I've had a lot of these garbage cans over the years and they all seem to have one problem - it's hard to get the full garbage bags out. The cans are sealed so that there is suction preventing you from getting the bag out. Not this one, it works great. The last trash can I had was an automatic opener and it worked ok, but eventually fell apart. I wanted something simple and there were several negative reviews about this one. They seemed to mostly be related to the lock feature, which seemed odd to me. The can looked good and the price was right, so I got one. It does have a couple of quirks, and the lock feature seems odd, but I really don't use the lock feature so it doesn't matter to me. I can open the whole lid, and it stays put while I take out the garbage bag (very easily I might add), and then stays open while I put in the replacement. I don't use the lock feature and don't know what it is really for, so if that's keeping you from getting this then just go ahead and get it. It is a bit difficult to put in the garbage bags as they have to stretch to fit over the can but I haven't torn one yet and it fits so well that you don't see parts of the bag hanging over the edge. One thing mentioned by several reviewers is that the lid doesn't always close. I found that as well, but then looked at the instructions and it said to push the lid down the first time. Once I did that, there was no problem with it closing, so I guess it does pay to actually read the directions. Overall, I'm as happy as I can be about a trash can. It's not annoying, and I can take out the bags easily and it looks ok in the kitchen. You can't really ask much more of a plastic trash can.

I feel like a crazy person, writing a review for a trash can. Not only did I spend 2 hours of my precious weekend downtime researching and selecting a can, I was EXCITED when it arrived. Cue the happy music and dancing bears! I really got this because it featured a locking lid. My darling 4 legged fur baby likes to go dumpster diving on occasion and anything to deter her antics is a must. So the can arrives, assembly (just attaching the lid) was easy. Putting in a bag was more difficult, but let me tell you, that sucker isn't going to slide, sending mashed potatoes in a smeary streak down the inside of your can. It's glorious. I have to say, the lid does lock. Which is great. But the lid is recessed inside the frame, making the locking lid unnecessary for me because there is no real edge to grab. And the frame is too heavy for my dog to pry open with her snoot. All in all, better than I expected!

Several reviewers have commented that the lid sticks open after using the foot pedal. I decided to take a chance, but knew that would be a PITA. Sure enough upon receipt mine stuck open at first, but after a day or two and working it up and down repeatedly it wore in or something. It closes fine, smooth as silk. If you want a no frills, functional trash can for your kitchen, this is your baby. If the lid sticks when you get it, futz with it a little bit and it will correct itself. Unlike a metal one it will not dent or rust and it can be rinsed off with a hose once in a while.

Typically, RubberMaid products have quality features and good design - that is not the case with this Premier Series lll step on trash can. According to the product description it is a 12.4 gallon trash can with “an integrated liner lock to hold the trash bag in place.” What it doesn’t tell you is that 13 gallon tall kitchen trash bag are too small to fit on the square opening at the top of the can. It never occurred to me that standard 13 gallon trash bags wouldn’t fit this can. Unfortunately I have a large box of 13 gallon, flex strength trash bags so I have tried to make it work. I have to cut the bag, tape it to add inches to be able to fit the opening and then tape it in place on the can so it doesn’t fall into the can. Then I can cover it all up with the “integrated liner lock”. I have to just shake my head at the steps I have taken to make this trash can function. It is ridiculous that it is so poorly designed that standard 13 gallon tall kitchen trash bags do not fit. So save yourself the trouble and frustration - do not buy the RubberMaid Premier kitchen trash cans.

I originally purchased just one of the Rubbermaid Series IV to replace a Simple Human trash can in the kitchen where the color had worn off the plastic lid lock. Also, the lid would not stay in the open position when a piece of trash was tossed in. However, I liked it enough to purchase a second one for an area where the trash can was visible and used a lot. The first Rubbermaid trash can came undamaged. The second one ordered later has a little area on the top edge of the lid that was worn off (damage). That damage was minor. Edited to add that I realized later the second trash can did not have the red lid lock piece either. I contacted Rubbermaid to get just that part, but they were unable to send it. I ended up returning the second can. I needed to lock the lid at times to keep kids/pets out and or keep it open for cleaning. Why I like the Rubbermaid brand better. • Appearance o Looks nicer. The Rubbermaid has a stainless steel and plastic finish. Hopefully, the color will not wear off. • Lid o Soft close feature. o Lid stays in the open or closed position. I did not find the latch difficult to operate. It is on the back of the can instead of on the lid. • Liner Concealer o The stainless-steel trim covers the trash can liner. I use Hefty Ultra Strong with triple layer technology 13-gallon liners. There is no plastic inner liner. I did put a weight at the bottom of the trash can. If the can falls over, it is possible the stainless-steel trim could become damaged. The instructions are on top of the lid engraved in plastic. I’d recommend Rubbermaid include a color paper card. People with low vision will have difficulty seeing this. Overall, this trash can has nice features and appearance for the price. I've had the first trash can for two months now. It is in my kitchen. Looks great, and that one works well :-)
