trunk (tripod stability), I did notice with my first use that the rack did shift slightly when driving extensive distances. For some reason, the clasp part of the anchor straps on one side of the rack were practically inside the frame; and on the other side, they were about 4"-6" away from the frame, which made it much easier to adjust the straps on one side of the rack versus the other. Main complaint about this rack: as it is designed to have the lower arms sit on the bumper, not the back wall of the trunk lid, it makes it a challenge to open the trunk, because you must line everything up just-so in order to close the trunk. I used it for long-distance bike hauling, which meant when I wanted to get something out of the trunk, I had to readjust the rack every time I needed to open the trunk, making sure the feet lined up so they would not get in the way of closing the trunk, and that all the straps were still in place. As I was on the road for four days, and did not want to leave my bike unattended on my car overnight (despite security strap into trunk), I had to open my trunk each night to put the security strap anchor back inside the trunk, so this was not something to not fret about. (Also, historically, I have simply left my bike rack on my car for long periods of time, and this trunk open/close issue means I'll only keep the rack on the car when I actually need it.) On this rack, as with previous bike racks I've owned, I do wish there was a bit of rubber on the clasps to help make the straps feel more secure once everything is tightened up. Minor complaint. Ease of use once assembled/in place: feel like it is pretty easy to get bikes onto this rack. Second bike was a little bit of a challenge to get it on, but I think that was more due to how the frames of the two bikes aligned more than a flaw of the rack design. I do wish the strap on the lower part of the rack, meant to secure the vertical bar of the bike frame, was perhaps two inches longer. There are holes at the end of the straps that you can loop a lock through (or a thin cable wire lock). They're more theft-deterrent than theft-preventative, as they're plastic, so a determined bike thief could cut through them, I think. Overall, compared to my previous rack, I like this one quite a bit. Feels sturdy. Straps drive me a bit nuts, but honestly, I have yet to have a bike rack where the straps aren't aggravating in one form or another. Easy to remove rack from car. ... show more

  • This Bike Rack Outclassed My Long Lasting Previous Rack In EVERY Way.
Style: Bones Trunk Size: 3 Bike Carrier
I have been researching many different bike racks to replace my old Yakima bike rack. I first saw the Saris Bones rack on my neighbors car. I was drawn by the easiness of mounting/unmounting the straps. On Yakima bike racks, the bikes are held on by these rubber bike straps which took up a lot of force and strength to strap in. This rack uses these plastic straps that are unsecured by holding it down and pulling out the strap. This might not seem like much but when you are doing this on a constant basis with multiple bikes you will appreciate the ease of use (at least compared to what I was using). The plastic straps themselves are very secure and do a great job of holding the bikes in place. I took three bikes on a 300+ mile trip and through bumps, hard turns, and highways the rack held up fine with no noticeable looseness. With three adult road bikes they each still have enough space between them to not overlap. The rack itself is installed the same way most trunk racks are mounted on the car with nylon straps that go around the trunk. Another feature that may go unnoticed is the tube in the middle of the bike rack allows you to stuff the excess straps in for a cleaner and more organized mount. This will prevent the constant flapping of the straps that may distract you or hit the bikes during trips. The mount arms can be adjusted and mount into place using a thumbwheel. I don't usually keep the rack on my car unless I need to but from what I have seen the metal at the end of the nylon straps haven't done any noticeable damage to my paint or trunk. Overall, the bike rack is the best bike rack I have ever used (or seen) and I have converted many people to this bike rack just by people watching me use it. If you don't mind the pricier tag I would highly recommend. ... show more

  • Saris Bones 3-Bike Trunk Rack - Perfect for my needs
Style: Bones Trunk Size: 3 Bike Carrier
So I bought this rack a few months ago. After doing plenty of research on the various rack options for my Jetta Sportwagen,(roof racks, hitch racks, trunk racks) I ended up with the Saris. I went with the 3 bike as opposed to the 2-bike for no reason whatsoever, except I knew there might be a day where putting 3 bikes on would be nice. It has 2 upper and 2 lower bracing points, as opposed to 2 lower and only 1 upper joint for the 2-bike setup. So far, I have only used this for my road bikes. Multiple trips (~30 miles or so) with just one road bike. It has worked flawlessly. Took me about 15 minutes to initially set it up on my wagon. The great thing about the Saris is the flexibility of the design. I have it mounted so that I can still open up the hatch when it is attached. That is a big plus for me, as I haul stuff around quite a bit and need access to my cargo area. This past weekend I put the Saris to the test. 3 road bikes, 600 miles of high speed (75+ mph) highway driving, bad roads, and gusting winds. Putting the Bones on the car once it is adjusted correctly is a breeze. 3-5 minutes at most. I tie a few of the longer straps together in a bow to keep them from whipping around during the drive. Three bikes was no problem for the Saris. With a bike on the last mount (farthest from the bracing) I did notice the arms flex slightly in the wind with the weight of the bikes. This is going to happen with any plastic material like the arms are constructed with. But it was slight enough that I never worried about my expensive frames crashing to the road into a billion pieces. So many parts would have to fail simultaneously for anything to ever happen to the rack. I would recommend this rack to anyone who needs a small, lightweight, and removable bike rack. The price is a little higher than other racks, but it is worlds better. You get what you pay for. ... show more

  • MAJOR DISASTER WITH THIS RACK - THE PLASTIC TORE APART AND BIKE HIT THE ROAD
Style: Bones Trunk Size: 2 Bike Carrier
Two weeks after writing the below review, I was driving with my bike on the Saris Bones rack. I went over a bump at under 20 mph and I saw the bike jump up and then fall down. I pulled over to inspect what had happened. One of the three plastic straps had popped off of the plastic groove into which it had been welded. Unfortunately, my bike wheel then hit the road and is damaged. I am calling Saris tomorrow since this is supposed to have a "lifetime guarantee." I was really shaken by this event and will probably not want a replacement but my money back and price to repair bike and I'll buy something more substantial. BTW, all straps and buckles to the car were still tightly in position so it was not the fault of the straps or buckles but of the plastic that holds the plastic that goes around the bike frame. I WROTE THIS 2 WEEKS AGO: I've now had this for 3 months and have a sense of its pros and cons. Pros: basic & simple; light weight; good price; sturdy construction; easy assembly only if you watch a video of it; no damage to car from it; holds bike securely though I still add a long strap to keep front wheel and frame stable to the carrier. Cons: cannot lift hatchback with rack in place with or without the bike on it - to do this you really need a hitch-type carrier; neither the carrier nor the carrier with the bike on it can be locked in place - fortunately I live in an area where theft is rare. ... show more
